I was talking about my play style, and wrote "the style" and chat put ****** for "e style" - how utterly STUPID is that?

If there is an offensive word from nearly any language ESO filter will remove it, even with spaces. While an English speaker could look at that and have no clue, there is some language that some combination of those letters reads out some sort of bad or offensive word.

It's unfortunate that their filter, meant to keep people from reading excessively offensive language, is so strict that many people end up turning it off in the options just so they can understand the non offensive words being typed.

So someone please explain how the word STYLE can be offensive to anyone? It's used in the game for crying out loud!

It's not the word style, it's a combination of previous letters and the beginning of the word style ...

For example "raci style" would probably trigger the bad word filter. Not defending the poor implementation of a bad words filter here, just stating what i have observed on how it functions.

It's not offensive. The problem is with the extra sensitive chat filter and the fact that it flags words not only in your chosen language of preference, but likely dozens of languages. It will also filter words or combinations of letters that players in general wouldn't find offensive but ZOS doesn't want thrown around to players such as RMT. I couldn't even find what part of E STYLE was offensive with a quick search but I'm sure there is something there. This highlights the problem I posted above. Players would rather just turn off the filter than use it, defeating the entire purpose of the filter to begin with. It's a situation where trying too hard to please too many people just ends up pleasing nobody.

Ah ... now we fill in the blanks that the OP conveniently forgot to tell us. ;)

Yup, can't have a reference to a scientifically accurate name for a biological substance in an M rated game.

Never heard of it either, I just started typing “thestyle” in google until something offensive finally showed up.

Ugh... Like the nonsense about the abbreviation for our post level cap system :|

Honestly, ZOS taught me more inappropriate words through unnecessary censorship than my daily encounters in the game did.
This Bosmer was tortured to death. There is nothing left to be done.

You all know you can just turn off the Profanity Filter in the game?

Then you don't have this issue.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

LOL, no kidding :D I'm not sure whether this thread is a good TIL experience or a sad comment on the futility of the human condition.

The better question is why is your profanity filter enabled?

I would just turn it off. It filters a lot of ridiculous things.
