New monitor choice?

hi all, for all you tech savy people out there, I have a bit of a decision to make. I'm needing a new screen and narrowed it down to 2 - I'll link them if thats ok. I love the size of the samsung as its immense, but the Asus refresh rate is pretty amazing as well. Main games I will play is ESO/WOW etc type. Which would people choose on here and why. I'm really struggling with which way to go (samsung is also $1000 cheaper), I have the space for either and the hardware to run either. Any thoughts?? https://www.pccasegear.com/products/46991/asus-rog-pg35vq-uwqhd-200hz-g-sync-qled-hdr-fald-35in-monitor - ASUS https://www.pccasegear.com/products/46705/samsung-crg9-dqhd-s-ultrawide-120hz-49in-qled-curved-monitor - SAMSUNG thanks

I can’t speak to either of those specifically, but I have a 34” 21:9 curved Dell and highly recommend the ultra wide aspect ratio as well as the curved display. ESO does very well with extra wide monitors, I’ve had very few scaling issues (unlike some other games). My only hesitation with buying either of those options is that OLED technology in monitors is right around the corner, and IMO is superior to QLED.

nope I'm serious - I've been saving a hell of a long time for these components and I do not want to get it wrong. If the ASUS was the same size as the samsung it would be a no brainer.

Really what I'm trying to weigh up is - is reducing the size of the monitor for the extra tech really going to be noticable or worth it and is the asus $1000 better.

P.S - I worked really hard to get where I am in my career and be able to splurge from time to time and I'm not sure what my budget is or is not is entirely relevent

If possible make sure that you can test monitor at home as lightning conditions and angle how image look vs in a shop. Check for what range of brightness you can get as during night and day brightness might need to be adjusted so you can see dark scenes. Colour is something that need to be calibrated and can make a lot of difference between display to display. We also have different sensitivity for how out eyes can see different colours and grey scales, so that might also be something that you need to test in person and not just read reviews on.

ASUS PG35VQ seem to be over prices compared to earlier version PG348Q which is 34 inch display with 100 Hz (OC). Checking on net there is actually also 100 Hz version of this SKU which cost much the same as the older PG348Q. Save your money and don't buy that 200 Hz version for around $ 3500 when there is a PG349Q for around 1/3 in price.

What kind of video card do you have? Is it powerful enough to drive a display at 200 Hz? Does it have G-sync (Nvidia tech) or Freesync?

Anyway that 49 inch screen would need a very firm foot to not wobble from displays own weight. Take that also in consideration or your might want to mount display on something more steady then what is delivered from Samsung.

As for only playing ESO with those displays, you don't need 200 Hz as this game really have trouble to even stay around 100 FPS (Hz).

thanks for the advice :) - I did wonder if 200hz etc for the price may be overkill for games like ESO etc. So saying that the samsung is not exactly cheap!! the stand and footing seems really secure as well as managed to have a look at the older model in person.

Currently a 1080Ti, but that will soon be a 2080Ti as I factored in I would likely need a better card for these new screens...

    but sound advice - thanks

Are they both the same resolution? If so, go with the higher refresh rate, that will make your visuals smoother. A more fluid image is better over a bigger image.

In need of a new monitor as well.
My rig is 4k ready. Nividia here so wanting G-Sync. Not sure if I should go for a higher refresh rate or higher resolution and...I am cheap. Hoping to spend 1K or less.

Both of those are a waste of money to be honest. Especially the G-sync one since Nvidia cards now support Freesync.

1080p/1440p at at 120 or 144 hz is a much better gaming experience than 4k at 60 hz.

And Nvidia cards support Freesync now so no need to waste money on a G-sync display. Not that G-sync/Freesync even make that much of a difference.

My 1070 now supports Freesync? That would be nice.

Yep. All Pascal and later cards support it as of last year. I run Freesync on my GTX 1080.

Some monitors are better than others though (some will flicker or have other issues) so read reviews for Nvidia compatability before purchasing (I think Reddit had a running list of most displays).

I don’t think screen refresh rate is comparable to fps. While you cant get a higher fps than your refresh rate. A higher refresh rate will still produce a more natural image.

Also keep in mind your screen can be too big. It depends on the distance between your eyes and the screen. For a 1080 screen 22” is the max for me, at least as pc monitor.

I never had an Asus but samsung has a strong tv/monitor reputation in the industry. They’ve been in the business for a long time. Asus is more known for motherboards. I’d go with the Samsung. Samsung has bright vibrant colors and strong black light. They are the leaders in backplane technology. Also, Unless your playing FIrst person shooters 120hz is more than enough for these mmorpg games. I find anything over 144hz is over kill and quite frankly the human eye can only detect so Much after a certain point.

some advices without specific names. Buy any model you desire:
    - with two HDMI ports
    - with FreeSync
    - without speakers
    - without front buttons (ugly)
    - without front LED indicators (annoying)

curved surface is also nice (deeper image) and especially how it looks from the side. Despite first sentence, it's probably Samsung in the end.

Really depends on the TV. The problem with TVs and gaming is input lag. All the processing that TVs do before displaying the picture causes a noticeable time delay between the TV receiving the signal and displaying the picture. Most good TVs should have a game mode (sometimes called pure or cinema on some TVs) that turns off all processing and minimises input lag, but even this will usually still cause higher input lag than a PC monitor.

When my 200€ 27" 1080 monitor after many years started to die I got a 200€ 32" 1440. Apparently a model which causes boils on gearfags but for me it shows non-triggering abilities, misplaced telegraphs, loading screens and flickering just fine. Or use your tv.
