My journey to 40k dps - Stam DK

Story of me and my stam DK.

What a game this is. After around 3,5 years i guess its more than a hobby. I started out as a tank and after noticing how slow questing was due to my dps, i started to measure damage it in order to improve. I remember one of the first times i got around to a training dummy i did 1,5k dps with my tank spec. My goal was to get to around 5. I started using abilities in an order and after a while i was doing 10k dps, took me some time to get there though. I liked the fast paced style of DPSing and turned my main (and only) character into DPS. After a lot of practise and reading i eventually managed to do 12k dps. While in dungeons i came across exeptional players that did 20k , i heard rumors that 30k was achievable!

I envied the players that did top dps and desperate to improve i came to this forums, where you guys tought me about rotation and tips about gear. I started the LONG and slow journey towards getting the Maelstrom Bow, which itself took me from 13k to 25k dps after a LOT of practising. I was dead stuck at 25k DPS for a long while. Again, i came to forums and asked for you help. You tought me where to get the right gear, and the right traits and food. Journey from 30k to 40k however took me about 1 year. Only 2 days ago i was 100% sure i was NOT going to be able to achieve 40k. I watched countless videos and knew exactly what gear and traits i should use but i was STUCK at 33-35k.

The other day though, i started getting into interface and setting it up in a way that let me have a better oversight over my buffs. I spent some time setting up srendar and managed to set up tracking of RELEQUEN. As it turned out, i never managed to get to 20 stacks and my damage output reflected that. I did 2 hours on a test dummy today and after a FANTASTIC phonecall from my mother ( she finally got her own apartament! This is huge ) i felt a RUSH of positive energy and i sat down being like "YOU CAN DO THIS". Ladies and gentlemen, and i did. It was amazing.... I did 40k dps - purely self buffed. I rejoyced and this has been a LONG TERM goal of mine besides the flawless conqueror which i got the other day ( took me 2 years ). I have never felt such incredible sense of achievement in any game in my life. Thank you for helping me along the way guys! I guess 45k dps is next stop but i have no idea atm how im gonna achieve that lol! :D

Today I hit 42k DPS for the first time. Think about the kind of journey I had trying to reach these numbers on console 😉

    Good job nonetheless mate

Seems kinda rude to say, though IDK that you meant it that way. FWIW OP, I play with a controller on PC (switched the interface to gamepad mode) and have also recently hit 42k... I guess I have no KM experience to compare it to but I don't think I've struggled more than my KM counterpart guildies to hit that number- what it comes down to is who is willing to consistently sit in front of the dummy and work on things. Who knows, maybe I'd be hitting 45k at this point on KM.

Though yeah, I do have access to combat addons on PC even with controller mode, so maybe that's part of it.

I just don't want to detract from OP's sense of accomplishment!

Well done! Wish I could dps like a pro but I can burst 50k+ for about 5 seconds...does that count? 😂😂

sucks that gap between bis sets and regular sets is so big.

my off chars can't reach 30k dps with regular sets like julianos, hundings, or such. I'm not farming that relequen bullshift.

Sure there is a difference between "regular" and bis sets, but 45k+ with any semi-sane set up is doable.

This is so funny! I just hit my new record of 41k on my stamwarden today lol. But I feel you, the road to 40k seemed so unachievable when I started. Can’t believe I’m here now.

that's just being lazy my man. Relequens is super easy to get, there are lots of groups running normal cloudrest every single day, you could get a full set in no time at all.

i know all the "pro guides" *cough alcast *cough* say you should get the perfect version, but it isn't necessary, not unless you really want every ounce of dps you can squeeze from it, but the difference between normal and perfected is negligible at best.

if you don't feel like running CR on veteran just run it on normal and improve the gear to purple/gold yourself.

. I'm not farming that relequen bullshift.

