Maintenance for the week of March 25:
• [COMPLETE] ESO Store and Account System for maintenance – March 28, 9:00AM EDT (13:00 UTC) - 12:00PM EDT (16:00 UTC)

Unknown error has occurred (After logging in and long loading times)

  • keybladekyle
The game was working fine for me and my friends right up until today, we all got kicked off with the unknown error, one after another.
Now none of us can log back in, it just crashes either straight away or after loading for a while.

I can sometimes get to the character screen, and one time the game did load with bad lagging so if you are desperate just keep trying to log in, over and over again and it sometimes works.

What solved it for me was actually an advice from ZOS:

"Looking at the tracert that you sent in we determined that it looks like the information is going through a bad route to get back to you and thus could be why you are getting the kickouts and lag spikes. To attempt to fix this please follow these steps to flush your DNS:

    Windows 7:

    Click on the Start button
Type cmd in the Start Menu
Right-click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator
Type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter
If it was successful, you will see the message "Windows IP configuration successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache."
Power cycle the router to clear the cache so that it doesn't store the bad route
    "

I have this. I was able to play when I first installed, but now when I try to log back in it loads for over half an hour, then when I finally get to my character, it starts to load, then tells me there is an error and I get taken back to login again. So I have spent £50 just to login repeatedly and watching loading screens. Unacceptable. I have very fast internet, I am the only user and am at my own home. This should NOT be happening. I am appalled.

I dont think anything on my PC is responsible that i'm no longer part of any guild (my own is gone too). And i get the "unknown error" sometimes too. Didnt happen before patch.

    I'm an It-specialist myself.

I was hoping this patch would fix this issue but it seems it only made it worse lol

I find this error occurs when the data is not coming from the server, peak times this error triggers for me often...I don't have a fast connection but it works fine during the day and most of the time really, but it does happen that when my characters are in heavily populated areas and I get to the loading screen it triggers this error, since most my characters if not all are in major cities I have the issue often, personally I feel its an issue on the server side, that data doesnt come through in a timely fashion and the connection times out, i.e. unknown error occurred. Mine of course happening now with the server restart after the second patch was released...my connection runs stable and many games i can download albeit throttled down but still some but ESO...nope, it needs all the bandwidth from me to work so I clear all my network activities when playing this...its still poor design im sure or just not streamlined effectively and I hope it gets fixed soon, this is my finding anyway, most of what I have seen on this error coincides with data not getting through from the server.

i never had this issue before, after this update i started to get it .... but my girlfriends computer is fine playing it and never has a issue!

After the server maintenance was done, i tried logging in only to find that i can't log in anymore. That *** Unknown error keeps popping up.

I'm going to end up not playing this game if this continues. I didn't pay for this to happen.

That "fix" didn't work for me.

Still can't get in the game without a confused error that needs a purpose.
  • rainbowsparky
Yup, if anything, the flushdns "fix" just cut down on the loadtime before the error occurs.

This did not fix the issue for me.

With so many people having this error, specially people who aren't reporting the error, is this all on our end? How many of you are on revolving IPs? (dynamic)

I have been receiving this error since I originally had my 5 days of early access. Because of this error, I was unable to create my characters with my planned names (one of the reasons for even buying the early access) and when I finally went home to test it out, my friends were basically in the mid-20s.

I talked to my IT department at my college, as well, and they basically told me that there is "no issue on the college's IT side" and to pretty much suck it up. I tried the fixes mentioned on this post along with several others on Reddit and such, as well. None have worked so far... I am very disappointed in this issue, and I am not too thrilled that I do not see any developer replies to this topic...

I'm on a dynamic IP, but I was able to connect before. IT let ESO use the ports it needed and everything was fine during Beta. Then at launch it stopped working.

So whatever the problem is for me, it's caused by something ZOS changed between beta and launch.

Sooo.... has anyone found a solution yet? I have been avidly trying to fix this crap. :(

No solution here... :'( I haven't had an email response from tech support in over a week either.

I'm having this god damn problem. Haven owned the game for more than a day and cant get past level 5 because i get kicked out with unknown error every 5-10 minutes.

I own over a hundred games across battlenet, steam, stand alones, and orgin. I've never experienced a problem as frequent as this to the point where it is unplayable. How the heck do i fix it? Is there a way to get our money back?

I have this problem on my home network, but I can play just fine on the same laptop at my girlfriends house (using wifi for both, running windows 8.1, i7, 16gb ram, nvidia755m(x2)). (*edit: re-read the thread, and my issue is a bit different. I can log in to my toon, but all I can do is walk around and jump. Can't interact with npc's, other players just stand there in place, my summoned pet never shows up, or if it does, just stands in one place, cannot interact with environment i.e. doors, way-shrine, etc. I think I read too many threads and got confused by which "unknown error" thread I was posting in. I can /quit, but if I try to log out I get a never-ending loading screen, followed by the boot and error message.)

