I'm not 100% sure I'm reading your post correctly, but it sounds like you're getting confused with an existing game. Amazon's LOTR game is a brand new project.

I spent eight years in LOTRO. Not sure I’m ready for another LOTR-inspired MMO, and am frankly confused as to why Amazon is working on one.

This is the first I've heard of it and a free to play MMO made by Amazon doesn't sound appealing to me, so probably not.

But I'm also not one of these people who plays just one game at a time and has to quit it to pick up another one, maybe because the vast majority of games I play are not MMOs. I own dozens of games on various formats and I just play whatever I feel like at the time. The only reason I'd stop playing one is because I'm bored with it, and even then it's not really a conscious decision to 'quit' so much as I just keep choosing to do other things instead. Of course there is a time when I get a new game I like and I'm playing that more than anything else, but I wouldn't say I've quit all my others, just that I'm currently playing them less, then later on the balance will shift again, and again and again based on what I feel like doing at the time.

So if I do decide to try this game, or any other, I'd still play ESO alongside it and if/when I do stop playing ESO it will be purely because I've gotten bored with it (or because they shut the servers off!) not because something new was released and I felt it was necessary to quit everything else to play it.

Is there a mac version? If so I would check it out. ESO is quickly losing my loyalty.

Yeah I am currently in a holding pattern until Cyberpunk.

if it's good, yes, every update eso is sucking more and more fun out of the game for me.

It’s difficult to make a decision of “leaving” ESO for another game before that game has even been released.

I am personally looking forward to Ashes of Creation, but if that game turns out to be a flop then obviously I’m not going to keep playing it. So the same applies to the new LOTR game. We’ll just have to wait and see how it turns out.

Hmm, looking into it further, and it looks like it’s set in the first or second age of Middle-earth and is not contemporaneous with the events of LotR (unlike LOTRO). I might check it out, because I’m a Tolkien geek and love The Silmarillion. If it were just another LOTR MMO, there’s no way I would have ventured back into that story. Like I said, been there and done that for eight years in LOTRO.

It’s possible (errr, sarcasm!) they are doing it to promote the lotr show that they are spending more money on than the movies cost to make (a lot lot lot of money, over $500 million).

Not enough information, but f2p does not sound promising.
