How on Earth do people play this game with mouse and keyboard? (Help requested)

Gaming mouse is definitely the way to go. I use keys 6-12 instead of 1-6 because they are at the back closer to my thumbs natural position. And backwards at that, 12 is 1, 11 is 2 so on.

It takes a lot of getting used to (basically learning a new skill) But in my opinion the effort to learn is worth the reward.

Yeah. It's like, I can move around just fine.

But as soon as you add casting into the mix... Dead. LOL.

And that's all because I can't avoid AoE whilst casting, or cast heal when moving.

I just can't get my left fingers to do both at the same time.

Conversely, the binding I do have on my mouse, weapon swap, I can use no problems, as the thumb is otherwise free.

I think it's settled. Once I'm able to, probably early June, I will get a gaming mouse with a large number of buttons. I very much believe that being able to dedicate my left fingers to WASD only will transform the game for me.

My best advice if you are considering a gaming mouse is to try find a store where you can actually hold them and check the way the different makes fit your hand.

I thought all my problems would be solved with a 12 button(on the side) mouse, the only research I did was to check out the market leaders at that time. I had no idea that there was any real variance in size and shape. Consequently I ended up with a really nice all singing, all dancing mouse which I ABSOLUTELY hated!! I found the 12 buttons impossible to use, they were just too small and too close together.

I gave that mouse to my son and brought one with 4 side buttons, which I love, so as I said, try before you buy if you can! :)

I had been used to using the mouse for movement and the keyboard for abilities so I changed my keybindings and it's all good. If you have the original keybindings try swapping them around and see if it's better for you.

My mouse has 4 buttons + wheel (which can act as 5th button + wheel up and wheel down), on it I have the normal actions and then I have assigned bar swap and interupt for the extra mouse buttons. These are actions I perform with my right hand.

Now to the keyboard, which I use with my left hand only as I'm playing. My keyboard is a QWERTY setup (with Å, Ö, Ä, so a scandinavic?). I use WASD for movement and 1-5 for skills, 6 for ultimate and Q for consumables. (space is for jump, CTRL for crouch, E for interact, shift for run) Usually I use my middle finger for pressing W and S and others can dance around, when moving left I press A with my little finger so other fingers can press skills and for moving right I press D with my thumb.

even though you apparently don't want to use a gamepad, i highly recommend giving it another try. i personally love the dualshock 4 and found it to be quite durable. i don't know how you treat your controllers, but i haven't noticed any wear and tear on mine..

i switched half a year ago and haven't looked back. it's just so much more comfortable and also feels more intuitive to me. at least for combat and movement.
i still use keyboard and mouse for chat, inventory and guild windows etc. also addon keybinds are convenient as an addition.

having a keybind to quickly switch in and out of gamepad mode makes it all a breeze.
the only downside imo is that most addons lack gamepad support, but that can be worked around by switching, so...

I come from playing mmos with a regular 3 button mouse and hot bars that consist of 25+ hot keys. I cant help you in anyway other than to tell you it takes practice and ESO by comparison is childs play in this department.

As a low-reflexes person myself, I use a Naga HEX mouse for moving (other than W for forward since ESO demands the LMB/RMB be for combat). Just use three thumb buttons for strafe left, right, and backwards, and if you have to move forward and don't have a gap closer skill, hit W. Then you can one-finger hit all your skills without being stuck in place, it's just hard to cast while moving forward. (For me -- I share your lack of skill).

I originally got the HEX to play GW2 which requires even more mobility. I've never been able to WASD while also hitting skills, my left hand just isn't large or dexterous enough. I don't do combo keys if I can avoid it. And the HEX has made the game playable for me, so I recommend it for your consideration.

As someone who used to ask the same question and play exclusively with an Xbox controller or not at all. The best thing I did was invest in an MMO mouse, I have the Razer Naga, but try out the different types to see what you find more comfortable. Then I forced myself to play with keyboard and mouse or not at all.

Eventually, you just get the hang of it and it doesn't even take that long. The trick is to not give up. Don't worry about getting your butt handed to you either it's bound to happen at first. Run around overland without reverting back to the controller. I know its difficult at first but you'll get the hang of it.

Now that I've gotten used to it, I can't fathom how I ever played this game with a controller and refuse to go back.

