What is the intent for the PVP portion of the 5 year event?

After three solid days of trying to do this on PC NA, that is my question. Some background: I’ve been playing ESO roughly since launch, with a period of high activity, then kids appeared and things slowed way down, and when the Jester’s Festival came around this year I hopped back in.

I always did PvE because I don’t have a lot of time to spec out my toon multiple ways to accommodate both PvE and PvP. But with this 5 year thing, I wanted to give PvP a try, and I love the 5 companions and I wanted to get the Tharn pages. I’ve played PvP in other games, it’s definitely fun. The Cyrodiil campaign is really excellent. And up until now, I had high regards for the ESO community as well. Everyone is pretty collaborative, and apart from a handful of jerks who spout off in zone chat, life as a player is pretty good.

I did what I was able to spec out my DC 50 CP200ish magplar, following some online guides. I did some grinding to get skill points to balance out my attacks. It’s not the best, but it’s the best I could do under the circumstances with the time I have at my disposal.

Upon going into Sheogorath, which was the campaign I joined because it was open at the time, AD have overrun the entire map. I spent the first part of the evening getting killed and no quests done. So I joined another map as a guest that had a ton of DC on it. I started doing some quests in Bruma, and then I found AD and EP people teaming up and holding down the houses with the turn-ins. In one of them, they somehow got siege equipment inside. There were like 6 or 7 people in each house, killing people once they appeared at the door.

So we tried to rally and get in the house. I got 16 people in a group, we got buffed and got our ults up, and went in, and did not make a single dent in any of them. We tried a few more times, and then we gave up, some people logged, some went to find other places where they would be able to do and turn in quests.

Asking for help in the chat, or complaining about the situation, mostly got derisive responses from people I assume to be seasoned PvP players, incorporating all of the usual critical “carebear” style tropes I’ve seen since the first days of WoW. There were a few exceptions, some of whom came and actually helped. Those guys were also unable to extract the quest campers.

I view this as an exploit that goes outside the intent of the game. If the AD or EP came in and tried to take the town, great, let’s rally and fight back. If I get killed on the road or in town, fine, that’s the design. It’s a PvP zone, and I accept that. But groups of elite players using the door lag, seige equipment, and heavily geared and buffed toons to deny access without any risk to self is ridiculous. And it’s reflective of the toxic atmosphere that the ESO PvP culture appears to be fostering. They aren’t playing to win the game, they are just making sure I can’t play because I’m a lame “quester”.

Right now, as I write this, a Twitch streamer named t***p is being obnoxious to and killing questers unless they pay him a “questing license fee” of 500g to let them stay and play (which I probably would have paid if he stuck to it), and everyone in the chat is derisively mocking the questers whether they pay or not. They are saying that PvE are old people and lame. As an “old person”, I take offense. The PvE crowd also calls PvPers “talentless kids”, which the people in chat also pointed out, and I saw that a lot in zone chat, e.g. “when mommy gets home they’ll have to log off”. Is this the community ZAM intends to foster and support? People trying PvP for the first time are not lead down a path of building teamwork and strategic prowess, they are doing the same kind of stuff they do everywhere else and being mocked and tortured while they do it.

ZAM personnel, you all designed and promoted an event that celebrates the Five Companions. I love that. I really love the central quest line, so I wanted to get all of the pages, and I wanted to experience new things in the game that I hadn’t tried before. I was excited to do all of it. I thought that your intent in providing these incentives was to get people to try out content that they maybe had not experienced to date.

Based on discussions in the form, chats, and reddit, it is now my understanding from PvP players is that the PvP event is not designed to get PvE players into PvP, but to provide fresh and easy meat for PvPers to rack up tons of kills, and stream their exploits on Twitch killing loads of PvE players while fans cheer them on. That is the perspective many of them have shared.

So, with all of that in mind, this is my question: what the hell are you guys actually trying to achieve? I really want to know. Because if you want to broaden the enjoyment of the game for your customers by giving them incentives to try new content, speaking as a long-term consumer of your product, you are failing to provide a positive first impression of that content. If your intent is to feed the PvP community with players they can repeatedly gank and mock, who don't have the gear or skills to handle the zone, I'd suggest telling us all that up front. That way we're going in eyes wide open.

