I'm a new player. How useful are combat pets in solo PvE?

To begin with, I thought they were quite useful.

However now as a magsorc, I have such powerful nuking skills that my pet seems like a little gimp - not contributing much.

Are pets useful? If so, how do you use them?

Warden Bear can be useful fighting multiple overland bosses and groups of enemies in dungeons or getting Cyrodiil Resources. I dont know the sorc well, but i think one is a good heal and one a good tank.

On easy content the pets are not so helpful. They are good guardians when fishing though :)

Edit: On Y + click or heavy attack they attack your target. Those are the only pet commands and console/gamepad has no Y :)

My first and main is a magsorc pet. Pets are VERY useful for overland PVE. Most mobs you cam burn down yourself. But World Boss's (WB) are much tuffer for a new player. And the pets help a lot.

The Twilight pet can heal and the scamp with its AOE pulse ability can kill mobs fast and it's single target is not bad eithe couple that with your shield and you can solo most anything. Back in the day the clanfear could taunt enemies and that was what i used to run.

What i run now is the healing twilight and the scamp....with Maw of Infernal for the temp Daedroth pet. I use the necropotence set (found in overland Riverspire zone) which is tailor made for sorc pet build. I've soloed almost all WB's, I've completed VMA (easy with pet builds), soloed some vet dungeons. But if you plan on just doing regular overland quest then any build will do. But if you like me and hate waiting on help to kill WB's then this is the build for you.

On a magic sorc, pets are extremely powerful, especially if your goal is to solo content designed for multiple players. They provide both passive and active damage, a wonderful heal, and they reduce damage taken as they essentially act as body guards. A pet sorc is also hands down the easiest way to tackle VMA the first time as well. Pretty much every time I see I video of someone soloing content that I thought was unsoloable (that a word?), it was done by a pet sorc.

Do you need them for questing and overland content? Of course not. As a sorc, you could beat the entire main quest with a lighting staff just heavy attacking.

I have a magward and a stamward. Both run the bear and I very much prefer doubleslotting an ult and having 10 active skill slots available (unlike a magsorc). The bear is handy for its passives and, if I send it in first via command, it will reliably hold aggro long enough for me to get my AoEs down on top of the fight. In group dungeons, they are 'invulnerable' but it seems the trade off is that they don't get any aggro at all - the moment you send them to a foe the foe ignores the bear and charges you.

My magsorc runs just the matriarch and, except for the oversize flappywings, is happy with it. Her reasoning involved the following considerations:
    - We wanted to augment surge with a bit more healing ability for tough situations.
    - Dual destr staves so she could run blockade on front and eledrain on back bar - that eliminated resto staff for heals.
    - Desire to help herself or allies in a pinch with a helpful burst heal if needed - that eliminated dark conversion.
    - Wanted the potent passives for slotting a pet from the summoning line and the necropotence set.

Turns out that by having to double slot the matriarch, this sorc is extremely quick to react with a burst heal without missing a beat in her rotation.

I do play on PC and run the Pet Dismiss add on. It makes dismissing the pet in town when she would get in the way incredibly easy with a single click. Highly recommended for PC players with pets.

Or you can right click the pet in the character menu with the buff lists.

Before the addon, I used to do that and found it just a bit too tedious to routinely do. Now I just tap a chosen hotkey (even mounted or once teleporting animation has begun or at crafting table) and poof. Saving a few steps caused it to be convenient enough to routinely and reliably use. Ymmv.

Gimp? Sorc pets carried many a noob through vMA. Highest DPS magicka build is a pet sorc.

Pets are always useful but don't really rise above alternatives until you're solo'ing group content which you can comfortably do with sorc, warden or necro pets. Probably also nb ones but I've not tried that personally.

They can also be helpful for thieving. If you get noticed by a guard and have a pet out, they will defend you. Which can facilitate your escape.
