So hopefully after this update, us PS4 player ought to see some improvements in login speed??? I hope so.

Maintenance means it's time to clean the server's hamster cage. Mr. Cuddles needs a clean, healthy environment.

This entails not only changing the shavings, but also thoroughly cleaning the floor pan, the various tunnels, hamster houses, and, of course, the all-important exercise wheel that powers the server. This can take 3 to 4 hours.

However, sometimes Mr. Cuddles gets loose.

Then the hamster techs have to chase Mr. Cuddles all over the server room: under and over the equipment stacks, all along the cable conduits, and sometimes even under the cabling floor. Imagine having to squeeze under that floor, where there's dust and daddy long legses and bits of Starburst wrappers, trying to coax Mr. Cuddles out with a bit of lettuce. But Mr. Cuddles won't be coaxed; no sir. He's too savvy for that.

Then all of Mr. Cuddles mini jellybeans have to be cleaned up as well. This whole process can take hours and hours on top of the original hamster cage cleaning process.


And that's why Maintenance is sometimes 3 hours and sometimes 12.

So we had a 12 hour outage for the NA server on Sunday due to unknown reasons. Today is an 8 hour maintenance window, at least. So NA server loses out of almost an entire day of the event. Sweet.

I wouldn't mind the longer maintenance if they actually told us why. But of course they're silent as always.

Are you new to MMOs? Every MMO in the history of MMOs has required maintenance, frequently on a weekly basis. MMOs are one of the most complex forms of online games to run and maintain. There’s a lot that can go wrong.

Look, I get it: it’s annoying having to wait for stuff. I’m a shift worker, and work 12 hr days/nights. When I work days, I don’t get to log in and play after work, because by the time I’ve showered and eaten, it’s time for bed. Today is one of my precious days off this week, and I won’t get to play ESO for half the day. I work tomorrow and the next day, meaning I won’t get to play again until Friday, or possibly Saturday if I get called for overtime. Do you see me throwing a temper tantrum over a “missed” day to get freaking boxes in a video game, though? No. Dealing with maintenance is just a fact of life when you play MMOs, and sometimes those maintenance days happen at times that are inconvenient for you. We just have to deal with it like adults. Crying on the forums won’t change it.

The skills needed to create an online game service which is good enough (debatable) are similar to but not quite the same as the expensive skills needed to write high availability, high reliability business services.

This is why we have any sort of significant down times at all.
