Being 100% honest, how would you describe these forums(only forums) to a newcomer?

Well its a pretty good game with some annoying issues, one of is communication with customers. As a result forums are pretty whiny place (myself guilty too).

Please keep it civil, and most of all, honest. I'm curious.

The part you are obviously missing is that these forums are the *only* place for players that have problems with the game to have any chance to get a response from ZOS other than the in-game tickets.

So your bias towards the overall tone in these forums is misplaced ...

Some times it seems like Zos pays more attention to reddit than to their own forums though.

Overall extremely friendly. But the first page can at times have posts which are a bit negative.

Don't judge a book by it's cover. At times negativity has the spotlight, but most often I am amazed what a great forum this is. Like "wha? So many being helpful, friendly and polite all in one place? o.O What is this place..." (Yes I am being honest. :p )

Compare this to the forum for World of Warcraft...wow. xD We win.

We also get attention on Reddit and Twitter, but I do agree this seems like the primary most obvious place for it. My bias applies to avoid derailing though. Or so I'm hoping. Interesting to read some opinions, specially from people you see a lot around these forums.

Many good feelbacks get ignored quite often. Some of "fans" here will always sugar coat issues and find excuse for ZoS. hijacked thread and make thread locked really quick. If you have a rough day, some of complaints here can make you laugh.

I'll still suggest new players visit forum, assume you won't easily getting offended, since we're all adults here.

I still try to help people as much as i can but i have become bitter over the last 5 (almost 6) years.
There's only so much frustration one can bottle up before it starts to ooze out again.

Overall i think these forums are still one of the better examples, i have seen *much* worse.
There's a lot of good people here and a lot of helpful threads, posts and comments.

One has to be a bit thick skinned and able to sift through the noise to get to the good stuff, but again, i don't think it's that bad at all ...

I sit somewhere between trying to help and being annoyed by it. I've been helped enough that I feel I should try to pay it forward, but some bad days (after pts drops and then again after live) are just a no no for me.

What I'm getting from these replies is that aside from some seemingly hurt souls, most people find this place useful, if not the most pleasant.

As for sending new players here... I'm closer to "yeah... Wait a few days before trying that".

I would tell people to be careful, there is really useful and informative content, the patch notes, the various official announcements, but how the forums depicts the game is far from reality. People should take a step back, because if you trust the general consensus on the forum, you can easily lose your enjoyment of the game.

Use it. Also use critical thinking skills to sift through the posts, obviously. But overall the Forums are incredibly useful.
Guild recruitments, in-depth class information, up-to-date reports on issues and bugs, question feature for custom advice, etc. The forum is an incredibly useful resource and should be a super helpful all-in-one stop for most players.

This. I learnt lots from reading these forums, even from General Discussion after wading through the (sometimes justified|) whining. Here in particular there is the need for your own critical thinking, a bucket load of scepticism and a pinch of humour. Being able to get a response from Zos and give feedback is important, even if they are not constantly in touch.

It's better for experienced players who are already entrenched in the game, as they can enjoy the good parts without feeling like the playerbase is so toxic that they need to leave. New players, however, can easily get the wrong picture from these forums, as an awful lot of the worst parts of the playerbase seem to like to start threads here. Experienced players can separate the wheat from the chaff in the forums pretty easily, but new players aren't able to do that as much, so it's easier for them to get discouraged by the forums.

Wholeheartedly agree. I played off and on PC from may 2014, then went to console in 2016, didn't even activate a forum account until August 2018.

By then I was getting more in-depth on theory crafting and the nerfs/buffs were finally impacting my builds, where some new players may not even notice them.

Agree that this forum is very tame comparatively.

Only thing that has some informative value are Patch Notes, announcements and maintenance banners.

Other than that, this is just a place full of crying wannabe debaters that no developer will ever take seriously. The only ZoS employees that read this bs are forum moderators whose only competence is baning vulgar/racistic/xenofobic/... comments.

    • Useful, but do your own research.
    • Not representative of the player base as a whole (the whole let's unsub now because ZOS broke something again approach)
    • Amusing, some great posts from some really interesting people
    • Educated, in the main, most people here are mature gamers who know their stuff and aren't stupid enough to make recommendations about something they know nothing unlike many Facebook groups.
    • Overly populated by PvPers who are constantly whining about the state of Cyrodiil (not surprising as it's pretty bad) gives a false impression that the whole game is bad
    • Surprisingly little toxicity
    • Very international and welcoming to those with a genuine question

A place filled of misinformation and biased af people. Badly regulated, it's an amazing place where to have a good laugh about the living memes that write here. Oh, it also explains very well why 1vX is still alive in this game despite the multiple attempts zos made to delete that gameplay. If certain people in here are this bad, can you imagine how little understanding the averga causal pug has in cyro?

Unfortunately due to the cumulative nature of the warning / suspension system, most posters who are veterans, talented, and who care about accuracy of information.. well they’ve almost all been banned. On the boards, if someone is wrong about what’s strong or weak or OP etc, and you know that that person has no actual understanding of it due to their noviceness, lack of skill, or low-bar playstyle (ie zerging), then you aren’t allowed to correct them or even tell them that they’re wrong. Because let’s face it - people that only PvP casually really don’t understand the game that well due to this game’s immense complexity. But if you tell them that they’re casual and that if they played at a higher level then their opinion would be different then you’re the one who’ll get banned. The current debate about faction locks is a great example of that divide. I know at least two top-tier PvP players who were banned for correcting people whose cyrodil playtime was less than 5% of the people who got banned. Reddit is even worse.

Only place to get great advice is discord now. And if you aren’t part of the PvP community you’ll have a hard time getting into servers with talented people. This makes it harder and harder for newer players to bridge the skill / build gap between themselves and the PvPers that are farming them. This, in turn, leads to frustration and people quitting.

    - Vital place to come to learn about the depths of the game, changes, patch notes, future changes, comments from devs etc
    - some mega helpful, friendly players with a huge breadth and depth of knowledge
    - great help from mods, forums staff, design leads etc
    - alot of change adverse people / rage about change
    - alot of Sorc hate
    - requests for auctions houses we don't want
    - Gina memes on patch day
    - cat pics

I digress. Honnestly this place is an awesome resource, but negativity does spin up alot recently. But see through that. I've found a wealth of helpful people had alot of direct chats with about builds and help

A large tour group stays at a hotel.

The breakfast consists of fried food.

    There is a feedback wall.

A percentage of the tour group start to feedback that they would like something different for breakfast, not take away the fried food, just add something else like fruit and cereals.

Other members of the tour group also start writing on the feedback wall - "stop whining I like fried food", "There is nothing wrong with the breakfast, you are wrong" "go find another hotel where they serve cereals, this isn't the place for you".

"but we aren't saying take the fried food away, just give us an alternative, after all we paid for this hotel too and we like it here, we come every year after all" say the people who want something different.

"no you are wrong its fine how it is"

    "Cant we have a choice?"

"no you are wrong, get ye to another hotel"

    "?"

    "wrong"

Now look at the thread where some people say they find overland too easy and would like more choice.
At least the spelling is difficult for you.
