Need some help for PVP

So I am not new to PvP but I still am really bad. I mostly do battlegrounds since there is no cp advantage.
Right now I am using a magicka templar and I am going half support with heals, buffs, etc. and half damage with:
solar barrage, jabs, shards, beam, and vampires bane for my front bar and
Extended ritual, channeled focus, breath of life, toppling charge, and degeneration for my back bar
My gear is:
Mothers sorrow
Spell Strategist
Valkyn monster set

Thanks

Are my skills good or bad? Are my sets good or bad? I know that part of it is my own skill at rotation, speed, or whatever.

Just wanted some general advice on anything that could help me.

you have three damage sets listed...may want to switch one up to defense (transmutation or troll king maybe)...

I'd think about dropping solar barrage and toppling charge...purifying light and elemental blockade maybe...

what ultimate are you using, and what's giving your character trouble (staying alive, sustaining, or executing)?

Impenetrable trait - reduces critical damage. PvP gear is traditionally all impen.

    Impenetrable Trait

For new players all 7 armor pieces impenetrable is recommended.

without use of champion points (which can also be used to enhance your critical strike resistance) - it's super important to have at least 5 of your pieces have the impenetrable trait, which will give you around 1,400 or so crit resistance...still kind of low for pvp...

that means, you have to have the clockwork city DLC, transmutation stones (50 per piece), and the research knowledge to change traits on your gear - otherwise, you need a set of transmutation and will have to use some Heal over Time (HoT) abilities to proc that set..

fortunately the transmutation set is super cheap at guild traders..

    Robes of Transmutation
(2 items) Adds 129 Magicka Recovery
(3 items) Adds 129 Magicka Recovery
(4 items) Adds 833 Spell Critical
(5 items) When you heal yourself or an ally with a healing over time ability, grant them 1304 Critical Resistance for 20 seconds.

Personally, I would choose Julianos over Mother's sorrow if you're going for a crit buff because of the extra spell damage. I'm not really a follower of fotm builds so I've no idea what the current fashionable sets are but your sustain is going to pretty bad with those sets and a lot of your crit buff will be swallowed up in PvP.

If you get a light armour build wrong you'll be a paper target. Look at trying to cap your physical and spell resistance while you have rune active and get a balance between spell damage and sustain. I'd also put rune and breath of life on your melee bar and swap vampires bane and purifying light to the back bar.

Half/Half will generally net you Dead/Dead. Either be a healer/Tank, or be one that damages. This is just my observation from being in PvP for around 3+ years. Whether or not Impenetrable gear will help you, that is up to you to experiment with. Try it out, if you don't like it...change it up.

Whatever faction you'll be fighting with, they will/should give you some tips while you're in zone. Ride around with some groups and a few of them will update you on the latest ideas for gear setups.

Remember, Spell Strat is for single targets, so if you're in a group fight, you'll need focus and making sure you're not being targeted by others, which would negate the spell strat set. I've played with Spell Strat, like it, but it's VERY specific so you might try something that gives you a little increase in magicka and defense and crit, so I'd try Julianos...a solid set for any mag dmg dealer.

Biggest thing when you're in PvP...is figure out where you find yourself the most. In the front? In the middle? Or in the back rezzing your friends and healing. Once you know where you are at most of the time...begin your journey on getting sets that will match your play style.

And once again, your zone friends will be giving you some good advice on sets (as well as some commentary you know better to avoid I would assume) and the latest updates that affect them.

You said you weren't new to PvP, but I wanted to state this anyway.

yes it is, although with all the variables (most important being "Battle Spirit") you need a math degree to figure out to what extent you may need to get that extra resistance you may need from either your skills or gear...

being a templar you have access to channeled focus which grants you an extra 5,280 spell and physical resistance, if you were to also use combat prayer on your resto staff that would give you some extra resistance (1,320)...

if, instead of going all light on your templar, and using 5 light and 2 heavy instead - that would also add 730 or so spell and physical resistance...

the thing though with a templar is that you have such a good healing kit that instead of relying on mitigating damage with your resistances - you can make up for it with your healing...

what you have to watch out for though is someone "bursting" your down with their critical strikes (which is why crit resistance is so important)...

Yes, those are solid sets, if your goal is just beat vma.

Why would you run crit gear in pvp anyways. You want regens and max stats, something like lich, shackle, soulshine etc

    Spell Strategist
(2 items) Adds 1096 Maximum Magicka
(3 items) Adds 129 Spell Damage
(4 items) Adds 129 Spell Damage
(5 items) When you deal damage with a Light Attack, you place a mark over your target for 5 seconds, granting you 500 Spell Damage against your marked target. This effect can occur every 4 seconds.

    Mother's Sorrow
(2 items) Adds 1096 Maximum Magicka
(3 items) Adds 833 Spell Critical
(4 items) Adds 833 Spell Critical
(5 items) Adds 1924 Spell Critical

    Valkyn Skoria
(1 item) Adds 1206 Maximum Health
(2 items) When you deal damage with a damage over time effect, you have a 8% chance to summon a meteor that deals 9000 Flame Damage to the target and 4240 Flame Damage to all other enemies within 5 meters. This effect can occur once every 5 seconds.

there are a bunch of different sets which will provide different bonuses and pvp assistance...as a templar in battlegrounds you can really make life difficult for the other two teams (Deathmatch wise) if your focus really is on supporting healing teammates - you're own score may suck, but, your group mates will love you...

however, the sets you are using are all damage focused...

something like troll king (defensive monster set), julianos (damage increase), and, transmutation (defense and sustain) will help make things much simpler for you if you want to support:

    The Troll King
(1 item) Adds 4% Healing Done
(2 items) When you heal yourself or an ally, if they are still below 50% Health, their Health Recovery is increased by 1548 for 10 seconds.

    Law of Julianos
(2 items) Adds 833 Spell Critical
(3 items) Adds 1096 Maximum Magicka
(4 items) Adds 833 Spell Critical
(5 items) Adds 299 Spell Damage

    Robes of Transmutation
(2 items) Adds 129 Magicka Recovery
(3 items) Adds 129 Magicka Recovery
(4 items) Adds 833 Spell Critical
(5 items) When you heal yourself or an ally with a healing over time ability, grant them 1304 Critical Resistance for 20 seconds.

this is most definitely not the only way to play a magplar, or, the only sets that'll work, this is just very basic and easy to use stuff...

there was just a recent change to it, but, witchmother's potent brew:
    - Increase Max Magicka and Max Health by 3192 and Magicka Recovery by 319 for 2 hours. These effects are scaled based on your level. - i think these are the old numbers
    and, also the:
    ALLIANCE SPELL DRAUGHT
    Restore 238-6986 Magicka immediately.
Grants you Major Intellect which increases your Magicka Regeneration by 20% for 8-34.9 seconds.
Grants Major Sorcery which increases your Spell Damage by 20% for 8-34.9 seconds.

    will help a bunch...
