Class Identity. Lets try to be "constructive"

So I feel like a lot of us have been bitching at zos about class identity and their playstyles being pathetic. Rightly so imo, at least from my perspective combat seems to feel the most bland across the classes as it ever has.

So instead of just screaming at zos, I know its hard, i do it frequently. Lets try to give them insight into what playstyles we like from each class and how we enjoy playing each class or at least have in the past. Your version doesnt have to be the same as other people, dont have to argue about it. There can be more than 1 way to play a class, example, non pet mag sorc and pet mag sorc. Just list what classes you play and how you like to play them.

My Favorites:

- NonPet Magsorc, dps, pvp: Have always played this class like a ranged magical version of a brute. Not fast attack wise or speed wise, not mobile, not sneaky or stealthy but can take a big hit and hit like a truck. I also like the sub set of this thats more support oriented. Alot of times when im playing in a group vs solo I will swap out some damage skills to adding in some group support. Like I might swap out meteor for negate or barrier if we have a few negaters in group. Swap out something like inner light for shattering or healing springs on back bar. Still enough dps to take out squishy to like mid defense opponents but probably not killing tankier players without help.

- NonPet Magsorc, dps, pve and Magblade, dps, pve: I hear a lot that this is too similar to Magblade pve. Both are a good mix of aoe dots and single target direct dmg but Ive always felt there is enough differences for them not to over lap. Nonpet is a slower version with less dps were your going to have to watch your sustain but you get a little more survivability. Magblade is a faster go go go spam spam spam dps type of play, they feel different. You also get more dps but your probably not going to survive as well as the non pet. These make nonpet more useful in things like progressions or no deaths and magblade better in like speedrun or score runs. I dont think that is a bad thing either, im ok with classes not being the equal choices for some content at that lvl of planning and group organization. Theres plenty of instances where a group would favor more ranged or melee builds for some content and to me this is no different. The issue I would take is if one cant complete that content on that class. Content should be accessible to call classes even if some are better suited for it.

- Magblade pvp:

Dps: Bomber is awesome, its fun and an icon eso build. One I dont see a lot of anymore unfortunately. Dont think i need so go into this but I will. Go in kill a good portion of a group but your gunna die afterwords unless you a god tier player. Massive aoe damage low survivability.

Support: Oddly enough I have logged a good number of hrs on just a support magblade. A ton spec'd into regen and just go around perma cloaked scouting for group. In fights I dish out a ton of support skills and ulti. Mass hysteric, bolstering darkness, combat prayer, time stop, orbs, purge, siege shield. Guess you could kinda call it a healer but it more of just a perma cloak utility spammer.

- Magplar:

Dps, pvp: Havent spent a ton of time on this but I play it as a melee dot build. Basically the type of build that is doing great in the new meta. I dont actually hate the new meta. Im just pissed off it the only way to play now because everything else is trash. I know theres also a ranged dps build for Magplar, dps, pvp havent tired it so i cant say how it plays.

Healer, pve, pvp: Again dont think I really need to go into this, its a templar healer. They have a good range of support abilities. Its your classic healer support playstyle. Default I want to help players in as many situations as possible but might dont really specialize in anything. Jack of all healers build.

Support pvp: Resplar was dope. Tank that res's players. Necro definitely stole some of its thundered. A lot of people say just playing as the res medic on templar is kinda dead now and I sorta agree. I think templars other utility give is some room to exist still and as a res medic. This is gunna be an unpopular opinion but Id like to see necro get master ritualist..... For me theres not anything that really stands out as making necro a good healer or support healer. Zos keeps trying to beat templar at like the generalized healer game and its not working. Feel like they would have better luck if they made the other healers more specialized and do somethings better than templar but having other areas they are weaker in than the templars like "base line". Necro is about bring things back from the dead so thematically it works at a like res medic type playstyle and adding master ritualist to it would strenghten that playstlye instead of having two classes do it like half well but both lacking.

Anyway, what playstyle do you use on your classes?

I mean... I liked it when Magden had a highly synchronized and position based playstyle with good major expedition uptime on bird of prey, and perfectly synchronized burst combos with a stunning fissure, cliff racer, and force pulse... but since zos nerfed literally every class skill associated with that playstyle into the ground :#

Is was also nice when frost magic active snares were actually more impactful than the passive snares from templar and dk to compensate for the significant lack of damage that comes with using a frost staff. Not sure why zos couldn’t have just given everyone class snare immunity skills instead of nerfing frost magic into the ground but ok... guess now that it’s cc is bad theirs no reason it’s damage needs to be

Unfortunately Magden had its class identity nerfed away with regards to the highly mobility synchronized druid and the attrition based cryomancer... pretty much half the class skills need reworks as screaming cliff racer, growing swarm, winters revenge, expansive frost cloak, arctic blast, frozen retreat, crystallized slab and bursting vines are either useless, completely impractical, or just plain boring... tanks don’t use or need two tank morphs for most every skill in winters embrace and dps can’t be expected to function on half a tree of skills

I'm never quite sure what to say in threads like this because my focus is first and foremost character identity of which classes are only a component of. And honestly, as a veteran of many RPGs both tabletop and electronic, classless systems by far enable me the most creative liberty in crafting the characters in accord with the identity I envision for them. Because of that, I tend to find myself unconcerned with "class identity" in the sense folks who go on about it probably mean.

Where I care about "class identity" is when changes are made to classes that begin to compromise character identity. So far, that hasn't really happened for the most part. There are a few changes that stand out to me as ones that really took something away from my character's identities because of class changes.

The one on my mind currently is that my lightning mage will loose major sorcery from his class next week. With all the other stress going on in my life right now, that revelation made me a good deal more angry than it rightly should have. Nevertheless, it still stands that major sorcery is class-defining for the sorcerer and the loss of it for non-healer magicka sorcerers is unacceptable. Having superior shields is another thing I feel is class defining for the sorcerer. Over the years, that has been pretty thoroughly destroyed to the point I don't even use his class shield anymore. Through that, I feel like the character's identity has lost something because of changes to whatever the developers are envisioning for "class identity" or the white whale of "balance."
