Julianos and spinners are good sets and easy to get.

If he is low level I'd seriously consider restarting on another class. Magicka sorcerer does everything better than magblade at this point. If you do stick with magblade, basic skill bar with fire staff would look something like Swallow Soul - Flame Reach - Cloak - Crippling Grasp - Merciless Resolve/Elemental Blockade. Backbar people usually go with restoration staff with Mutagen, healing ward, light armor shield, cloak, concealed weapon.

Well, a common combo is to build up your merciless resolve then soul harvest > fear > spectral bow.
About skills to slot that's entirely up to your playstyle, but i advise you to slot at least one skill from each branch so you get their passives, especially the siphoning one.

It really depends how you want to play or should i say learn to play. If you want to play gankblade it's one thing and playing a well rounded build with a bit of staying power is another.

Dig a grave and pay your respects for the Mageblade... It is the best thing you can do for yours right now before you get your dreams crushed by all the nerfs coming, brother. Shed a tear for them all.

The issue right now with magblade on live are reflections/absorptions. Most magblades try to compensate when they don’t see themselves doing damage by going glass canon which usually ends with them blowing up faster.

I’d say experiment and level purely through BGs. A lot of people really like the class because it’s versatile and has cloak. It’s one of the few classes that can melee, ranged or heal but nerfs are discouraging.

The only important thing to remember is always have one skill of each tree on your bar. Always have cloak, and I’d back bar resto because you’ll need it. Maybe 2 hander too.

Looking for any guildies I used to play with:
    Havoc Warhammer - Alair
LoC EQ2 - Mayi and Iskiab
PRX and Tabula Rasa - Rift - Iskiab
Or anyone else I used to play games with in guilds I’ve forgotten

Reflect is a big issue. Today I fought 2 teams that had 6 dragonknights between them, all of them had wings slotted and used it liberally. Ridiculous. Thankfully next patch that is over.
Resto is advisable but not a requirement. I use 2-hander + inferno staff (previously frost staff). For healing I rely on swallow soul + the psijic skill meditate (the extra healing morph). It works but is obviously very unforgiving. No cloaking and emerging at full health again for me!
One skill from each tree on each bar isn’t exactly necessary. Obviously its beneficial, but its more important to just have a good build.

Agreed about reflections. The more BGs you do the more it’s all sorcs, DKs and Wardens, so 2/3 classes that can negate projectiles. I’ll see the odd Templar and they still perform okay, NBs are just outright weak and I see people complain about DPS NBs when they join the team.

Thanks for all the input. I dont care about the nerfs, i want to get into this playstyle and learn to be as good as possible.

Here is my first attempt. I made some starter gear just to boost my stats. I tried to not slot short range abilities as i will be playing long range most of the time. I am really blank about the skills but ive tried to go through them and this is what ive come up with so far!

Any input on this setup please? Is there a good "rotation" for fast kills? Should i slot cloak on both bars? So many questions :)

    My bar setup:

Bar 1: Swallow soul, crushing shock, impale, flame reach, shadowy disguise ( Ulti Soul harvest )

Bar 2: Cripple, Concealed weapon, Regeneration, Steadfast ward, mark target. ( Soul shred )

If you really wanna play magnb, aka shoot yourself in the feet while replacing your eyeballs with your ***, your bars should looks something like this:

    Inferno staff bar:
Swallow soul, fear/clench, merciless resolve, siphoning attacks/cloak, flexspot (for now I would try elemental drain, bis imo, mages light, double take, refreshing path or whatever you'd like - next patch you will have to use race against time, too good to give up)

    Restoration staff bar:
Healing ward, dampen magic (more shield, less deaths), crippling grasp (here because it forces you to bar swap a lot and keep your berserker glyph up more), cloak or siphoning attacks (depends on the choice you made for your front bar), shadow image (learn to use this, it will save you so many times...when it's not bugged).

For sets there are many options, depends how high cp are you and how many sets you have tbh.

The build is fine, good enough to learn, good job.
For the bars, look above. For ultis keep soul harvest front and use tether/soul siphon in back (resto ult when you'll have it, but I doubt your resto staff is lvl 50 already).

There isn’t a specific bar setup that is ‘best’ for everyone as you imply. I merely gave an indication. I myself use a self designed onslaught/inferno staff build which works great (for me).

The whole concept of using the same non toggle skill on 2 different bars i just wrong imo. You have 10 barslots, that's low, why wasting it on the same bar? Been there, done that (when I was a templar noob I used to slot bol on both bars). Using it on one bar teaches you and makes you flexible...and stronger, since you have an extra slot.
You are right though, the bars are not fixed and depend on your playstyle, but there are some must for every class.
