Why do dye colors look terrible on outfits?

I've been trying to dye an outfit for my character, and it seems that almost every color I use just gives the outfit a grey look, especially the dark shades. It would be nice to have an outfit in a deep shade of blue or red or black instead of having a faded, pale, grey-like shade. This is ridiculous.

There are several dyes that got a good blue or red colour. But they are usually uncommon or rare quality. Black is fewer but there are still a few.
Something that is worth to mention is that different styles and materials dye differently. Some better, some worse. For example: Armour pieces that is supposed to look like leather dyes worse than the ones that is cloth.

This is very true - the gold dyes, like Hunding's Gold look awesome on metal - but they appear as dark brown on cloth or leather.

I also find the more rarer dyes to be the betters ones, like the blue from master smithing or vivec's champion, purple from master clothier, green from toxicologist etc

I'm also aware that they may not be the exact names, I misremember.

Reasons why I like the colors from the Deconstructed / Crafting / early achievements; More realistic, weathered / worn / dirty look - IMHO, fits to near perfection on vast majority of outfits and costumes.

Plus, personally can't stand many of the bright colors, are often matte and flat and shiniest of shiny colors, often clash with most other colors, unless you mix with blacks or dark blues / purple hues.

Can we just have the ability to bleach the original color on everything, so we can apply color properly and not mix with the original color of the item.

I had this issue with the Sentinel Vest and Salvar costume. Nothing I put on it did anything but look dirty grey, sometimes darker sometimes lighter. This is on my second account which doesn't have as many dyes unlocked as my first one, so fairly limited.

Then I realized that the drop from the gold necklaces was green not cyan like so many are, and went with two greens and birch white. Lovely! Not in game so don't know what the greens are named at the moment - one's fairly dark, the other somewhat lighter, more a medium depth of tone. They're both on the "blue" side of green.

It's a pity that most of the uncommon and rare dyes are ultra glossy. Making a lot of armour that is not metal look plastic or made of cheap polyester satin.

True. Nirncrux Red.... I was hoping for a slightly rusty red brown. Nope. Not even close. Shiny polyester, got it in one!

Can you post a screenshot of which set you're trying to dye, @GhostOfAnEra?

There are very few gear sets that have innate issues of finding ANY kind of dye to work.

One of those notable styles that does have issues is the Glass motif, for example.

Of course, an issue many players have is that not enough dyes are unlocked ... though I'm happy to be proven wrong in this specific case.

The Viridian Venom dye is one few very dark green dyes that is in a warm tone. But of course it's also super shiny and does so it looks like you wear a latex suit.

different styles favors different dyes more than others, some look good, some look bad. it is all about experimenting and seeing which colors favor the outfit you are using.

It's the "Holiday in Balmora" outfit. One of them out of various costumes I have, anyway. The dyes I have give the outfit a grey color, unless it's a real bright color. I'll post a screenshot later.

Most dyes are specifically intended to be used on specific material - eg metal, wood or cloth snd can look weird on other. Google for mmo fashion and eso dyes....they display all colors on different material

That costume is known to dye poorly. Like its made of some odd velvet-like material.

I assure you, most costumes and outfit armors in game take dyes much better than the Holiday in Balmora costume does. That particular costume has some unique dye problems IMO.

As others have said, I think there's some property of the *materials* you're trying to dye that lead to awkward and/or ugly results. Light armour dyes terribly, the result is often a stretch from the colour as presented.

But hey, why bother when you can get your Clown Costumes pre-dyed to look better than what you could ever possibly achieve in-game?

I find them overrrated and am dumbfounded that people will actually PAY for them - same with other styles (that cost you money to change to when you already KNOW them). Stupid things, imho.
