I tried it, though admittedly not going all the way. It crits for roughly 20k on players in my experience, but you should be able to boost that higher. Personally I found it boring after fighting a few matches using it.
If you build for the Onslaught gank you will 1-shot potatoes, 2-shot decent players, and not kill the PvP meta brigade at all since they will survive the gank then turn the tables and in a prolonged fight you are doomed. Also, the mere 800 or so stamina recovery means you have a lot of downtime even with meditate.
I'm currently using Onslaught but with Spriggan & Bone Pirate. Snipe into critical rush into Onslaught takes care of most non-tanky players. But the decent stamina recovery and armor penetration means I'm also useful after the burst opener.

I have to open with a bow attack to trigger bezerkers enchantment and from stealth for camo hunter bezerk. Then ambush give vunerability now so you are getting more damage than before.
In battlegrounds i slot siphoning strikes for more sustain but thete is plenty of down time in cryo.
Spriggans is terrible because onslaught ignores resists. I sometimes like to snipe zergs so i went with SotA over sword singer.

Have people forgotten about Balorgh/Automaton's/Sword-Singer?
It's a gank that usually works in a global cool down so you have more time to get away from the 5+ people who'll chase you.

I tried that combo but with Slimecraw instead of Balorgh today for laughs, well it turned out my 'victims' had the last laugh. I don't know what people are wearing these days, but with a 16k non-crit tooltip (no-CP) I was critting(!) templars from the PvP meta brigade from stealth for *drumroll* 12k damage. I don't know how because I had +70% total crit damage on that build.

16k tooltip, means 8k base, meaning with crit, additional 5.6k, so 13.6k potential. If they take 12k they only mitigated 1.6k... or about 8% - so probably just minor protection.
You need Bal. In medium Armor, at full ult, you're looking at an additional 1,350 weapon damage. That's gonna dwarf the 8% from slimecraw

I'm talking about the tooltip in the battleground, so damage is already reduced in the tooltip. I've hit other players with the exact tooltip damage of 16k

I'm talking about the tooltip in the battleground, so damage is already reduced. I've hit other players with the exact tooltip damage of 16.4k. 8k base damage would be pathetic for an Ultimate, my surprise attack almost hits that hard.
I always assumed Bal only buffed weapon damage up to the cost of the ultimate, not the total ultimate consumed. If its the ultimate consumed that does make the set more interesting. On the other hand one does not constantly run around Onslaughting people with 500 ultimate stored unfortunately.
