I thought Elsweyr was included with ESO Plus?

Hi, guys, new ESO player here. Before downloading and installing ESO, I looked into the ESO Plus membership and could have sworn I read that all DLC would be available to me. However, upon logging into the game I am met with the option to upgrade to Elsweyr, as I apparently do not have said expansion.

Did I misread something about the membership?

Elsweyr is not a DLC but a Chapter, an expansion. Chapters become a DLC after a while like Morrowind and Summerset.

DLC is included, but the 'Chapters' such as Elsweyr, Summerset, etc are separate and have to be bought unfortunately. It probably could do with being a little clearer. You're certainly not the first to mix them up. :)

Assuming the Chapter Elsweyr follows the same example of Morrowind and Summerset, it will become a DLC sometime next year when ESO releases the 2020 Chapter.

Yes, ESO started using the term 'DLC' in a more specific sense after they came up with the idea to rename some of their content updates 'Chapters' and charge everybody for them.

Previously, all 'Downloadable Content' (i.e. MMO content updates) were free with the subscription, but they came up with the idea to rename their larger DLCs into 'Chapters' (basically a glorified DLC with aspirations to be considered an expansion despite them having barely more content than other DLCs and dramatically less content than other MMO 'expansions').

Now with their current content release schedule, every year they release 1 larger DLC called a Chapter (which everybody has to buy), and 1 smaller zone DLC and 2 dungeon DLCs (which are included in ESO+). When the next year's Chapter is released, the previous year's Chapter is downgraded to the rank of DLC and it will become free for subs.

Thank you for answering so swiftly and clearing that up for me. :) I have one more question, though. If I buy the Elsweyr chapter, are all previous chapters included or must I buy all chapters individually?

I come from World of Warcraft, wherein I believe purchasing the latest expansion also unlocks all previous ones. I'm not sure if it works like that here, too.

Elsweyr is an expansion (chapter). Unfortunately current chapters aren't included with ESO+. It will be next year though after a new chapter comes out.

You don't have to buy Elsweyr to get access to Summerset and Morrowind. Those are DLCs now so you can play them if you are a subscriber. There is only one 'Chapter' at any one point (the most current 'big' DLC), and that is Elsweyr now.

Previous Chapters are ranked down to being just a regular 'DLC' when the new Chapter comes out. So Morrowind was a has-to-be-bought-separately Chapter from Summer 2017 to Summer 2018. Then Summerset came out and Morrowind became a regular DLC included with the subscription. Summerset was then the has-to-be-bought-separately Chapter from Summer 2018 to Summer 2019. Then Elsweyr came out and Summerset became a regular DLC. Right now only Elsweyr has to be bought separately, all previous content is classified as a DLC (so you get all old content for free while you're an ESO+ sub or you buy them with Crowns like all other DLCs).

I see, that makes sense. As I have not even begun to level a character, would you recommend I buy the Elsweyr chapter anyway? I just worry I may be missing out on something.

It's DLC. They just called it something other than DLC so it isn't covered by plus. Lol

Play the main game first (all 3 factions), then Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood and Orsinium, then Morrowind, Clockwork City and Summerset, and then Murkmire. By the time you finish all that, the price would have dropped and you can get it cheap. ;)

It's up to you. The game gives you the freedom to experience Elsweyr first over everything else, however when it comes to chronological order there is a LOT of content that comes before it.

Yes, you missed the fineprint where they can call something something else and charge you for naming it something else ...

There is no rush to play Elsweyr right now. The base game + all the free DLCs you get from your sub will keep you occupied for months! The whole world of ESO scales (it's not like other MMOs where all max level players congregate in only the latest zones with all other content being dead), so you're not missing out on anything here!

The only reason to buy Elsweyr now is if you want to play the Necromancer class, as it is currently locked for non-Elsweyr-owners (and I wouldn't recommend the Necro as a class anyway, especially to a new player as it's a bit more clunky). So if you're happy with the other classes then all there is in Elsweyr is a story zone (which chronologically comes after all previous zones so you have plenty of content to get through first) and a trial (which doesn't really drop anything that you need to have - there are plenty of other places to get awesome endgame sets from).

You should probably enjoy the rest of the game before you buy Elsweyr. But if you do buy it, It's generally useful to buy it only during a sale when it's heavily discounted, as it's not worth the full Chapter price. The Elsweyr Upgrade goes for $24 instead of $40 when discounted, which is similar to the big DLC prices in the Crown Store (non-subscribers need to buy Summerset and Morrowind as a DLC that cost 3,500 Crowns - and that amount of Crowns costs around $27).

Just remember that Bethesda likes to change the meaning of names. First they were called Add-ons. Bethesda gave them for free as a thank you for supporting them with Morrowind and 2 expansions.

When Oblivion came out, Bethesda CAN'T thank their fans and customers now and changed Add-ons to DLC. Bethesda said since it's DLC they charge for it.

Now with ESO+ all DLC is free. BUT now Bethesda changes the name DLC to story.

Just know Zenimax/Bethesda are scummy this way since they DO NOT RESPECT their customer and fans because they do everything they can to wring money from people who support them. I am not talking about the developers or the actual people who work on the game, but management. They do some shaddy stuff that is for sure.

Great game, sadly ruined by greed and want to be EA.
Not my quote but I love this saying

"I would pay It for support. But since they choosed we are just numbers and not customers, i dont mind if game and zos goes to oblivion"

If you don't want to start from the last part of the story, don't buy Elsweyr now.
ESO has one frustrating design decision: every chapter forces players to start their journey from that chapter, while all previous content (along with all previous plots and storyline) lays somewhere there. So, it's like killing Illidan in Legion and only then going to the Burning Crusade to see what was happening long before the Legion. (I don't know WoW good enough, so I might have confused something in WoW storylines but I hope you got the point).

    Question for clarity:

Is the Warden class included with ESO+? It's a non-factor to me since I bought Morrowind back in 2017, but I thought I remember seeing where they separated the class from the, now-DLC Morrowind, and you were required to buy the class upgrade with crowns?

Can anyone confirm or correct me on this?

    No it is not.

I had to buy it separately to get access. I started with a sale on Summerset and have been ESO+ since then. I even bought Elsewyer, but I only have the Warden (and Imperial for that matter) on NA since I am not going to pay for it on EU.

You must buy the separate class upgrade with crowns now, assuming you own the Morrowind DLC.

It gets weird with the various packs for buying the base game and what not, so that really depends. I havent looked at all the options to know for sure about Warden.

They're advertising their game a nasty way and it's easy to make the mistake of purchasing the base game and then purchasing the latest chapter which makes you miss out on the Warden class plus Summerset & Morrowind.
Base game is $20, Elsewyr chapter seperately is $40

You're better off buying the Elsewyr Digital Standard Edition which comes with; Summerset & Morrowind, (Also includes warden class) Costs $60, or $36 with the sale now.

Then you can subscribe to ESO+ for $14,99 a month for the rest of the dlc's/previous chapters.
