Grindy Skill Lines: Why Pay?

Numerous skill lines are for sale next patch.

#1 the cost is absurd
#2 if we’ve already grinded through the skill lines on one character. We should just automatically get the skill lines max level when a new character gets to level 50.

Come on community! Don’t just roll over and take it. Pay to win is a slippery slope. And don’t get charged for something you already earned!

At the very least just get the skill line once maxed on one character. It's pretty annoying to have to redo the Psijic Order skill line on many characters.

And it's not pay to win, it's purely convenience. Access to general skill lines on store are obtainable through playing the game via grind for it.

Pay for convenience. Nothing more because you previously need to unlock the purchasable lines with a char at least.

I've already ground several toons through some very annoying skill lines. I could do it again. But I will pay for the convenience of not having to.

(Although I may not need caltrops anymore anyway since they're going to be worthless.)

I really don't know what the big deal is about those skill lines. Most of them are bordering on useless after the first few ranks. Hell, the Psijic line is basically just a flavor thing.
I really, really hope people don't spend their money on this crap.

I feel like paying once wouldn't be such a bad thing. For example, buy a specific bookshelf/housing item once to place in the house. Then all your characters can use it to gain the maxed out skill line (after having it maxed on one toon already).
It's paying multiple times for the same thing is the annoying part.

PvP potentially, specifically for lower level characters. You could make a new character, get him to level 10, buy all the Skill Lines, and then go dominate Under-50 BGs and PvP.

So what? I can get psijic and mages guild at level 10 If i would grind it there. Undaunted is just passive wise and wont make you automaticly "dominate".

They only problem is fighters guild with dawnbreaker. But i dont think this is a big deal tbh.

Why? That's never happened in any other MMO I've played, so where does this idea even come from?

This isn't anything remotely like "achievements should be account-wide", it's much more entitled than that.

Both the skill lines and Skyshard unlocks should be both on the crown store and buy-able directly with in game gold, to act as a gold sink.

People who don't have the gold/patience will just buy crowns to unlock them.

Those that have reached that point where they have excess gold will have something to spend it on, other than houses.

Other MMOs make old content obsolete and irrelevant, keeping the time to max out a new char fairly constant. In ESO if you want to max out your char, you have to do ALL of the content, because the Psijic skill line was not made obsolete by the Elsweyr release, and neither were the skill points you get there. And after 5 years of DLCs, there is a hell of a lot of such content. This makes it harder and harder for me to justify buying an additional char slot to level an alt.

There needs to be a catch-up mechanism that doesn't involve paying real money. It doesn't have to be an automatic unlock, but there has to be something that you can reasonably do in-game to gain those things faster once you've done the content with one char.

My point is, we shouldn’t have to pay for this at all. They’re converting an intentionally grindy mechanic into a revenue stream. It’s pay to win. It’s charging players real money for a quality of life improvement.

I’m surprised people are just rolling over and taking it.

Undaunted/Fighters Guild/Mages Guild comes with actual stat increases. Saying its only just convenience is flat out wrong. You're paying for stat increases. You know what else gives stat increases? Gear. You know what would be convenient? Buying vMA or Master weapons? I mean, you can grind them, sure, and I've already beaten vMA and vDSA, buying these would just be convenient.....
Why not? It's just about the same stupid argument being used for undaunted and guild skill lines.

This is the ridiculous path ESO is going down. What's sad is some players would actually champion that if it came to be.

I asked on another thread when someone said it was pay to win for under 50 / no CP pvp, as it seemed that was all they liked playing - my question is HOW do they keep playing it, as its really easy to level up to 50 - and then what? Delete and make another character? You cant stay in there forever....

It really isn't a slippery slope. There is a clear division between selling things that raise your power level at max level to a place where people can't match it without paying. Sure, these compromise competitiveness in under-50 PvP. That can be fixed by banning characters that use these paid shortcuts from under 50 PvP.

I have never paid for progress, but cost is not absurd for everyone. Many consider the grind absurd. Why have mindnumbing repetition? I have 18 character slots and I level them the hard way. But I would be completely fine with letting people pay to go straight to 50 on alts. We have all the slots, so let's facilitate people trying a variety of classes, races, and builds. It would be great if we could get such things for free, but I am also fine monetizing it.

Look at it this way. Name a single meta build that will cease to be meta when they start selling skill lines for alts. There aren't any because this has no impact on what are the most powerful builds.

Does that actually matter? Does that change the fact these guild lines give stat increases?

But to answer the question, yes, a player who gets thier jollies off on only fighting newer, undergeared players will level to 49 and start over. This is the same type of player that has golded out nirnhoned weapons and gear for every 5 levels and is afraid to do real PvP.

The kind of player who wouldn't think twice of buying something over and over for a stat increase.

Why stop at skill lines. Might as well sell gear too right? That’s a hell of a grind too.

It’s not necessarily that grindy if you do it in the context of the game as a whole. Have 16 characters, and level them up by questing, doing pledges, crafting etc. As you go through the zone stories you usually get enough xp to max out most skill lines.

It becomes grindy when people want to make characters for pvp/end game stuff, and dont want to go through the zone quests again. Which I understand (I hate Coldharbour. Done it on 9 alts now. Got it down to a find art).

I personally don’t think you should have account wide skill lines. And I’m only ok with them selling them if a) have to have done it at least once & b) they charge an amount that makes people stop and think about it first.

Which is skeevy and revolting. There should either be in-game alternative ways to max skill lines, nerf requirements after the first time, or provide some kind of earnable in-game currency to speed your progress. The grindiness is a game engineering issue and the solution to ameliorate it should be in the game, not in our wallets.

I refuse to buy this crap, and if I find the requirements for any skill line too high, I skip it entirely.
