Servers are just terrible.

Honestly it's just so damn bad. To even think they said 2020 would be a performance update is complete laughable at this point.

True. But, there is hope. Not too long ago Jessica posted that there is a fix, and that if it's stable, they will implement it prior to Monday.

So this is good. It is an effort taking place at this time at least as well as acknowledgement of the severity of the problem.

I feel, it's the game engine that is causing the servers to fail. So, the problem will remain like forever. Unless, they overhauled the gameplay by removing fast paced combat to tab-targeting type of gameplay like WoW.

I know it’s fashionable to [snip] on ZOS, and there no denying that performance is terrible right know, but performance has been bad before and ZOS has improved it. 2 years ago or so, every big zerg fight turned into a slide show for EVERYBODY, where skills just wouldn’t fire and all you could do was light attack. ZOS acknowledged the problem then and did things that improved it. They’ve also acknowledged the problems now and have pledged to fix them. If you’re so negative about the future, why play? And if you’re already not playing, why bother coming into the forums just to spread salt?

    Again, the PvP tunnel effect.

Two years ago, there was pretty much zero performance issue in PvE. I never had to deal with sudden FPS drop for no reason in the middle of nowhere, loading times so long that you get returned to the login screen, unlootable dead bodies beause they were so desyncronised you saw them in a place they were not, and so on.

But hey, if you really care to speak about PvP, well... Two years ago, did everyone in Cyrodill crash when the gates of keep did open ? No ? Well then it's gotten worse.

The only problem they need to acknowledge is that their servers are very, very underperforming, but they don't want to spend cash on improving them.

Why did the servers perform so much better in the past?
Why were we able to have a bigger pop cap on servers?
And why could we have pop locked servers, with a bigger pop cap and we had little to no lag?
These are the questions zos should be pondering. If they are or aren't I have no clue.

@Uryel I have experienced 900+ ping in stonefalls just standing around. We have disagreed on other topics, but for your sake and the community, I hope they can fix it and at least save a portion of the player base.

I don’t believe them either. We’ve had so many empty promises over the past year and a half... ESO on console is a joke at the moment. :(

Sigh. It might be time for me to finally say goodbye to MMORPGs. I left LOTRO after eight years due to server performance issues, and I’m on the verge of leaving ESO now after three years for the same problems. If I didn’t have zero interest in Final Fantasy or eastern fantasy RPG artwork, I’d consider playing that game as it seems to be the only MMO on console that works...

I used a pvp example because pvp has always been the canary in the coal mine for ESO performance. You can also look at vet trials as an example, since it's probably the aspect of pve that taxes the game most. My point is that game performance has had its ups and downs over the life of this game. Populations rise and fall, and ZOS adds content and patches bugs, which affects server load and code efficiency. They've made focused improvements to game performance in the past with varying results, and have put out a plan to work on it again. I can't count how many times over the years people have claimed in the forums that "ESO is dead/dying", "ZOS is letting the game die", "ZOS does nothing", etc, when if you actually look at the reality, it's just not the case.

There's no denying that game performance is near or at an all-time low right now, and the random crashing introduced by the last patch is extra frustrating, but maybe all of us could try to get some perspective, and give ZOS a chance to do what they've promised to do, without all the melodramatic doomsaying.

Just read this on another game I play, and got really sad about ESO: https://www.ea.com/games/battlefield/battlefield-5/news/battlefield-v-update-ryan-mcarthur

Imagine, a game company that delays new content releases to fix pre-existing issues so as to not make them any worse... This statement stood out in particular: “Not creating this mode was a tough decision, but vital for us to more quickly reach our bug-crushing and content goals.” Imagine if ZOS operated on the same philosophy!

Console ESO is unplayable in PVP and riddled with issues in PVE, and they just keep trucking along, releasing more new content riddled with more new bugs.

    {snip for brevity}
The only problem they need to acknowledge is that their servers are very, very underperforming, but they don't want to spend cash on improving them.

Bigger hardware will not fix bad code. I used to work at a company that management would just throw bigger hardware at clients when they complained about performance. We did one upgrade to go from a quad CPU machine to an 8-way. The performance issue remained as the bottleneck issue was not in the hardware, but it was bad code/DB Searches. The upgrade proved that to management, and they had to go back and have the programmers actually fix/optimize their code to address the issue.

