I am trying mail a message to the leader of a guild I want to join while playing ESO so I'm using the in-game email. In the 'To' box, I type the player's character name and send but I get a message saying the player is unknown. What am I doing wrong?

    Use their @handle name.
Brunhilda Icehammer - Nord Dragonknight, 'Smith & Enchantress 'What is 'ranged? I need to hit something!!'
Laehl Direthorn - Bosmer Nightblade, Purveyor of fine Clothes, Bows and Staves
Reeza gra-Zuni - Orc Templar 'War Shaman' and Apothecary
Noemi Snowpaw - Kajiit Dragon Knight - I laugh... or I'd have to kill you.
Kitera Dreamon - Breton of The Dominion: Because those Daggers don't appreciate a great Mage.
Lysara Shadowcroft - Dunmer Bloodmage: This will only hurt a lot.

If you know his account name, use the @ in front of it. Like so: @chriss23
Don't use the @ in front if you only know the character name.

At least that's how it works for the chat and whisper, pretty sure mail is the same.

I have tried using both the account name with @ in front and the character name but it still comes up with 'unknown player'! :\

Have you tried mailing to his account name without the @ symbol?

For those unsure the name of the guild leader or any other member of their guild, press the letter "G" and the guild list(s) to which you belong will be listed. Select the "Roster" tab and get the @names you need to send mails.
