Do you switch your Tank to Mag or Stamina DPS, when you need to change role, and why?

Hey,

in some situations tanks switch to DPS:

- an off-tank in a trial, if for some trash or a boss no second tank is needed
- a tank in some dungeons, when a tank isn't needed (Direfrost Keep final boss)
- when doing some overland staff, like questing or Public Dungeons

So, when you swap your Tank to DD, do you chose Mag or Stam DPS? It be nice to clarify in an answer, why you do so (and which class you are playing, although most will be DK I guess).

On a side note, it would be interesting to hear, how much you are changing: Only gear or CP, too.

I'd like to answer myself:
- I play only a casual dk tank, my main is Stam DK DPS, so I am rarely tanking in normal trials and I never tanked in a vet trial, I typically tank only vet dungeons (vanilla and dlc), so I swapped mainly for solo stuff like collecting skyshards, doing public dungeons, Maelstrom Arena etc.
- I am used to Stamina DPS and I used to swap my tank to Stamina DPS, if needed, because I thought "I know this class already"
- Meanwhile I changed my mind and I swap to Magicka DPS. I've got more free skill points for other stuff, it works well and I think DPS are even better because of more Pen in Magicka DPS passives (I don't change CP). Additionally the Apprentice mundus works for Magicka DPS fine, too, and it's another advantage. When I went Stamina DPS I used to swap the mundus and I forgot to change it back when I went tank again all the time and I was in dungeons like "oh, where went my magicka?".
- Currently I use Julianos + Siroria, but I'll change Siroria for Spinner's.

I’d guess for most people it depends on the character’s race. E.g., imperials make pretty good tanks and also have a stam bonus, which magicka dps don’t often benefit from, so it’s generally easier to swap an Imperial tank to stam dps as opposed to magicka. Conversely, bretons have magicka racial bonuses, so a Breton tank is likely better off as a magicka dps.

Personally, most of my tank characters aren’t built to switch to dps on a dime, but I have all of my dps set up to also be able to tank with just a gear, skill, food (and sometimes cp) swap. So if you count it, my tanks who can also dps swap to whichever stam/mag spec they’re normally in, which corresponds to their respective races.

I have 10 toons, the 2 that tank, one is full time tank. The other goes between healer and tank.

Both of my tanks are crafters so skill points are tight, and since I already back bar a destruction staff on them I swap them to Magicka dps when needed. They're both races with better Magicka damage bonuses anyway, so I think it works out alright.

It's easy to switch to "stamdps" from tank by changing food to lava foot soup.

I have separate toons for tanking mainly bc I don't want to spend the time switching skills depending on whats needed I can just switch toons who are ready to go. I have a main tank for trails and vet. I have an off time for seconday trails and can also be used for vets dungeons that need a little extra dps. Then my last toon is a pvp tank/dps build. I also have the same for my DPS (PVE toon/ PVP toon). I started a healer but never been a huge healer fan in game its mostly a back-up if someone in my guild can't find one I can help out if needed.

I've an argonian dragonknight, when I want to dps I switch for sets like Curse of Doylemish (taunt or talons and Zaaaap!), Viper and Velidreth. I don't reallocate the attribute points.

I have an Imperial DK stamina tank and a Magical Dunmer Templar tank. Have not bothered changing races since they rebalanced them. Use to have a warden but changed it to dps, but I could easily tank with it if needed. Also have an extra nigthblade character I was going to tank on but why as nb’s don’t really have much going for them tanking wise. If I could class change to a sorcerer I would and tank with it.

Never change cp points. Both are setup as tanks in cp. It is not really about the 3k cost to change but more about the time as I play on console.

All my morphs are for tanking such as engulfing flames on my stam dk. You can easily quest without changing cp as you do plenty of dps with sets you choose. Generally I have a sword and board for back bar so I can taunt in dungeons runs on normal. If my daily random comes up with a DLC dungeon and the dps is lower cp’s to none I will just go full tank mode and switch sets. I will taunt the bosses and heavy hitters no matter how I am setup. Generally stay as dps for the dungeon runs to help them go quicker.

Never considered changing from a stam to mag or vice versus just because in my case there is no need since my characters are fully maxed out and do fine without it.

When I made my first tank I followed your typical trial tank build. Then I realized I didn’t have to for dungeons in this game.

Changed to 64 points into stamina and only change gear when I want to tank.

I didn’t know you can do that with magicka too. Your stamina needs to be larger then your magicka to tank, how do 64 point magicka builds work?
Looking for any guildies I used to play with:
    Havoc Warhammer - Alair
LoC EQ2 - Mayi and Iskiab
PRX and Tabula Rasa - Rift - Iskiab
Or anyone else I used to play games with in guilds I’ve forgotten

For shard/orb resources? If you can sustain without them it doesn’t really matter which is higher. You can also balance resources with enchants, armor bonuses, and bistat food if you want to swap between a mag build and tanking while relying on synergies. I wouldn’t call it optimal, but it works. The trick I like to use for some of my dedicated tank builds is having mag/stam higher on alternating bars so I can choose which resource to get more of from synergies on the go