I was more excited these past two weeks about ESO than I have been since it first came out. As of today, I’m just disgusted, having been repeatedly mocked just for expressing my negative views about what I believe to be an unfair and unintended exploit, even though I support PvP in general. Instead of exploring PvP and finding another supportive community of like-minded players, whose ranks I would have been happy to join, I got to view the dark underbelly of the community, and at the end of the day, I did not find the experience enjoyable.

The only thing I have to say about this is, you might wanna remove the name of the Twitch streamer. Naming and shaming is against the rules.

Zos understand most players do both PvE and Pvp though some only want to PvE and others only want to PvP.

They balance that out they have several weeks of PvE events and a solitary week of PvP events. At that, no one NEEDs to do the PvP event as everything is obtainable via PvE parts with the exception of some events do have an achievement tied to some PvP. Those really interested in getting all the achievements already so some PvP.

To answer your question: nothing. Tickets to purchase Event cosmetics are in the Crown Store.

You also have another week to acquire Tharn pages by whatever quest floats your boat.

Gave away 4 pages myself to guildies. The drop rate is fairly generous.

I can't seem to edit my post, I'm sure a moderator will remove it if it's a problem. I also left ZAM in the title when I was typing "the" over the top of it. There are multiple sins to account for.

ZOS obviously designed this event to be appealing to all players as the focus changes each week. This is PVP week.

Predictably, players who do not enjoy PVP but are addicted to loot boxes are going to Cyrodiil anyway and having a completely miserable time.

The issue here is the obsession with loot boxes which is driving players to do things they do not enjoy. This is why games of chance are heavily regulated in RL. They are psychologically exploitative and a high percentage of people just can't handle that.

At this point, many otherwise bored PVP players are going to the towns because they are entertained by the social dynamics (salt). Your post is going to drive more there.

As a primarily PvPer, I’m sorry. Yes it’s stupid and childish, no it’s not “just PvP,” because on any other day of the year you can pretty much go to a town and do whatever, buy gear and not worry too much about it. I love PvP in this game, but most PvPers are a bunch of wankers including some streamers who put on an air of being “above” it all. A lot of people PvP because they thrive in a toxic environment. My best advice to you is to try to go off hours, look for a campaign your faction controls and so on. Or you know what? Just let it go. None of the rewards are all that good, you still can get your tickets regardless and there are still four other weeks to the event. In the end, missing a few days or a week isn’t going to make much of a difference and you’ll save yourself a lot of grief. Let those streamers stand there for days if they want, you don’t have to feed into it.

My understanding, and correct me if I am wrong, is that the Tharn pages are only available through PvP quests. Therefore, if I want to get the Indrik berries (assuming I already have 4 feathers or am willing to wait), I have 32 tickets left when I need 40 to get the pages, which would cost me 2000 crowns to make up the difference. The opportunity cost of those crowns is too high to pay that. Two Tharn pages are not worth an entire DLC.

But again, that has nothing to do with my post. You guys are not focused on the question at hand, which is this: asking as a paying customer of the game, what consumer experience did they intend for me to have as an unseasoned PvP player by providing style incentives to try PvP content?

If you have insight into that, I'm happy to hear it..

Quite to the contrary, I responded to your intent. Perhaps I should expand:

    1) ZoS won't do anything about the campers. They may not like it; they certainly should not be surprised; they should not have created an opportunity for scrubs to take advantage of helpless players; and they will not admit they screwed up.

    2) There are multiple avenues to acquire the cosmetics. One of them generates practically pure profit for the publisher. They will use the excuse that the cosmetics are tradeable to avoid a mea culpa on the design of this week's Event.

    3) Frankly, many PvP players do not view this Event as an opportunity to welcome new PvP players. PvP is highly competitive, and new players are a liability; most PvP players know the majority of PvE players will vanish once they've acquired the cosmetics; and it should properly be the publisher's job to design a PvP event that welcomes, encourages, and rewards PvP newbies.

If you are relatively new to MMO Events 'ZoS style', then be aware the Events are essentially bolted onto existing content. No accommodation is made for server load, node and NPC/monster respawns, enhanced grouping tools, or detailed instruction and tutorials on how to enjoy the Event.

I'm on your side. I have learned to be a ZoS cynic.

