Mechanics you don't like

What are some dungeon/trial mechanics you don't like and find to be just plain annoying?

I hate the poison spit from the dragon statues in Scalecaller Peak final boss fight. It's usually the biggest reason for a wipe in my experience and it's just a random one-hit mechanic. Last time I was there as a tank, I slotted Retreating Maneuver and kept a 100% uptime so the group can avoid it faster. It worked but I still hate the mechanic.

    Animation canseling.
I dont say i`m not good at it, just dont like it.
Give a OK player a class with BiS gear and give crap gear/same class to player good at animation canseling.
Guess what. The crap geared one win on dpc racing....
This mechanic is the main reason why we have such big dps gap.15k casuals and 50k+ players who are good at AC
ZoS need to disable this. Or atleast to reduce animation on all skills.

Overused mechanic. Overchargers in vSO and vAA. iirc, they were not in both until Zos reworked them to scale to our level. Yes, I know how to deal with them but it is just copy and paste designs. I am undecided on the new trial's use of portals. It sort of reminds me of vCR and vSO Mantikora.

Animation canceling does not account for 70% of a players dps for any player. The reason for a 15k dps player having such low dps is just plain skill/build or something else. If there were no animation canceling the strong player would still be doing several times more dps than the example of a player doing 15k. The statement above is not even close to correct.

I want mechanics that are challenging, coherent and recognisable.

So a reasonable player should be able to go into a dungeon without having to have watched a video and work out how each boss fight functions. Sure they’ll die while they are learning it, but that will be because they haven’t ‘solved’ it and are working it out.

I like Symphony of Blades in DoM because while it’s complicated and there’s a lot going on, the challenge not understanding what needs to be done, but actually being able to do it.

    What I don’t want is

Lazy one-shots (not big, clever or intelligent design)
Incomprehensible, untelegraphed mechanics - like what is going on with King Whatsisface in DoM?
Anything that allows you to skip the mechanics by simply burning down the boss. DPS shouldn’t be a get out of jail free card.
    Lazy, uninformative death recaps
    Lazy inexplicable debuffs
    Random, untelegraphed death shots

But above all, I hate the fact that the normal versions of dungeons don’t have many of the mechanics at all, so it’s impossible to learn them without jumping into the vet dungeons, where 2 weeks after release everyone is magically expected to ‘know’ how to do everything.

    That.
Cheap, unimaginative mechanic to simulate challenge. Seen them used in latest Everquest II raids as well, sole purpose being 1. either too little dps, or
    2. too strong dps at once with killing so quickly that content became trivial. Devs wanted people "to experience" all parts of content so they punished players for using what the game was giving them, by making bosses "enrage" and wipe the raid.

Sole reason I avoid doing DLC dungeons in PUGs, unless it's with group of friends who work together.

Fairly sure I read somewhere that next patch, most animation times are drastically reduced. Could have heard wrong.

If true, the value of animation cancelling will be reduced. You are wrong however regarding the 15k dps / 50k dps disparity.

You are suggesting animation canceling multiplies dps by a factor greater than 3 and factually speaking it does not. It just does not work anything like that.

Any player that can pull 50k+ dps can go without any sort of animation canceling including not doing any weaving of basic attacks and will embarrass that player that can only do 15k dps. You will not find much support for your claims because they are so far from the truth. Anyone who can pull 50k dps, or even remotely close to it, understands what I am saying.

Then i`m a exeption. You sound like the guy with 20k heavy attack post. Animation canseling multiply dps atlest 2 times and everyone who say oposite is a liar. There are video from a guy who pull 100k / from curent pts/ and he clearly show the diference animation canseling make. Its a cancer for both pvp and pve.

I dont care about engame, or about runing dungeons with premade grp. Then everything is ok.
But when you run with randoms who dont want to bother wit AC and just do their rotatiom the time you need to kill the boss is 3 times slower /and with randoms i dont mean players doing light attacks or spaming one skill/
Cuting animation timer wont hurt endgamers or top performance pvpers anyway. Will just lift casual level skillcap alittle. And make random grping less stresfull.
So as you see, there is nothing to wory about.

