Shield vs Frost Staff

I can't make an informed decision when trying to decide between a shield or Frost Staff. This is for a PvP healer with tanking tendencies. So I have double the magicka as stamina. I would mostly be on the resto staff bar. Only on back bar when in trouble or for CC.

Does shield protect you a little more than frost staff? I really really like absorb magic buff with shield.

Pros and cons for both. Can't decide

Play as you like. S&B has more utilities for PVP thought. But all depends how you want to play.

I don't have a preference, just want the one that blocks the best when needed. That bar will be my turtle/run away bar. I would only use Absorb Magic from that line.

Frost staff would leave you with more stamina to roll dodge and break-free. But, you would cripple your magicka regen when blocking. Try both for a few days.

    Good point.

This is for a DK. So even though I only have 15k stamina, I have Helping Hands passive to get back stam. So now you have me leaning towards shield!

I would go Frost staff and get the passive that allows blocking to use Magicka. S&B would get little to no use to you in most cases and I would use the stamina more for sprinting and roll dodging myself.

But really I would be weary on heavy tank responsibilities as you need the magicka for all your skills more. I like using the Frost staff to aggro as needed more than blocking. Sometime you just need the get that boss's attention ;)

A plus for Frost staff: back bar with infused frost enchant will increase your chances for snares and roots. Or back bar with spell damage will boost your heals.

There are sets that give you back magicka when you block or get hit with certain types of attacks.

I prefer Frost staff for magicka toons because it's easier to proc your weapon enchant consistently and you can offer support with Frost Blockade or Else Drain. However I don't put skill points in Tri Focus so that I can still block with stamina.

Also if you want to use the Powered trait you get more benefit with Frost staff than 1h/S.

If you want to be a pure turtle block healer though SnB is MUCH better especially if you slot Def Stance.

The benefit with a frost staff is that you can always cool your beer...

I would go shield over frost, because you could give your shield a triglyph and your sword an absorb magicka glyph and sustain pretty well.

If you are a magica healer, then I would say there is no contest, take the Frost Staff, you will be able to maintain distance to targets, lay down a wall of elements, and tank, all using your magica pool. If you take a shield, for it to be of any real tanking use, you will need to be in melee range and it will be drawing on a small pool of stamina. Obviously if you are a stam healer, its the opposite.

I guess if you literally just want to block, the shield wins. But the staff is also strong in that respect - check out the passives. In this regard I would suggest you slot a Psijic skill to gain the passive that provides about a 2.5k damage shield every time you block and also spend 120 CP points into the CP skill line that gives about a 1.5k damage shield every time you block. Having about 4k damage shields for free when blocking, is lovely.

What is double in numbers ?

As Imperial i have some 11k stamina. With block-heal-block-heal i can survive for a few seconds with DW. Usually thats enough. Depends if there is someone jumping in for you. If not you are dead anyway. If you need more seconds to survive you ll need to use the Frost staff or even invest into blocking costs.

S&B has this nice ultimate though :)