You can buy the Tharn pages from other players for gold/trade/the like. Check guild stores! Also, all the pages will be available to get from boxes in the last week of the event <3

    Beyond that, I’m so sorry you had a bad time. I was an AD in Sheogorath trying to stop a couple of my alliance from killing quester, but it seems there’s no convincing them. Best way to get around it is find a campaign where your alliance has most of the map, or take a break from event stuff this week ;u;

The pages can be obtained through trades with other players. During week five of the event, all pages will have a chance to drop and all activities from weeks 1-4 will award loot boxes.

The only part I have issue with is that quest givers are inside buildings with doors on them. Pretty sure they dropped doors from towers way back in order to avoid issues similar to this one. I say remove the doors to make it less of an ambush involving potential load screens or move the quest givers outside.

ZOS is giving players this terrain advantage. The players aren't responsible for their actions as long as they aren't exploiting and there is no exploit present here. That doesn't mean that this can't be explored to be made a bit more balanced in the future, but for now, players are only using the tools they are given by holding up in a building they know the enemy will enter and using the door/load screen as a bottleneck.

Affordable? Perhaps. Worth the gold? Not at all. I wouldn’t even pay 1 gold for a ‘questing license’ when I was able to quest peacefully with red and blue just this morning for free. You, my good man, are taking it too far.

Simple solution is for me to just queue into another campaign if I see you.

If you have insight into that, I'm happy to hear it..

As others have mentioned you can buy the pages from guild stores, wait till the last week to farm those pages, and you can even trade your duplicates with other players until you get them all.

I am not an altoholic. I only have two characters and I deleted all the rest, but at the moment I'm only playing one. The reason I'm mentioning this is due to the fact that I only completed writs on one character, which limits the amount of boxes I could get to 7 per day during the first week. That was my choice. Now PvP lands has variety of daily quests that involve killing others, stealing scrolls, taking keeps, scouting, etc. However, the most lucrative option is to do the very easy town quests. One could argue that the risk of being attacked justifies the ease of completion for these quests, since one could potentially reach the max of daily quests on one character without wasting too much time by just doing these quests. Of course, specifically doing these quests and ignoring all the rest would be one's choice.

You specifically want to know what kind of experience ZOS wants you to have? In relation to Cyrodiil, if you consider that the most obvious daily quests are the ones in the starting area it's pretty clear that they want you to go out into the world and do PvP that is specifically related to the alliance war. If you want to do the very easy PvE oriented quests, which you have to go out of your way to find then you must have the mindset that you can be attacked at any moment. Ideally you will learn from your experience and improve as a player. This might even result in you enjoying PvP once you start getting the better of others.

    Favorite Foods and Potions
    https://media.giphy.com/media/3otPoTggaYFNd1FdAI/giphy.gif
    • Parse Food for PvE:(DPS) Ghastly Eye Bowl (increases Max Magicka by 4592 and Magicka Recovery by 459 for 2 hours).
    • Gold/Purple Food for Sorc PvP and Meme Tanking:(PvP) Clockwork Citrus Filet (increases Max Health by 3326, Health Recovery by 406 [useful if stage 1 vampire], Max Magicka by 3080, and Magicka Recovery by 338 for 2 hours). Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar/arcanist will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

even i as a pve only player thinks some pve palyers are massively entitled about this event - this is an event for EVERYONE you know and ESO has a large pvp population as well - so 1/5 of it - not 50%; 1/5 is pvp oriented and people loose their ***?

Affordable? Perhaps. Worth the gold? Not at all. I wouldn’t even pay 1 gold for a ‘questing license’ when I was able to quest peacefully with red and blue just this morning for free. You, my good man, are taking it too far.

Simple solution is for me to just queue into another campaign if I see you.

That is true. But you can't be everywhere at once. I know because I haven't come across you so far, and if I did I'd be sure to stay far away.

I would rather be a fugitive of the law a few short days and get killed a couple times then pay gold I'm saving up for things XD If you catch me, good on you. But either way I'm putting in my time to get my boxes.

    what or who is ZAM?

I explained this earlier, but I would hate to discourage such a relentlessly curious individual. ZAM is an acronym we use at work, and I absentmindedly wrote ZAM instead of ZOS, and then I thought better of it and attempted to type "the" over the ZAM, but instead wrote it in front, and I submitted the post without recognizing that I had done this. The root cause, of course, is that I'm old and lame.