This is my setup. Not saying it is the best, just that it works. It has gone through a few changes, especially since my gaming mouse broke:

    Movement: WASD

    Skills: Alt, Space, E, R, F,

Roll Dodge: Shift (gamechanger in PvP / vMA)

Crouch on mouse back arrow sidebutton (20$ mouse, does the trick though).

Interrupt: Ctrl (not sure how it will work out, recent change. I still bash violently when I try to sneak in TG heists...)

I don´t use weapon switch anymore (hint). It is too laggy. Instead I have C and V for bar 1 and < and Z for bar 2 (2 keys each in case I am slipping). That way I can spam the key in a laggy environment and not worry about switching bar and then switching back unintentionally. This works well for me.

Interact with object on 1, Automove on 2, interact with player on 3, jump on 4 (can´t bunnyhop but running out of keys and I don´t want to anyway), sprint on 5 (you don´t sprint in combat usually so this can be a bit out of the way).

Various stuff like banker, hide / show hp bars and nameplates on 6-9. Horse addon on F1 (finally installed it)

Pets on G but haven´t used it.

    Sheathe on '-'

    Walk on Ö

You get the picture.. it´s all over the place apart from combat keys where I don´t move my hand much. But I don´t have to move my left hand much and once you get used to it ESO is a great combat game IMO.

Just rebind the keys to something that feels more natural for you. I have never ever used WASD to move in any game ever.

For me it feels more natural to use the cursor keys to move and i switched my other keybinds to keys in that area.
    But then again, i'm left-handed ...

    My key-binds are:

Forward: (Physical) Left Mouse button (mapped to logical right button because left-handed mouse)
Attack: (Physical) Right Mouse button (mapped to logical left button because left-handed mouse)
    Back: Down Arrow
    Strafe Left: Left Arrow
    Strafe Right: Right Arrow
    Jump: Up Arrow
    Sprint: Num-0
    Crouch: CTRL
    Interrupt: Right Shift
    Skills 1-5: Backslash | Delete | End | Page Down | Num-4
Ultimate: Home | Key on Naga Keypad
    Block: Key on Naga Keypad
    Quickslot: Backspace
    Interact: Enter
    Weapon Swap: Mouse Wheel Up
    Synergy: Mouse Wheel Down

As other said, gaming mouse, the 12 button ones help a lot.

If you have stiff thumb like me, I'd recommend only using the side buttons (1,3,4,6,7,9,10,12) and none of middle ones to make it easier to navigate the buttons.

You guys have it easy. Back in the early PC days I played ESO on a non-gaming laptop with just a track pad. No mouse.

Eventually ESO fried my CPU and onto console I went.

I remapped my ultimate to 6-KEY.
i remapped my C-KEY to O-KEY to stop opening the character screen when trying activate synergies
    I remapped bar-swap to V-KEY

I unbound the '-KEY as I never want to go to the Crown Store, even during a fight. Surprise.

My idea of rotation is playing the 1-5 keys like a piano and alternately pressing the mouse buttons.
Thanks to 450ms response time, this often works.

Sorry I don't have more constructive feedback, but I also use a gamepad and find it pretty much the same once you get weaving down. I similarly struggle with combat using m+key, but gamepad works fine in most cases!

Well, like I suggest in my OP, I don't have a problem with a gamepad per se, but they don't last very long.

My beef with gamepads isn't a gameplay issue. In that regard they're great.

But they break so easily, and they're only getting more expensive with each console generation. I can't keep up with replacements, which is why I'm so keen to find a more worthwhile solution that will last.

I don't want to say you are wrong, but how do they break easily? I have been using my Xbox Elite controller since it came out. My daughter is still using her controller she bought. My son on the other hand, well, he is just careless, and "rages" when he plays. Thank god he can buy his own controllers now.

So unless you are a rager, I can't see how Xbox controllers don't last long. Again, not saying you are wrong, just don't understand.

That said, I am like you. I can't for the life of me use the mouse and keyboard. Even worse, I am a lefty and mouse and keyboard is made for right handed people. I tried, but as others said, and I did make a post on this, it's practice, practice, practice and more practice.

I tried rebinding the keys to my liking and still not working for me. I guess what I really need to do is start a new character and then practice with mouse and keyboard. This way my CP 160 character doesn't keep dying and to fix the armour is not so expensive. :p

What I tried to do, as a lefty is use the arrow keys to move and the buttons above it for my spells, or use the keypad and have some skills in the 7,8,9, slot and what else is around it. My problem I have is trying to jump at the same time.

