Is some DPS abilities getting nerfed really a reason to stop playing a class?

I got this game in 2015-2016 haven’t been playing much. Decide to start a new character, etc, etc. I decided to get back into the game while I’m waiting for the new SWTOR expansion to come out.

When a class gets ‘nerfed’ is it really that bad to the point where you believe you can’t play your main anymore? I’ve been browsing around, lurking, watching the discussions and it seems like people are quitting(?) for what seems like minor changes.

Would you really change your main instead of learning to adapt/favorite class to play due to the changes?

(Only asking this because it seems really weird to me. In the aforementioned game, everything is basically viable even if you get nerfed to the ground. Just wondering if it was like that in ESO.)

I've never changed my class based on balance changes directly, I did change my main from a Nightblade to a Necromancer because I no longer enjoyed the Nightblade, but that's also because I always wanted to be a Necromancer.

Yes. If my main played a certain way and then it was changed...to a point I can no longer play that "style" then it's(to me) not the same class I started playing.

Example...my main is a pet sorc. Played since...veteran levels where a thing. I enjoy it because it's a powerful heavy pet themed class and in all my Elderscrolls games I've favored a class that favored pets/minions. Now if the devs destroyed it by nerfing the class to the point my dps is better without the pets....what's the point of playing a weak pet class? So in closing...yes i would drop a class if it no longer resembles the class i fell in love with.

I stuck it out through the devs taking my clanfear taunt away.....them nerfing my shields. But if the upcoming changes are bad enough...i might just only use him as a crafter. He's a master crafter after all so he still has his uses.

I'm now leaning more towards Necros.....been enjoying the class so far. It's not exactly a pet class persay....but it's close.

Ive played a nonpet magsorc since I got this game. Ive played it nerf after nerf after nerf. I would honestly keep playing it. Its at point now where I cant. Am I to throw down my dots that do basically no damage, spam force pulse with my terrible sustain. All while having no survivability?

Theres no point in playing that, no matter how much you like the class. Its not a functioning class at that point. You cant make a functioning build outta it.

Magblade, magcro, magden are just as bad. Pet sorc is probably the best magclass as of right now and thats gutted asf

When nerf after nerf after nerf results in stripping the fun out of a class, yes. When you invest significant time and effort in building a character and play style, then ZOS comes along with more "visionary" gutting, you start wondering what the point is of continuing. I love playing this game, but these continual heavy handed changes are certainly "killing it" for me.

Before Elsewyr I played a stam NB but now I'm on my stamden 100% of the time for my prog team as it's rotation is less complicated and I can hit harder. Plus it's rotation is far more forgiving with the awful lag in trials on Xbox EU at the moment.
My Stam NB is just doing writs at the moment to keep himself busy & slowly level some skills.

Maybe. I don't play every class, I play the ones that I enjoy playing. Some do, that's fine but not my cup of tea. DPS isn't always a measurement that accurately describes how much fun I'm having, so the nerfs need to be looked at as a whole.

If the nerfs render that character, that I have invested a significant amount of time into, unable to provide me enjoyment, yes. If not, I'll continue on playing them. That is after all why I am here. Its why I give ZOS money. Its entertainment.

I think that it's a little premature to say at the moment. ZOS has the arduous task of giving us what we need and deciding whether or not what we ask for is indeed what we need. I'm willing to wait this out and see, but some of these changes have me scratching my head.

I played stam dk for many years until I got bored of it and changed to mag dk. It made me a reason to play the game again, I had very fun. Now this patch the mag dk identity is completely gone. Magic dmg dot's are more dmg than fire dots. I also loved the AOE mag dk's put out, and I often used lightning staff to boost it even more. It was really fun and worked very good. But now after reading patch notes carefully twice as well as being on pts a few times, I lost motivation. I don't know what to do now.

Nope, even now I still mostly use sweeps as a magplar and stay mellee despite it not being meta.
I’ll never be a player that competes for the highest scores or some of the more extreme achievements like Tick Tock etc. I can do enough to complete all veteran content based on how I enjoy playing and that’s enough for me.

I started a few months ago as a magplar healer. I will likely always consider this my "main" in terms of quest completion, zone completion, crafting, etc.

Right now, it's also my go-to for group content, as it's more developed than my stamden DPS or DK tank, and my other alts are not even 50. Will that change? Maybe. Could be I de-emphasize one character or other for a while. If the others are more fun to play, why would I not?

I set up a zoo sorc about a month ago, and made a WW last week. Great timing, right? I'm not going to delete them, and I'll even try to keep playing them. But if they aren't fun to play, I have plenty of other things to do (in-game, let alone my backlog of offline games and like...fixing up my house. My real house.). They might be more fun to play later, so why not wait?

I'm not a good player by any means and my current DPS is barely acceptable as it is. If my pet sorc gets nerfed she will not be viable for vet group content.

I can try to adapt, but last time I checked I wasn't being paid for this work.

Some abilities getting nerfed means they need to be replaced with other abilities, if you replace abilities you have to change rotation, if you change rotation muscle memory goes to trash and you need to relearn. Since you need to relearn stuff anyway why not just pick new alpha class along the way and get the most out of it?

I really love my character. And how I'm playing him today has nothing to do with how I played him when I started. He's like Rajhin and his seven shadows.

If they nerf anything, I'll just use something else. I'm not playing for a specific gameplay, I welcome change.

No it isn't but it does depend on how you enjoy the game, some can argue that if you nerf certain abilities even if they aren't class skills but you use them as part of your rotation it can interrupt the fluidity of your build and thus ruin the experience for you.

I dont follow this train of thought myself but I know others who do, if its awkward to play its not fun.

The other is people who tunnel on mini-maxing if the class is under-performing they will just stop playing because its not what they enjoy. I.e Top tier groups will often use whatever they consider to be the most powerful.
Ah, e-communities - the "pinnacle" of the internet............yeah, right.

If you enjoy it with pets then that's enough of a reason.

If you really played with pets then you've played with them when they were weaker that not using pets. So you intentionally played a weaker spec because you like it. Which is great.

So now they're bringing them down to non broken carry levels, why won't you play now?