As a stamblade, Relequen is a requirement for the highest single-target DPS, at least for me. I can get good numbers by pairing Rele with quite a few sets (Spriggan's, Twice-Fanged, Advancing Yokeda [though I have trouble with the uptime so I don't use it], Deadly Strike, Briarheart, etc, three of which are overland/easily-obtainable sets. I've tried sets other than Rele paired with the above, or combinations of the above, but Rele reigns supreme.

This is off-topic, but I seriously recommend grinding for Rele. You can skip the other trials sets commonly used by stam DPS builds (TFS/AY/VO/War Machine) and do well. I think grinding one set is more reasonable than having to deal with HRC and SO to get those coveted and damned daggers...

Yep- nCR + 0 is quick and easy with any reasonable pug... I've pugged it many a time and can't remember ever having an issue with nCR + 0, actually, though +2 and +3 is a different story...

In that case, I think the issue is technique rather than gear. My stamsorc (the class at the bottom of the food chain with regards to stam dps imo) runs very "average" gear but I still manage to hit 36k self buffed very easily - stormfist + briarheart + nightmothers gaze (for solo/self buffed), otherwise houndings rage. Once I get relequen instead if hundings i will easily hit 40k+. With houndings and nightmothers you could easily hit 30k+

Light attack weave and rotation is everything.

Gratz mate, well done. I'm chasing that too, started back in the game a couple of months ago and pulled a horrible 5K on the dummy. Now I'm at 28K and don't yet have a full Rele set or Maelstrom bow, so I'm sure to get there soon enough. Your CMX looks identical to mine only with bigger numbers LOL!

There are also people who dont want to ride the band wagon, wearing sets that everyone else is wearing. Either out of spite or other reasons, but you cant expect everyone who wants to dps to wear exactly what end-gamers want them to.

the problem is, ZoS likes to nerf most sets into the ground, so not following the meta tends to cause you to lose dps and that can mean the difference between succeeding at a trial/ vet dungeon attempt, or a wipe.

Agreed. If you've got 8 DDs all running rele and maelstrom bow that's about 80K DPS extra on a trial, or equivalent to 2 to 3 more DDs, and turns a tricky trial into a relatively difficult one. I can't see why you would not want to wear the BIS gear if you can get it easily enough, ok the Bow is still tricky but the rest can be farmed and upgraded if you do it on normal. That then sets you up for vet nicely. Your gear is hidden by your outfit so it's not a style thing.

Recently went from DPS to Tank. Feeling better about it.

While you enjoy stressing about the supreme optimality about how to do 50k by farting out one ability, I will relax knowing that the only thing I have to worry about is staying alive, keeping things attacking me and to position enemies properly. Feels less stressful.

a metronome is a tool you use to set a rythm at a defined bit/s
so I set a metronome to 50 bit/s and increased it up to 58(at 60 the cooldown dosent have time to finish and I couldnt weave anymore)
that helped me increase my skill casting speed.

Huh, complete opposite for me: Always played as a DPS in WoW, but in ESO I feel more inclined to be a tank. Funny how things work for other people, and what their reasons are to play a role they usually wouldn't play.

Congrats! i started at 15k and it took me also almost a year to reach 40k, now i am sitting at 43k and cant get anymore out of my rota/build - but i am still doing a ha rotation. And dont forget that even tho a stamDK doesnt bring much to a party, you benefit a lot from others group buffs. Try a raid dps check, you will hit 60k if you can hit 40k now - which is not too bad.

One thing you have to practice now - if you use relequen - is to keep the stacks up. Sounds pretty basic but it isnt, works fine on a dummy but in a real boss/trial situation its a different story. A lot of people i see in dungeons or trials are unable to keep the stack up, they get to 5-6 stacks, play a mechanic and dont do light attacks while doing so and then are loosing the stacks which is a huge dps loss. Just watch the buffs on a boss the next time you play, the struggle for some people is real. If you cant hold up the stacks you might be better off with a different set.

    Again, good job! Keep practicing.
