Can I earn skill points from the main quest lines in the starter areas or do those just give experience?

If you mean the tutorial islands, Khenarthi's Roost, Bleakrock Island and Bal Foyen, and Stros M'kai and Betnikh, no, none of those quests give skill points. Enough skyshards for a skill point (2 for Khenarthi's Roost since it's one big island instead of 2) each.

And none of the skyshards are in delves, so you just go there and pick them up. No combat required, if you pick your route appropriately.

With the exception of one on Bleakrock Isle that requires you to pick up a quest to enter a cave. Must wear a disguise to be "let in" to the cave.

There is however an extra skill point quest in Daggerfall, besides the three you'd normally expect in Glenumbra. The first quest giver is a barking dog. He'll find you if you're in the area near the bank and most of the crafting stations.

This is what I meant. I don't know that they are tutorial areas, since those short ones do give a skill point each. (Summerset has 1 I recall and the Main one has 1 plus a skyshard, though I am not sure if that skyshard adds to your total now that I think about it.

Here's the thing about the Summerset tutorial and the previous Morrowind tutorial. You got a skill point upon completing that tutorial areas quest. But if you got Summerset or had a character made before Morrowind you did not get that skill point. Same with Summerset; by completing the tutorial for Summerset you get awarded a skill point, but older characters made before Summerset will not get it. So with Elsweyr coming and a new tutorial with it, we get a skill point for completing it with a new character but previously made characters do not. So thats 3 skill points older characters will not have.

This has been something a lot of people have complained about, missing skill points despite there being more in the game than we could ever possibly spend all at once.

Now, the main games original tutorial area, the wailing prison, is interestingly still needed in order to begin the vanilla main quest and you still get the skill point for completing it. Making new tutorials with each chapter and locking old characters out of it and the skill point it gives seems weird and funny, but ultimately doesn't hurt anything as far as I'm concerned.

Missing the skill points is annoying. I still need a few more on my main, mostly because I also craft. I have to run through quest lines to get them now. That takes longer than even skyshards since they only happen every so often.

I do plan on finishing the quest achievement on this character though, so it wouldn't be a problem overall. It will be annoying as I try to push up crafting on other characters though. (Not that I need that, but I am a bit of an altoholic and completionist, so I will do that over time.)

So my question is - If I skip the summerset tutorial and am dropped right in on summerset at level 3, have I lost out on a skill point?
