I just started ESO and I’m a long time fan of Elder Scrolls but new to MMORPGs. I’m trying to choose between a Magicka Knightblade or Magicka Dragonknight. Also, is there anyone that plays on Xbox that doesn’t mind teaching a noob :)

I'd suggest taking a look a Xynode. Great place for beginners to advance players...

Also Hack the Minotaur. (He's a x-box player too)

He mostly does PvP battleground builds, but he does have some basic solo PvE builds. Might be a good place to start out a build before getting a little more advance.

    Welcome to Tamriel!

Both magicka nightblades and magicka dragonknights can be very fun to play!

As a new player, I'd encourage you to have fun and experiment with what you like. I've enjoyed leveling up both of them. Still, if you are looking for a quick rundown of the major differences:

Magicka Dragonknights have a lot of abilities that focus on flame damage, locking the enemy in place, and protecting themselves and allies. If you want a class that can stand in the middle of the fight, dishing out damage while staying alive, MagDK is a great choice.

Magicka Nightblades have a toolkit that's built for high damage, burst damage, and stealth. They are very versatile, able to fight from range then spring into the midst of enemies with devastating executes.

Disclaimer: MagDK was my first and still my main class. It took me a long time to level up a MagBlade, but I've enjoyed playing it.

I hope you enjoy ESO, whichever you choose!

As you level up to Champion Rank (level 50), don't worry about making 'wrong' choices with your skill points. You will receive scrolls along the way that will allow you to redesign your character... and you'll have a better idea at that point on how you want to play.

I strongly suggest starting on crafting. It takes months to completely fill out the crafting skills (trait research), and you will want a crafter in your roster of characters.

Run the quests. There is a temptation to shortcut levelling by grinding, but questing will help you learn how ESO works compared to the other TES games, how to play your character well, and you'll pick up quite a bit of gold, gear, and skill points.

Lastly, since the One Tamriel update opened the entire game world, feel free to hop around, if you wish; it's not necessary to enjoy the content in any particular order.

Join a guild that caters to newbies. You'll make friends, have people to play with, and pick up a lot tips. The learning curve will seem intimidating... friends mitigates that.

The game is amazing. It has its issues, as any massive game will, but it is amazing. I hope you have as much fun as I.

What kind of builds did you like to play in previous Elder Scrolls games? It might help when choosing your class.

How about someone that plays on Xbox that doesn't know what he is doing? Is that acceptable as well? :)

    Magical Dragon Knight.

Your best decision to be made in eso.

And buy lots of crowns for zos. They love when you do.

It's important to note that Magicka Dragon Knight class abilities are mostly melee, and Magicka Sorcerer class abilities are mostly ranged. If you have a preference for either melee or ranged, that should probably drive your decision.

    > Magblade

    Siroria (Cloudrest trial, summerset)
Mother's sorrow (World bosses and anchors in Deshaan)
Valkyn Skoria (City of Ash II, Glirion chest)

    >magDK

    Siroria
    BurningSpellweave (City of ash)
    Valkyn skoria

    All divines/Bloodthirsty/Infused or Percise.

Go to craglorn grind Skyreach get someone to help you get to cp160 then go gear up and join some dungeons and learn your rotations. Then you can become an elitist like the real pros.

((30k easily with both builds, 40k easily with a healer running SCP or olo)

Like I suggest to all newbies, don't think too much about it, when you're starting there is no need to rush. Play like how you play other TES games if you like. Test each skill, be intrigued, that is part of the learning. If you worry too much about end game, you won't get there. So just enjoy the game, enjoy the story. learn as much skill as possible and understand them, especially your passives. There are guides that you can read through online, but don't worry about it too much. Just take the essentials for now. You don't need to go in depth of your class or race. Eventually you will learn it. End game though, I will tell you, this both have very intensive rotations, almost unforgiving, but honestly they are very fun to play with. So that is why you need to play this game very casually at the beginning, and really enjoy your character. Right now is the best time for you to make mistakes, and just fool around with your rotation. By the time you reach end game and you want to do end game or hardcore stuff, both the MagDK and MagBlade require focus on their rotations. You have to religiously follow your rotations, like I said almost unforgiving. Unless if you just want to play casually, then you just have to play how you are already playing. Which is also nothing to be ashamed of. So honestly, just enjoy yourself now, no need to rush. Once again, if you try to reach end game now, you might not even get there. Enjoy the story, ESO has a very interesting story line. :D CHeers!

