A GM's thoughts about trade guilds.

First off, these are my opinions. Disagree or agree as you will. Secondly, this is slightly a rant.

(Disclaimer, I may be ranting about it, but I do enjoy trading and making gold! I have made millions and found a livelihood in ESO through trading.)

As a trade gm of a fairly small/medium size guild. (Active players, no fees, but good enough income to sustain that.) we held a trader for roughly a month and a half, paying a very high price for the rather 'meh' location. Our sales did stellar. (A small area, almost pulling 5-10m a week.) and participation in active raffles, auctions, and user-donations was doing pretty well.

We lost our regular spot to a guild in a 'network', yet it seems to be a 'dummy guild'. As in, they actually literally only sell trash. (Pages of under 50 random gear, overpriced random basic mats, or overpriced random items. )

At this point, I kind of was appalled, my first thought was "Really? Okay, well, they wont be around for more than a week like this."

But I was wrong, 3+ weeks of them selling absolute trash, at insane prices. (For instance, there's a starter zone treasure map for 100k What a deal!) they couldn't conceivably be making over 100k in a week.

I mean.. whos paying for that, seriously? Who wants to fund that trader when the sales are going to be microscopic?

So, in my opinion. I welcome the next update with 10 trader bids, it'll help the serious medium/small guilds be able to diversify their bids and locations and not get booted out of a trader which was doing well.. by a dummy guild.

As another opinion, I don't think Dummy Guilds like that should be a thing. Do you have that many members that other branches of a guild may be needed? Sure, that's fine. But to the point where you probably have the same 50 members from your main guild come to a dummy guild to buy another trader, kicking an active group out to sell absolute trash?

I am in full support of multiple branched guilds that actually do need the room for hundreds of players.

Lastly, just a few questions.

How do you feel about the multiple bid update? I can see where it'll have issues, yes, but im overall excited for it.

Do you feel that trader prices will rise with said update? Or even are rising now?

How do you feel about the trading system in general?

On console, so it's pretty simple. There might be some of these tactics happening behind the scenes there, but I really don't here about it too much. I list some items and get some cash in the mail for it. You seem to be on a different level in terms of the extent you are engaged with the guild traders, so my experience is much less than yours. But overall, it's been working fine for me so these changes are moot.

There are currently two exhaustive threads with opinions of many GMs and non-GMs alike that answer your questions on our thoughts. Rather than re-write or copy-paste what's already been discussed, I'll direct you to the links. The second one is a particularly good read, I think, as far as viewpoints go.

under 50 pages, lets say 40 are still A LOT OF ITEMS!
If you consider 30 items listed per acc is max, that's a lot of players.

Don't forget, if they are a social guild, where a lot of players feel "at home"... THEY WILL DONATE!
A trading guild without weekly fees or requirements will loose against such a guild with ~100 members in terms of income for bidding.
Well, it's a lot more work to keep such a guild working and healthy.

A trading guild with 500 ppl where you don't interact, maybe once per week for some lottery ... *shrug*. Sounds boring and also easy to manage... as you don't even have to check for the weekly fee or sales requirements.
The only hardships I would see are the low donations/support from the members.
    • (Example Trading Guild only -> trader spot lost -> some players are leaving and joining another trading guild to have their spots -> you loose active traders... .and ppl who are interested in making money
    • Example "Content Guild" -> bid lost -> Mail with "we need more shiny coins" -> no one leaves the guild but donations increase!.

My guild in question tends to be a "do everything" type of guild. While, we're not strictly focused on trading, it is something that is well looked after by myself. It is a very socially active guild. We run many events, have quite numerous donations and raffle purchases, and theres more often than not ongoing banter in the discord/in game.

As I aforementioned, we sustained a trader for a month and a half straight. So income isn't an ungodly problem. Sure, compared to some guilds that is pretty meager. But we're also a relatively new guild. (Barely 4 months old!) and our membership is/has been 370-400+ for the last month or so. (We do have an inactive policy at that, so we're pretty active!)
