PvE player asking PvP advice -not whining

Hey just a qwessie. I have crafted myself some recommended armour, mix of med/heavy with impen for my stam NB. I'm usually a thief assassin in PvE so I changed the CP to what was recommended for PvP as well as they are very different for a PvE thief. This event, I was hoping to learn how to survive an unexpected attack. As I said, on paper, I've done what I could, however, when an attack lands, I'm on my knees, can't drink a potion or break free and am dead in 4 or 5 shots. Do PvP players drink potions all the time? That must be pretty expensive? Do you have a skill spammed that prevents the stun? I'm clueless and would like to learn. With so many opportunities to practice dying in the quest towns, I thought this would be a good time. Is it because more than one Overlord is hitting me at the same time :D Or is such an attack survivable to those of you more experienced players? How do I "git gud" because I would like to. I have enjoyed the little bit of PvP these events expose us PvE players to but I don't want to be a drain on a group I might join. I don't wish to zerg, I'd like to learn to be a better player but with death in 4 seconds, I'm not alive long enough to learn anything, which by the way is hillarious considering I'm CP 900 or so.

If you just want to survive an unexpected attack (rather than win the fight), build tanky. 2x defensive sets, defensive monster set, sustain glyphs on jewelry. You won't necessarily win, but you'll be able to survive and possibly escape--learn about cloak counters in PvP so you aren't wasting magicka cloaking in spots where it won't help, though.
when an attack lands, I'm on my knees, can't drink a potion or break free and am dead in 4 or 5 shots..

Don't sprint until you are out of stam while questing in Cyro. You want to always have enough stam to break free and dodgeroll--do those quickly with a self heal snuck in-between will allow you survive most ganks.
Do PvP players drink potions all the time?

Yes. You don't need to, if your goal is just survival, though. And you can always get by with trash pots or the alliance vendor pots, if you are looking to save money.

I remember the times when I had the same problem as you. There were these huge orc stamblades in BG that were hitting me like a truck. And the worst thing was that they had so much healing from Vigor that my attacks were barely scratching their skin. Now I don't have much problem with them thanks to my positioning and tankier and/or high mobility builds.

No. We don't drink immovability potions all the time. I once theorycrafted a build that would get almost 100% uptime on CC immunity but it turned out to be extremely expensive to play.

4 or 5 shots is actually a lot of time to react. Break free immediately then either roll dodge or block the next strike of enemy combo. CC them with a stun or better yet with a knockback. That will give you a breathing chance. If you can't break free then either you have too much lag or don't have enough stamina. This happens. There are specific defensive sets invented specifically for enduring a full stun duration.

What is more important though is positioning. You should allways anticipate an attack and put yourself out of harms way. Use natural cover to hide your approach. You are being ganked because you allow it. And you allow it by positioning yourself where gankers might be.

Or you could get a more tanky build.

Once I was browsing my inventory in sneak mode on my Magplar. I've been on a rock in the middle of nowhere. And suddenly I saw a nightblade running through me. I didn't even bother reacting to him immediately as he proceeeded to attack me. It was in noCP fyi. I just broke free, cast flame reach to knock him away, healed myself up and phlegmatically buffed myself up and obliterated him with a combo. 83% of damage mitigation does it's job. Add healing over time, burst heal and you will survive much longer. This is possible on almost every class.

Don't play CP PvP. CP ruins the game.

Its usually break free, roll dodge, and block, with a self-heal if you can, like DeadlyRecluse said. Surviving the initial burst of a gank attack is mostly about getting control of your character back as soon as possible, so you can move, react, and self-heal.

The stereotype of PvP players being poor is true largely due to potion consumption.

I’d also suggest you rebind your break free / interupt key. I have mine set to the middle mouse button (scroll wheel push down)

Oh this is the most helpful advice I had so far. Thank you very much, turns our right + left mouse to break free seems to not work all the time especially during rush hours but single button worked perfectly everytime.

Join a PvP guild or even message someone who kills you. It’s the best way to pick up specific personalized tips on PvP. The thing about PvP is that EVERYONE starts like you do, clueless about how to PvP. It’s something that you learn how to do.
People, even “enemies” are actually more than happy to help.

Duel. And Duel some more. That’s the best way to learn to initially survive and practice breaking free etc. and to get comfortable being in combat and fighting a person.

