Sure. And your point is? What constructive criticism can we take from your post? Are you implying gear should drop at a lower quality?

there's...a lot to go over with your post. there's a lot that could be said but...

it's pretty clear you're only interested in oversimplifying everything, so it's likely not worth anyone's time to try and partake in a discussion with you.

    good day.

edit: i will allow myself to make one sarcastic comment. "waaah, waaah!! why do people want to have a shorter grind in games? they're obviously just not as smart as me!"

that's you. that's how you sound. now go and tell us all how you were just being the epic troll all along and we took the bait.

Is this really the fault of players, or is it fact the fault of the devs? Blue=rare, however that's legitimately not the case today, blues are everywhere to the point that they really are vendor trash.

    Everything else though I agree.

Well, in other MMOs, gear is where they placed the endgame grind. CP grind is ZoS's way.

In ESO, the color isn't even about rarity. It's just about quality. I think the old mindset of "only the most devout nerds with the most time to invest should get this color of equipment" went extinct when MMO devs realized that players will continue to play, and pay, regardless of what color their gear is as long as the content is enjoyable.

Generation has nothing to do with it, first off.
Secondly, I think it's a matter of context and priorities. Early 2000s I was a teenager, living at home, going to school, I had tons of free time. Camping for literal weeks in EQ1 for a drop was a pain, but it was satisfying and felt worthwhile.

These days? I do not have the time for that nonsense. I play games to enjoy myself and escape the doldrums. To live out a rich internal life in a rich fantasy world.
My sense of accomplishment these days stems from defeating challenging encounters, either solo or with a group of friends. It comes from experiencing compelling stories as I adventure through zones.

These days, the gear is incidental and I am glad that I only have to pay it as much attention as I feel like, as opposed to the debatable "good old days" of rare drops, long camps, and fruitless, tedious grinds.

I respect your perspective, but I suspect that if faced with the way things used to be, most people bemoaning the supposed "instant gratification" of newer games would balk at having to sit in one spot doing *nothing* for actual whole days for the chance at a rare drop.
But thats just my 2 copper on the matter. I treasure my memories of those days, but I absolutely do not miss them.

    Generation "Instant Gratification" ruined MMORPGs

    It's a factor.

But really... youtube and the proliferation of the internet was what ruined mmo's.

Back in the early days of mmo's, there was an advantage to exploration and finding locations. Knowing your way around a "dungeon" was enough to get you in a group. Now it's "check youtube" as the default. Boss fight? Check youtube. etc.

Overall, I don't blame "youtube" or "the internet" though. It's the developers that didn't account for the fact that any game with enough users would have *spoilers* propagated about.

Shoooooot, back in my day we didn't even have mmos. Now they just sit in their parent's basements playing video games and eating Doritos. We were out in VIET FIN NAM! I was waist deep in rice paddies!

For real though, the fact that any generation is sitting around playing video games is pretty laughable in the larger scale, regardless if back in the day it was "grindy" and required playing all day to get loot. I like that I don't have to waste too many hours for a chance at perfect gear. I'd rather play a bit and get to exercise or visit friends or family.

Anyways, I got to get back to work. I just killed a deer with my barehands and I know I'll have to wrestle some bears to keep them off my food.

I'd argue that 'arbitrarily restricting access to content behind a random number generator' is far worse for an MMO because when players can't actually, you know, play the game then they... don't. And they take their subs with them as they go.

This isn't 2004, MMOs aren't this new thing that no one's tried out, and they aren't only played by a small sub-group of nerds with lots of spare time on their hands. It's a large and deadly competitive industry, played by all sorts of people as social gaming experience. MMOs have evolved and shook off a lot of old systems because they didn't work and/or weren't fun, or else they were reworked/refined into their modern equivalents.

If ESO was the type of game where I couldn't do dungeons I wanted until I farmed the exact right super-rare bracelet from a rare mob named Idiot-Face the Brazen in the Wastes of Gohfaqurself, and was something I could only MAYBE loot once per week, then I would just... not play. I would go play a game where I could just get the gear through reasonable means, and then go do the thing I want to do and have fun. Which is the type of game ESO is, fortunately for me.

I do recall some early mmos using blue to be common items and green to be uncommon.

Then other games had green being common and blue being uncommon.

    It's all relative.

I'd say you're part of Generation Waste Time Arbitrarily Because That's Just How It's Always Been, but it's really not a generational problem, seems more like a you problem. There is absolutely no reason to turn games into an incessant grindfest and ZOS makes the right call every time when they choose to put hard caps on grinding or generally make it more accessible. People have lives, if you want to spend months grinding pointlessly then go load up some Disgaea or something, the rest of us prefer a sane improvement schedule.

I'm sure that oversimplified narratives that rationalize hating on entire groups of people have their appeal to a certain denominator. I would recommend getting out of that denominator as soon as possible for your own health and well-being.

    Instant gratification?
Tell me do you use add ons to find stuff? Folks want things easy there is no shame in that.

Like a previous poster (Earrindo) I grew up playing Everquest, yes it was hard, yes it was long and frustrating and took literally months to get items (don't get me started on class weapons), do I feel proud of what I achieved in that game over 12+ years? yes I do BUT would I do it again? HELL NO

I wouldn't wish that sort of grind on my worst enemy.

Don't blame the players, we live now in a world where everything is instant, order today get today.
Im old, hell I used to have to walk 3 miles to go and queue up to use a telephone.

That said we all play games to have fun and escape, it shouldn't be a second job, life is more important.

    Be safe

F2P is what killed MMOs. That's the instant gratification that is at fault. Nevermind playing the game to get things..let's just buy the items directly and skip the game entirely. To the extent that any generation has contributed to that model being so successful is where I lay the blame but it was game devs that made the decision to even offer it in the first place. If EQ had released with a cash shop and loot boxes and all this other MT garbage I would have never gotten into MMOs in the first place.

Former Everquest player here too. I absolutely loved that game. When it came out in 98 I blown away and a Evercrack addict from the get go. The idea I could play a rpg with all these from all over the world was mind blowing. Grind? Their really was no quests. You leveled up grouping up with other players and finding a good camp spot for your level and grinding to he same mobs over and over till you was ready to move to a higher level spot. Ever group required at least the 3 holy trinity Tank, Healer, Enchanter / Bard ( crowd control). Solo? Some classes could effectively grind low lvl mobs that were just about to stop giving xp. I remember there being a joke about a Warrior solo’d a green conning mob. Time to nerf them!

I still remember when one of the main developers sent a system wide message asking for everyone to get their friends to log in cause they was about to hit 400,000 players online for the first time. 400,000? Modern games have way more than that online all the time.

This generation didn’t ruin anything. Consumers changed it cause their more of us that enjoy the content that you don’t like. While it was a blast back then it was mainly cause there’d never been any thing like it before. When we realized we could still have fun playing a Mmorpg without having to stay in one spot killing the same mobs over and over we voted with our wallets.

If anything you should be upset with people like yourself who haven’t found a game that caters to your likes. Maybe Brads new game will come out someday and do that.
