The scam problem is stupid. Why can't ZoS make crowns "COD" like everything else?
Who creates crowns. only ZoS, so all crowns bought and sold where bought from ZoS. someone in marketing at ZoS that says "let's not do that" We will sell more!
So, hows that working out?

Tamriel crown exchange is probably the best known. All servers and platforms. You have to join their discord to initiate the transfer. They line up the sellers and act as a middle man. There's a mark up so they make gold off the deal but it's all legit.

Short version? Because, while they'll tolerate exchanging crowns for gold, the purpose of the system is exactly what it says, "gifting." This is a system so you can give something to a friend, or acquaintance. Trading Crowns for gold is neither wanted nor supported behavior.

There are, real, reasons to block this kind of behavior. A big one is credit card fraud. Someone buys things with a stolen CC, and then shuffles those off the account to other users, collecting payment, before the transaction is identified and suspended. It hurts the developer, publisher, the cardholder, and the other players who were unwittingly wrapped up in it, while leaving the actual criminals unharmed.

There've also been issues, in other MMOs, with people using RMT currencies (or tokens) to pay for illicit activities in the real world. Getting money out usually goes back to the classic, "gold selling," situation. Though, it'd be easier to say you're selling crowns on ebay and skirt around getting shut down, than actually selling gold would be.

(Normally, I'd throw in citations, but it's kinda hard to dig this stuff up on short notice.)

@starkerealm that is a very bold and wrong claim.. ZOS very much encourage crown trading, you will find ZOS employees on the TCE discords, happily chatting with crown-gold-traders and scammers get reported directly to them.
Just check the discords for yourself, you will find at least Gina Bruno there.

I would not call that "they tolerate it", that's actively helping and encouraging it.
Plus, they have stated on the forums that trading crowns for gold is perfectly fine.

If you can't even spell sets, locations and items, you probably have no clue what you even are talking about.

Tamriel, not Tamerial, Temerial or Tamériál
    Alkosh, not Alkoash
    Dolmen, not Dolman
    Olorime, not Oloramie
    Sorcerer, not Sorceror

I'm familiar with the fact that Gina is there. I'm also fully aware that her presence is not the same as endorsing the activity. If the team wanted crown trading for gold, you'd be able to directly exchange crowns to other players in the trade interface.