To answer a specific question: YES run pots. Yes they are expensive. Run them. It takes time but the main thing to understand is that people WILL help you.

Use a headset, listen for sounds of incoming attacks. Some are faint but they are there.

Always be checking the map. If you have a quest to turn in at Bruma, and an enemy alliance has taken it over. Wait patiently. Do a delve nearby. Check back on the town 15-20minutes later, then go turn in the quest.

Most importantly, be aware. Like, 100% of the time never let your guard down.

Also, feel free to use any keeps as a place to rest. A lotta people here will give you great advice on positioning, how and when to attack, etc. But if you get super stressed out and need a chance to rest. Come into a keep and rest. This is where you're suppose to go to feel safe most of the time. You can be attacked in the outter walls, so just head into the inner of the keep. Take 5, rest. This is important for planning where you are going to go next. You can stock up on potions from the NPC, check the map and pencil in where the enemy is, and create a way to get to where you need to go.

Hey I never thought of that. I usually only use it on discord for dungeons. But yes, the stereo effect would make a major difference for directional and ambient sounds.

Headset, yeah, I should've done that on Saturday. Probably would've saved my hide in Cheydinhal. (Nice play, gankers. I was being super sneaky, got the quest, completed it without any of you guys noticing, but a few of you outsnuck me right as I was turning it in.)

Still, only died maybe 10 times over the weekend, and killed three players, in a CP campaign where I'm only 50CP, so I felt pretty good. I wasn't truly focused on the town quests; I was also scouting and skyshard hunting since I need a lot of skill points. And I repaired a few keeps and jumped into alliance fights whenever I encountered them for some extra AP.

What made me smile was when I snuck into Cropsford to turn in some dumb quest I'd picked up in the wilderness, four players emerged after I'd turned it in on the outskirts. I backed away, ramping up my buffs, and then (predictably) when they attacked, I dropped Ultimate and a few other things on them. Yes, I died--I think the lowest among them was 630CP or so. But my little "kill 20 players" updated with a new kill.

I can hear them now: "Dude, you got killed by a newbie PVE. Only 50CP!"
    "Shut up and rezz me!"

All I can say is I'll be back later, with more experience, CP, and better skills/gear. Muahaha . . .

That's pretty much the stepping stones of PvP you're going up now. Once you figure out your playstyle, it's all about gear optimization to help push that playstyle to the max. CP helps, but so too does experience.

Be sure to play some battlegrounds. BGs, while CP may not be turned on, is an excellent place to learn how to play with others and to polish up your playstyle. This is mainly due to how high energy and close quarters BGs are, cause fights will break out super fast. Which is waaay different from playing Cyrodiil and not finding an enemy player for over 20 minutes sometimes.

I gotta be honest--I've avoided BG so far, partly due to crappy gear, and partly due to the posts I keep reading about how useless NBs are there. I'll probably wait until I see what the class changes actually do live, but then? Yeah, I'll try it.

I've already maxed out Bow, so I think I'll be questing and building up the 2H skills for better melee.

Not sure what server or platform you play on. But I know on PC NA there are tons of pvp guilds that will accept almost anyone and are willing to help newer pvpers. I know there was a ton of rage on the forums over the event from people getting killed in the towns. But I do hope more pvers who were in the pvp zones do decide to come back in more often and try and learn the pvp side of the game. When its not lagging it really is fun.

Im pretty much saying the same things already said by others on here, but they are true. Listen to the sounds since most attacks have a specific sound they make before they hit you, for example snipe. Watch the animations for heavy hitting skills and be prepared to dodge or block (dizzy swing, snipe, beetle) But also expect to die, a lot. This games pvp can be very discouraging to newer pvpers with how hard specific abilities and combos can be. Chances are if you dont have much experience you can be killed in 4-5 attacks from a single player. I would also suggest BGs to get experience like someone here said, its fast paced and you will be constantly finding fights instead of searching in cyrodill and hoping to find a fair fight.

Also if you do go into cyrodill, do not chase small groups of players moving as one. You may think you have them on the run since it looks like you outnumber them 3-1 and they are running, but dont do it. You will be killed.

Psijic ulti is a good counter against ganks since it takes you 4 seconds back in time. You can also place a Shadow Image right before turning in a quest
