I certainly see no need for it. Those wishing to RP it can easily already do so. Seriously, nothing is stopping you from naming your weapon right now in your own head-lore. Like pets and mounts, it's doubtful they'll let other players see the name, so does this feature really need to be added just for self-validation that your weapons are named?
On the flip, it's not a feature that would affect gameplay, or anything really, negatively so I wouldn't vote against it (as long as no one else is forced to read it). I'm always happy to see new features added that a significant portion of the playerbase have been asking for, even if it wasn't something I personally wanted. (Honestly, that's how I feel about Necromancers. I never wanted to play one, and their new class does nothing for me or my existing characters, but I am happy for all the players who have been begging for them since the game came out.)
There is another option I haven't seen proposed yet... I see the OP is on PC so good news! You could easily make an add-on that lets you fulfill your wish of naming your weapons. Given that ZOS probably wouldn't let other players see its name, you could even make your add-on better fulfill your desires by sharing weapon names between any players using it.
