[Spoiler] How is Sai Sahan back?

Everyone is talking about the hype for the DLC and the new trailer and I am just thinking about how and why Sai Sahan is returning. At the end of the main quest of the base game
You get to choose either Lyris, Varen or Sai as a sacrifice - as Abnur conveniently needs to perform the ritual. It makes sense for Abnur to be in Elsweyr, but all the other characters are not certain to still be alive.
Of course if you don't play those quests in order of release, then everything works fine, but ZOS usually took the stance that you can play in whatever order you like and it would supposedly still make sense. So how will your player choice be addressed and will we potentially not see Sai Sahan again if we chose differently in the past?

You can't play in whatever order AND have it make sense. The AD storyline is the prime example.

I assume that the new timeline id you want everything to make sense is:
    1. Start Main Quest up to rescuing Abnur Tharn and Sai Sahan
    2. DC questline up to Alikr Desert, then Wrathstone Dungeons
    3. Elsweyr Prologue
    4. Elsweyr
    5. Finish up Main Quest

Have not been to Elsweyr yet. So if it takes place prior to end of main quest does it have dolmens?
"Never go in, miss. Never say a prayer at its door. If you are angry, do not seek revenge by the Laughing Maiden Stone, or at the threshold of the Tombs. There be those who listen for oaths and vows...What may be said in innocence and ire becomes flesh and blood in such places."

Considering that the anniversary event hyped up the major players of the main quest, perhaps Sai is replaced by Lyris if you sacrificed Sai.

Lyris doesn't have a celebrity voice actor and isn't canonically dead like the Prophet, so it's possible she could return.

Upon meeting Sai Sahan in Dragonhold:
if you did not sacrifice Sai Sahan in main quest then:
"Wow, Sai! Glad I did not sacrifice you at end of planemeld!"
        "You and I both, vestige!"
else if you sacrificed Sai Sahan in main quest line:
        "Whoa, Sai! Aren't you dead?"
"No, vestige. It was an illusion created by Meridia!"
    else:
"Sai who? What is a main quest?"

That order doesn't make sense either. Elsweyr must be set after the main quest. At the elsweyr proloque quest you get to talk with Abnur that it has been a while since the last contact between him and the vestige (referring to the entire plane meld scenario.) After the main quest he flees to the imperial city with the broken amulet of kings that he stole. Most likely he used the time that had passed since then, to figure out his plan to end the three banners war.

In the main quest Abnur used to be one egoistic prick, in Elsweyr he has suddenly turned into an altruistic hero who wants to stop all the pointless killing. And let's not forget his new shiny armor. All of this suggests that he had some character development since the events of the main quest.

There is no order. Tuttle confirmed that everything that has happened, somehow including Orsinium which has dates in books placing it in 583, as happening in 582. Every Chapter, every DLC, every Dungeon Pack has occurred in 582 and its all up to the players choice of what content they decide to do in what order they decide.

So there is no canonical order and there is no sense arguing over how all of this plays out because for ZOS. All that matters is that when they want to hype something up they can throw some nostalgia or favorite character at us and we will jump on it.

Oh, I quite agree. That's just the closest we can get to an order that makes sense.

I chose Sai since imo, he was the least interesting character the devs had created for the main-story, more of the same with Lyris, Manimarco and Molag Bal.

If it was an option, I'd rather have picked Abnur, but they weren't on the list.

But don't you kind of have his soul trapped? I'm not sure how that ritual actually worked, but I'd imagine you can't revive someone whose soul is still in use. You can obviously raise their bodies but not bring them back for real, if that's even possible at all.

Have not been to Elsweyr yet. So if it takes place prior to end of main quest does it have dolmens?

Nope. No new zones have dolmens, only the zones present at launch. That storyline ends the need for dolmens. Vvardenfell doesn't actually even have a substitute for them. Summerset has geysers & Elsweyr has dragons.

It would be interesting if Akatosh nullified the terms of the Amulet of Kings sacrifice due to Abnur's persistent recklessness.
And who better to be champions for the Dragon God of Time than the people screwed over by the guy who just released dragons. So there's a possibility that Sai and Lyris are both ultimately spared from their fateful realities in exchange for service in this reality.

Even if their isn't a canonical order, there is a far more interesting and coherent storytelling order.

Only good thing about sai was his outfit. I was more disappointed that I couldn’t sacrifice ALL of them. They were more irritating than the followers in this Fallout 3 mod I played. I wanted to kill them ALL before the quests ended.

Best I could do here was skip their dialogue. I STILL don’t know what really happened in the main quest. And I ain’t doing Caldwell’s NOTHING...for a bucket hat! What!!!!
