2h builds: How much of a difference between Axe and Greatsword?

Just a quick question about Axes and Greatswords. Does anyone know how much of a difference there is between the two. Judging by the passives Axe seems to be better for single target, where as Greatsword seems to be better for AOE. I ask because I have a perfect Lokkestiiz Battle Axe and am not sure if I should use it or wait for a Greatsword.

Personally I find it comes down to rng vs a fixed bonus, the greatsword will always give a fixed result while the axe is a bit more reliant on luck, it can do a lot or very little. I would be delighted with either of them

Are we talking PvP or PvE?

Generally speaking, a Greatsword is better for PvE and the Battleaxe is better for PvP. My primary experience is in PvE and I can tell you that you'll see at least a 2k dps difference with the Greatsword coming out on top.

Now, go ahead and use the Battleaxe that you got, but I would switch to a Greatsword as soon as you get one.

For people who wants to ask about the Maul...never use it. Ever.

    20% penetration trumps all.

The only time 20% Penetration trumps anything else is when that 20% Penetration is greater than a flat 6% damage increase, or a static Bleed.

So you need to ask yourself: how often does that 20% Penetration equate to a 6% or greater increase in overall damage, or equate to a sustained, static Bleed that ignores resists entirely?

Sadly, with U23 the Axes are going to be useless entirely. (Unless the Weapon passives are going to be the exceptions and still ignore resists.)

In my opinion, Maces/Mauls could use a rework in these passives. Maybe a 20% Slow X% of the time? Something useful that could be counted on reliably, similarly to the other bonuses. (Though a slow would be useless in PvE, yes.)

Use it, they're virtually the same. Greatsword will be better on trash, but then again you can't spin-2-win on trash either.

On trash you switch to Master's two-hander and carve-2-win.

Or hit carve once and reverse slice to win.

in PvP, 20% is known to be better than 6% flat increase or Bleed.

    Speaking of Bleed, ...
Heavy Weapons: The axe bleed from this ability now ticks every second instead of every 2 seconds, and has had its total damage increased by approximately 24%.
    Twin Blade and Blunt:
The axe bleed from this passive now ticks every second instead of every 2 seconds.
Increased the total damage by approximately 24%.

I think Axes will be stronger than ever.

naah bro... Carve with vDSA axe is true spammable. 60% dmg on other enemy can't beat, what, 9k extra damage if u got max number of trash?

Skyreach is boring with Master 2H axe, and or Cyrodiil keep resources solo....

20% penetration > 6% damage done if target is at 22.5k or more resists, which is easily the majority of players (and the vast vast majority of competent players). People can run 35k resists in light armour or nearing 40k in heavy so slashing that is a big deal. Doubly so if you're running something like Spriggan or points in piercing since maul's pen comes before these (but after fracture).