    Welcome to ESO

Most important thing you can do right now is explore, quest and have fun. Try out both Magicka Nightblade and Dragonknight. Take both to L15 or 20 and you’ll get a feel for which one you like best. There’s no ‘right’ answer, so go with the one you like.

I found some of Dottz Gaming’s stuff for beginners really useful.

And there are lots of Xbox guilds which welcome and help new players.

    Enjoy

Different folks have different gameplay priorities. Something that is darned near universally useful though, is this right here:

http://esoitem.uesp.net/viewSkills.php - a reference for all skills in the game including what they do.

https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Online - a reference that will explain just about everything you might want to know about from item sets to help with quests.

These are the only references I use. It has everything I need to create characters, though I suppose if you are more concerned about "builds" you probably want to follow some whomever posting whatever about do this for that whatnot. None of that will make sense to you as a new player without knowing what skills actually do, though, so I would really start with the top link.

I guess from there you can ask yourself do you want to treat this as an RPG or an MMO. My strengths are on storytelling and creativity - the RPG side - so for folks looking for thematic characters with personalities and substance behind them, that's my bread and butter.

Thanks for the links. I’m an RPG gamer at heart. This is my first MMO so I’m naturally treating it as a an RPG. I have held off for years in getting into this game but I love Elder Scrolls and I love the fact this is truly my only chance to explore a vast majority of Tamriel. That is ultimately why I’m playing it. So far it’s a lot of fun but a lot more complicated than I had imagined.

On the RPG end, it really helps to play story content in order the first time, I think. This used to happen naturally, but the game has changed a lot to allow more open world feel. Granted, you may want to play the game like that, but if you don’t, the general story order would be:
    • Escape from Coldharbour
    • Starting island(s) for your alliance
    • Other story zones for your alliance (interspersed with mages/fighters guild quests and main story quests)
    • Cadwell’s silver and gold (optional - these are the other alliance story lines)
    • Morrowind
    • Clockwork City
    • Summerset

These can be done at any time, really, but may have cameos from characters in main quests:
    • Orsinium
    • Craglorn
    • Thieves Guild
    • Dark Brotherhood
    • Murkmire

The weirdest thing in the game now is that main quest used to be level locked and more zone dependent, so you can finish it before going through zone stories now. If you do that you may meet characters you were supposed to meet in later zones but didn’t because you skipped it.

Yes, do the quests once you feel confident enough you can try dungeons or BG.
However most important try to get into some friendly guilds. Its makes the game a lot more fun.

As for builds, just focus on unlocking skills and getting skill points as you might want to tank or heal down the line.
If in guild get some crafted training gear, most give this as free or very cheap to new players.

Once you reach cp160 you can start thinking about builds.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

I was kind of confused actually regarding the quest order. I started in Summerset but then went to daggerfall and completed the Coldharbor quest. From there I was transported to Stros M’Kai. Now I’m doing some quest on that island but when does the next phase of the main quest come along?

Along with the post about doing quests, don't shortcut by grinding... which I too believe... don't be worried about grinding, leveling, then out leveling content.

With the way the game/zones/quests scale, you can never out level content.

There may be times you're simply having a grand ol' time running around terrorizing the creatures of Tamriel and realize you've gained several levels... in many MMOs you may have trivialized some content... not so here.

You are free to level exclusively by questing or grinding to CP 810 then starting with the first quest, and everything in between.

That's something I absolutely love about this game. It's like Burger King... you can have it your way, lol.
    Thank you.

    Take care,

You should play both types. Sounds like you are a content guy so maybe chose a main and do all the content with that one but play other builds on the side with other characters. As others have said a Mag DK is more of a banger in melee and a Mag Blade is more stealth and burst damage with some ranged and some melee.
