Container respawn.

So, as you all know, it's absolutely necessary to enter large buildings, loot their cabinets and trunks and such, and then leave and relog to do so again in order to build up your repertoire of provisioning recipes.

Unfortunately, for some unfathomable reason, the ability to do this has been hamstrung on two of my characters. First, it happened in Glenumbra on a DagCov character, then -again- in the starting zone for an EbonPact character.

The basic problem is that, past a certain level or perhaps upon reaching a certain phase, whenever I log out and back in, perhaps.. two, or three of the containers in any given building, maximum, will have respawned. Contrast this with normal where almost every container respawns upon logging in and out. This affects not only that building, but THE ENTIRE ZONE in which it sits. This dooms my ability too gather recipes and ingredients effectively and makes the pursuit of provisioning pointless.

I found -zero- mention of this in any of the patch notes, so I assumed it was a bug, and sent in a report, but I'm interested too know if more experienced players have been having the same issue.

It's not respawn. It's you being instantiated in another instance. One wherein someone had been there before you.

@WhiteQueen has it, every time you log in you get placed in a random 'layer' of the world zone you're in .. that's how the mega-servers deal with hundreds of thousands of players .. and it's just pot luck whether you land in a 'virgin' layer or one that others have been through moments before you arrived.

Actually, I wasn't aware that relogging is required for farming.

You don't really need to farm for provisioning supplies. You find plenty just in normal questing, or sitting around town, or in dungeons...

My level 9 DK has provisioning up to level 26 without ever taking from the same container twice. What you're doing seems like far more work than provisioning is worth.
    Living vicariously through my characters.

    My Girls:
"If you were trapped in your house for, say, a year, how would you pass the time?"

Nephikah the Houseless, dunmer assassin: "I suppose I could use the break. I have a lot of business holdings now that need management."
Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "I think that I would enjoy writing a memoir."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."
Echoes-from-Dragons, argonian who thinks she's a dragon: "All the better to count my hoard!"

(Signature idea shamelessly stolen from Abeille.)

Just cruise every barrel, chest, box, wardrobe, etc you come across. I'm level 17 and have a 26 provisioning and about 20 recipes from level 1 - 15 that I know. I've done that just checking everything like that I encounter inside and outside.

It depends on what you're farming. Nodes and chests disappear after use and will respawn in that area in about 5 to 10 minutes. Mobs and bosses can respawn. Chests and containers can be looted by anyone in the room but seem to have a longer respawn time. It seems as if you don't leave the zone, they never respawn - but I haven't tested this. Logging out and logging in does "reset" the area by placing you in a new layer or instantiation of that area, as noted by WhiteQueen and KerinKor.

However, it is random. No one else can "loot" your containers (nodes and chests, yes, but containers are all specific to players). So no one can get to the chests before you. They're yours. And there is always a certain number of empties.

But, to the OP, I too seem to be noticing some more empties as I get higher in level. Or maybe the did change it. The above is how it has worked during beta, early access, and up to this point in my game.

Playing on a PC, NA Server, since that very first day ...

Good to know that they really are specific to players. Was getting a bit unsure of it, since I hit VR1 and came to Daggerfall, a town FULL of desks, cabinets, trunks and nightstands. Lovely place to hunt recipes and motif's, but to my dissappointment, they were all empty.

But I thought it actually took a certain amount of time for the containers to refresh/respawn loot, after checking them.