I'm definitely not a big fan of shade mechanic in vCR. Fights in trials are already fairly unrecoverable but this rez denying just takes it to the next level. You might as well just wipe if 3-4 people have died. Forcing players to go for nearly no-deaths just to clear is a bit excessive in my opinion.

Another thing on the annoying side is how trigger happy ZOS is with potent bleeds on tanks lately. I know, I can thank "make healers relevant again" brigade for this one but I think there were better ways to achieve that than slap a massive bleed on every boss.

Eh...just for fun, I'd love to see what a high parser would hit without animation canceling....just to see what those numbers would look like and the difference between the two. I think the drop off would be suprising.

Just a regular build, with no cheesing the test, like putting a ton of fighter guild skills in the bar to up weapon damage.

It would be an interesting experiment.

DPS Check mechanics. I read the Developer thoughts with a rude Scottish accent:

"Ooooooooh!? Ye wanna do this dungeon but ye don't have high DPS? Well sod off laddie-boy, ye not welcome here!"
It really is just that. A method of telling players to *** off until they're "Better" at dealing damage. And these come in a variety of flavors, be it continuous add spawning, mobs that need to be killed in X amount of time or everyone dies, or a very common one: Kill the boss very fast, or it'll kill you all because you took too long.

Or how about the one-shot mechanics? "Ooooooh, ye didn't get outta the way of an attack in time? Well there be one answer to that, wee laddie-boy! *kills you*"

None of these mechanics are exactly fun, or prove to be a "Challenge". Sure you can put in mechanics that punish sloppiness, but don't make it a mechanic that could potentially make someone lose their mind, because of unforeseen circumstances

Was doing Falkreath Hold. Run was going very good, but the last boss had mechanics overlapping each other and everyone was confused, and i didn't notice the shout coming and I died. I nearly went in to tears knowing that I messed up a no-death run due to mechanic nonsense.

In B-Four someone comes in and defends DPS checks with the obligatory "Dungeon Runs shouldn't last forever and should have some barriers": *** off with that noise, it's none of YOUR or the developer's business how long a group takes to finish a dungeon. If you wanna punish a group for taking too long, then you've made a very poorly designed dungeon. Simple as that.

The Mareo Brothers are two Mechanics I don't like.
FYI - There is no such thing as 'night capping' in a world wide MMO.
FYI - There was no paid Beta. When they launched the game the Beta was over, even if you don't think it was.
    FYI - It's B2P not F2P. There is a difference.
FYI - It doesn't take any player skill to mash keys or buttons in this game. The ones that stay alive longer have the better internet connection and speed.
FYI - The game is not broken, it still works. It just has 'bugs' that need to be fixed.
    Balance is a "Bad" thing.

Example: There were hundreds of Jedi and only two Sith in Star Wars. The Jedi wanted, "Balance in the Force" and they got it. Now there are only two Jedi and two Sith.

    Balance is a "Bad" thing.

Maybe he hates plumbers, you know? They can be pretty terrible, jumping on turtles and weird mushroom creatures, or alternatively throw a dirty grime-encrusted plunger to a random well-dressed Japanese man for him to use on your face.

All perfectly valid reasons to hate plumbers. Ever thought of that?

One shots - way to make my healer feel worthless.
Ignoring taunts - way to make my tank feel worthless.
DPS checks - way to make my healer and tank both feel worthless and to encourage ignoring mechanics.
Red cones that give you .0001 milliseconds to react (impossible to react before it goes off).
Red cone where you get plenty of warning, waste 2 seconds with no dps holding up block, and still get knocked on your butt.
Special attacks that have zero clues, tells, warnings.

There are a load of mechanics that just infuriate me because so often I end up concluding the best course of action is to totally ignore the mechanic and just burn through it.

Honestly, I keep a list of dungeons where I encounter stupid/irritating mechanics and I do not repeat those dungeons. Unfortunately, the list is rather long. . . .
