You wouldn't want to immediately grow out of it, would you? Besides - if you're a level or so ahead of your quests, the higher-ranked rewards come in handy.
Now, what really doesn't make sense, is giving Heavy Armor to a wizard. They could stand to make different versions of these items.

Wizard? What's that?
How do people not understand that every class uses every armor type? The game has no way of knowing what your playstyle is, because you can use any armor and any weapon with any class. Your sorcerer can wear plate mail and wield a broadsword, and my nightblade can wear robes and wield a resto staff. There is no "right" armor or weapon.
Wizard/Mage/Sorcerer = Semantics. Chill out, dude.
Besides. My sparkly magic dude gets no armor perks from Heavy or Medium sets. I can wear those, and I'd be better off for it in terms of the damage I can take, but my spells would cost almost twice as much.

They aren't really semantics, since they're class names, and the class name says nothing about your playstyle.
Your sorcerer is primarily a caster. Mine swings a giant axe and occasionally turns into lightning. I benefit greatly from heavy/medium armor.
I'm willing to bet that most people who pick "Ooh! Magic!" are gonna not carry around an axe or sword. At least, outside of PVP. Casting hasn't really helped me much, there.

People who look at the sorcerer and go "Ooh! Magic!" are misunderstanding how classes work in this game. Every class has magic abilities, and every class can use any type of armor. I have a nightblade who uses dual-wield daggers and a bow, and I have a nightblade who uses exclusively resto/destruction staves. Both are equally viable builds in totally different ways.