Again, it's practice. Needing to teach your mind, hands, fingers, thumbs to do something new. I went back to my controller, since the game became more frustrating. For me a game is to be fun. So I went back to what is fun for me. So for me, mouse and keyboard is not superior to a controller.

So it's like trying to play piano, guitar or what ever. You need to keep practicing, all the time. If not, like me, I can't use mouse and keyboard and can't play guitar. :)

So true. For me as I said above, it's worse for me since I am a lefty. So best mouse I could find for me was the Logitech G 900 wireless gaming mouse. It has 11 buttons that can be used. (Not sure if it's 22, but it seems more complicated if true.)

The side buttons took me a while to get use to. I guess I have fat fingers, and I keep hitting the sides of them when I don't want to.

If you are having problems with a keyboard, you like me, might have problems with a gaming mouse as well. So make sure the gaming mouse you have, fits comfortably in your hand.

    I use a Logitech G502 mouse (7 buttons)
The various buttons are keyed to movement, looting, mounting up, going stealth, weapon swapping.

I use my keyboard for combat..3 fingers on 2,3,4 and reach for 1, 5, Q, R and my thumb is dedicated to spacebar.

I use a razer naga 12 button mouse.

Question to folks: does anyone find that the input lag from the side buttons on these gaming mice is slightly longer than pressing keyboard keys? I just feel like weaving Left Mouse, 1 on the keyboard works alot better and more consistently than Left-Mouse, 1 on the mouse.

I'm old so maybe its just me.

I usually rebind most, if not almost all of my combat keys. Stuff like character, synergy, sheathe weapons and all I put it at the numbers. Don't usually use it so why should I put it at easy to reach buttons.

Things like z, x and c, I use the abilities. You have the two buttons on your mouse right? Use that as your spammables or perhaps the most used two abilities. Things like f, r or v, I use for ultimates, synergy usage and weapon swap . I even use the mouse roll up as dodge.

Experiment around with bindings. The only problem is that you need to do it for each and every character you start or have. It's better to be prepared imo.

Skills on mouse buttons is unprecise, feels strange and delayed and will make you fire the wrong spell very often.
Just put your modifier keys (ctrl, shift etc) to mouse and double/triple your reachable keyboard buttons.

I'll also never understand how people use controllers. Using controller knobs to change where I'm facing was so hard its the main reason I switched to PC. It doesn't help its one of the two RPGs I played on console. FIFA is now the only reason I own a console.

and I use the bottom left of my left hands palm to hit ctrl so i can crouch
    and my keyboard is angled.

Just out of curiosity, what sort of keyboard do you have? Mine is ergonomic and I'm pretty sure if it wasn't (carpal tunnel issues aside) I would probably have difficulty with skills and movement because I rest my left wrist right on the pad at the bottom so everything is always in reach. If it was a flat-edged one I am not sure what I'd do, and laptop keyboards are ridiculous. So it might be your keyboard with your particular style of movement.

To me, using a controller is like wizardry, so... :D Never could figure out how to play that way.

I'm not really a keyboard guru either-- I'm an interface clicker by nature. So, I one-bar everything, move the weapon swap out of the way (#6) so I don't hit it by accident and move consumables to TAB so I don't use them by mistake when I'm flailing away like a fool.

I'm pretty sure this is totalky unhelpful to everyone, but...yeah :D

Before we begin, allow me to state that the only person who is lacking in skills is myself.

I've been playing on PC near everyday since halfway through January, and I always make some time to try and practice with mouse and keyboard input.

    I cannot do it.

Every time I attempt to enter a fight with an NPC, I find my character paralysed as I cannot cast skills whilst moving, or I cannot move whilst casting.

How on Earth do I make it possible for me to do both at the same time? At this point I'm begging. A gamepad is a decent stop-gap solution but they fail rather quickly under intense use. Especially the sticks.

I am desperate to find a way to play this game with mouse and keyboard, but thus far, I can't do anything with it.

Does anyone have suggestions for custom bindings? I currently have my controls more or less set to default. As a result, it seems, I can't move and cast at the same time, because my five left digits just can't reach casting keys and movement keys at the same time.

Has anyone got any advice? I'm at a complete loss.

I have my Ultimate and "Action/Use" keys bound to buttons on my Trackball as well as the Autorun which is bound to my scrollwheel button.