After reading this thread , I designated an IP address for my computer on my home network using these steps: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/19249/how-to-assign-a-static-ip-address-in-xp-vista-or-windows-7/

After I did that, I was able to play without a hitch for about two hours. That was until I grouped up for the fungal dungeon. After we wiped a few times I got the "unknown error" report and crashed. Tried re-logging and it was back to the same lag issues.

I'll be at my girl's place tomorrow, so I'll check to see if 1) I have the same lag issues at her place, and 2) what differences (if any) are there between her network settings and mine.

I'm thinking in my case its the router because its the same pc, same ISP, both using wireless. Only difference is the modem/router combination and the network settings.

I still have this problem since the early access launch, ZOS email support hasn't given me any real advice it seems they just have the reply on copy paste with things that aren't even related. I clearly told them it was a problem with the connection to the server and some *** actually said "turn down your graphics settings to low and see if it works", as if my 780 Ti would have a problem handling the mediocre graphics of ESO, lol.

    Hey folks,

We are finding many of you experiencing the "Unknown error" could be because of packet loss somewhere along the way from your machine to our servers. There are many things that can contribute to packets being lost, which can vary from individual to individual.

For anyone getting the error, please run the game consultant to generate a report to post here in this thread.
    • Open the ESO Launcher.
    • Click on the Gear icon in the upper-right hand corner.
    • Click the About tab.
    • Click the Game Consultant button.
    • Click Run Test to create the data log.

Note: this function aggregates a MSinfo, a DxDiag report, pathping, and traceroute
    • A new window should open telling you the report is saved. Click the OK button.
    • The report saves itself in your My Documents folder as a text file called Report.txt.
    • Post the Report.txt file in this thread.

We also suggest going to http://www.pingtest.net and running a test to see if you are losing any packets.

In addition, there are a few troubleshooting steps you may want to try that could help out with stopping the "Unknown error" that some users have had success with.

First, try removing or disabling any add-ons you are using in game. It's possible some add-ons may be contributing to getting the "unknown error."

Second, you could be experiencing signal interference if you're using a wi-fi connection. In your router settings, try changing the wi-fi broadcast signal to 1, 6, or 11 and test out if that helps or not. If possible, try a direct wired connection as well.

Third, make sure any services on your machine that could use bandwidth are turned off while playing the game. Such things as download software or communication software could contribute to packet loss as a connection gets overwhelmed while the game is running.

I've been having these issues pretty frequently and i've tried a number of the suggestions people have suggested on various posts. No fix for me yet (sometimes it will manage to log in but more often than not it doesn't) Have barely been able to get in at all this week due to these errors, better get sorted soon i'm sure you've lost a big chunk of your playerbase already :(

I've tried the suggestions that ZOS_BillE mentioned above, along with several others from tech support and other posters. I don't use wi-fi, I don't use addons because I've had this issue since beta and I don't want to have any additional issues. I'm not using any services that would cause bandwidth issues. What I don't understand is why I can play any other game and I don't constantly get kicked out of the game like I do with ESO.

Ok, this thread got way too quiet. Did everyone's issue get fixed but me? ;) There has been a request for the game consultant file to be attached. Maybe if enough people do this, they can figure out the issue.

I think most of the people installed WTFast or Battleping which solved the problem for many players.

BUT I think almost all only have the 30days trial version. So Zenimax has approximately 20 days left to fix this issue, before the trial days end for the first players.

In my case, i tried for about 2 weeks to solve the unknown error on my own. I wrote ingame tickets, mailed to the customer support, searched the depths of the internet, read the forum every day... nothing. -.-

Personaly I had no Feedback from the customer-support except 2 Robo-answers. Yeah they postet a few times in the forum but all their suggestions did not work.

So I installed WTFast two days ago and all my problems are gone. So I have 28 days of the trial left :)

But my IT-Skills are only basic so maybe someone can explain to me why I have packetloss with my pc but with my old macbookpro none?
Same room. same cable, same socket. and also tested with w-lan again no loss
  • verna.harrisonub17_ESO
Thank you for responding Albarich. I'm not familiar with WTFast or Battleping (never needed it), so I'll give it a try. I'm really enjoying the game when I can stay in it for 30 min or so. lol Kinda hard to make any progress with constant crashing.

@Albarich thanks for the info, will try it, I have been having the issue for a while now and im glad its not my internet speed or latency, considering the good ping many of you have and still have this error, will try it and see, but even if it works...this is a big fail imo from Zenimax