So in summary, I don't think that its a matter of ZOS adding more/bigger hardware to ESO, but that the software/databases itself is the issue, and throwing money at more hardware will not fix the performance problems.

You are welcome to your opinion on the matter, but I don't agree that money spent on new hardware will fix the performance problems.

Do you play in Cyrodiil? Gaming monitors won’t fix crashes that occur when taking or losing a keep. Gaming monitors won’t fix health desync bugs. Gaming monitors won’t fix necro bash spam.

It's probably unrealistic to think that ZOS will ever delay or cancel *new content* to focus on fixing bugs ...

However, the frustrating thing to me is to see patches like Scalebreaker where a massive amount of work was put into "balancing" basically every single skill in the game, making sweeping changes to sets, which caused a huge shift in "the meta" in all game-modes. Especially when people seemed pretty happy with the state of combat in Elsweyr.

That energy should've been focused on bug fixing, proper testing, and performance updates IMO. So not only do we have to spend another patch (or 2 or 3, or maybe another 5 years) living with the *same bugs that have been around forever, the same horrible performance that has plagued the game for years*, but now we get to deal with *new* bugs as well since ZOS isn't capable of doing proper QA on the sweeping changes introduced in a patch like this. On top of dealing with all of the adjustments necessary to keep up with the giant meta shift.

It's just really frustrating, and honestly the game seems to be in a worse state today than it has been for a very long time.

They don't know HOW TO FIX IT without shutting down all the servers... So 2020 or 21 or 22 doesn't matter. If we keep paying them they will never fix the game like how they should be... Other than they are going to say lies, try to earn time and make some little patches to wounds.

The patch they’re rolling out early is supposed to, among other things, address the frequent crashes everyone is experiencing since the patch they put out this week. If you’ve been crashing a lot since Elsweyr dropped, it could be from something on your end (driver, addons, etc.)

@Jayman1000 If you are a PC player ( if you haven't already ) make sure you update all your addons after a patch. I'm sure you already knew that but just wanted to point it out just in case you haven't.

Its actually still like that. It hasnt changed at all. Its been terrible for over 2 years and they dont seem to take it serious. Only since elsweyr, when performance issues really hit pve, have they seemed to actually talk about it a bit. But at this point its unacceptable, this should have been priority number one for years. And if you want me to show you clips from the last couple years, in the 30 day campaign here on xbox, just ask. And I know the 30 day on PC has been almost as bad over that time as well.

And when did they acknowledge it and improve on it? I dont remember any acknowledgements or improvements.

The thing is they didn't actually fix that- skills still don't fire off when there are even medium sized fights.

Yes. This has been an issue for so incredibly long. I avoid the 30 day on xbox but a few days ago I went in at like 1am just to check it out. Same old BS. Got into a 3v1 at gladesmist with no one around, no other fights, and what happens? My skills are extremely delayed, not going off, or catching up with each other after I cast them (which I suppose is the same thing as being delayed). My bars even glitched out and skills from my back bar were casting while I was on my front bar. That was my first fight, then I left. Its unplayable unless you're in a big group with people to fall back on.

This has always been the norm. For a long time now. Why would we think its going to be different with this fix? I would love for them to fix it. I've been posting about it for years. Because the only populated campaign on xbox is the 30 day. No CP is dead. 7 day is usually dead. So there are no options for small scale players that dont want to deal with lag. Thankfully the sewers have been good this update or idk if i would even be playing.

Hopefully they fix this mess before scalebreaker hits console. But then I wonder if we will get this new "fix". Because if there is a fix im guessing its just going to be for the crashing and wont change performance at all. If they could fix it in a couple weeks they would have done it a long time ago.

This is why people ask them to stop pushing out update after update and take ONE off to work on performance. Because every update they break something and have to work on that. It feels like none of the long term issues ever get fixed, performance being the top one. I was watching a couple clips from nearly 4 years ago today, 2 clips where I hit load screens when a keep flipped and died. And thats just one example. 4 years later and that still happens nearly every time a keep flips.

I second this I watch one person on twitch who was playing on PC and I play on ps4 but I see him literally hardly ever lag and the game runs smooth. Before I use to think it was my connection so I paid more for internet speed, then I thought it was the modem so I bought a expensive modem. I almost bought a ps4 pro but decided not to, but due to having my ps4 for so long and it now overheats and turns off I have to pay for a system now.
