Is ESO deliberately destroying the economy and why?

The impact of the anniversary gifts has been massive. i see some prices drop by 99% and have no confidence in other costs in the auctions. i could have understood a day of this but the volume of formerly scarce items is trashing the market. Is there a good reason to do this?

Its not destroying, but keeping it healthy. Constant growth isnt good, nor are rising prices. And they do this every year. Prices will go up again after l the event, setting a new average price on everything.

This is mostly meant to avoid prices becomming to high for casual and new players, to keep all items avaible to everyone.

Oh no it’s definitely crashing the motif market, it’s also definitely intended. Thankfully it’s not as bad this year, yet, due to the companion pages taking up the usual motif spots

Give it five or so months and then prices will slowly rise back to something close to normal and it’ll be worthwhile to run the content usuall required to obtain the motifs.

rising prices are mostly a problem of Alchemiy Mats and potions (atleast on pc eu)

...motifs are dropping and were nearly worthless before the event and now even worse. (exeptions aside ofc)
Yes the Droprate isnt super high, but the fact that any motif can drop aint great ieither...keeping a special unique motif for these anniversarys would have been way better for the motif economy.

    Yes.

It ensures that those chasing the next scarce/valuable motif items will need to do the newer content. From ZOS’s point of view it’s the second phase of life for DLC material after you’ve exhausted the early adopters and before you nerf the dungeon so the majority can actually face doing it.

Plus giving away, say 10/14 of a motif set must encourage a few new collectors and thus grow the motif market.

They’re not destroying the economy, they’re simply moving the scarcity and demand around a bit.

Point been? ESO is not EVE to have a player driven economy that greatly impacts the game.
Such events are healthy for casual people like myself get whole full 14page motif for their collection, without having spent 1 year gathering the money for 1 full motif.

I don't care about the economy, especially in a game. I see this event as an opportunity to help people get things they've really wanted to have but can't afford otherwise. Three years ago when the first version of this event with motifs ran, I was able to realize a dream of mine and become a true master of styles. Last year and now again this year I help others become masters of more styles with low priced motifs and giveaways. This year I am also slowly working towards learning many motifs on the character who should have been my primary crafter. It's awesome!

Since only weeks 1 and 5 are Crafting, 3 of these weeks are going to see a huge drop in Box Rate. I am going to go from 100 to 140 boxes a day to maybe 5 to 10. So, the Motif drop rate is not going to be as high as you think

I don't know. I recently bought some guar stomp pieces because I was done doing the dailies. Some of the pieces were fairly pricey. Prices may go down on some things but then there are new items to sell.

One thing to consider is that dropping prices might be balanced out by people who don't normally buy motifs taking advantage of the low prices - so where you might have sold 1 motif for 40k now you could sell 4 for 10k. I can't speak for anyone else of course but I've already bought a few which would normally be on my "maybe one day if I don't have anything else to do with the gold" list, and I'm planning to get more later on when the prices will hopefully drop even more.

But also I'm surprised that anyone expects prices in a virtual economy (or any economy) to stay constant or to only increase, or thinks that would actually be a good thing. I thought all MMOs since the early days of Ultima Online had been making an effort to avoid that because the end result is everyone except the power sellers gets locked out of the economy and then the whole thing crashes because there's only so many times you can sell the same items to the same people who are all hoping to sell it on for a greater profit.

One my friends who is good with the math; figures anything more than 40k for a motif and you’re better buying the book from a crown seller.

I just got the Welkynar crown store Motif for 540k from trusted seller. Wouldn’t had been able to buy half the set from traders at that price.

Traders are a rip for Motifs.

    Choose your crown seller wisely.

I am getting 10K per motif, 2k per furniture recipe, and 1k per prophet style piece. I have already made 2 million gold in week 1. Prior to this event, you'd be lucky to sell some of these motifs for 10K. The market is strong.

I'm always perplexed by such threads and claims. Whilst prices have fallen, it's actually easy to make more gold if that's your main complaint here. Regardless of drop rates, there are more rarer motifs around, meaning a lot more players listing very rare motifs and items for a fraction of their worth. I've made more this week than I did in the previous month combined. And I've only been doing writs on 4 characters, so it's not as if I'm going ott with 15 characters on 7 accounts.

I've been finding silver dawn, welkynar etc etc pages for as little as 15k. That's an easy flip on any server, Then there's the folk listing the pearl and gall ingredients like they would list some of the trash (those blue mushroom type things)

Of course some items do bomb and never do recover, but that's because ZoS completely screw up the drop rates (that cwc control panel from last year being a prime example).

Drop rate in previous years was off the chart compared to this one. Change is good, the popular items just shift..

    So what.
Everybody gets free or cheap motifs. You can earn money doing other things until the prices rise again. It's a fake economy with fake money inside a game. Some of us like the opportunity to get some rare motifs for a little cheaper.

The price curve for motifs is always downward. The anniversary just speeds that up a bit.

Because you only need each motif page once, unless you are a hardcore crafter that wants to have multiple characters doing max writs for Master Writs.

So demand diminishes with each motif that is learned and things get cheaper over time.

But the tradeoff is that previous anniversary events were only 2 weeks. This one is 5. While I think we'll see prices remain fairly stable during weeks 2-4, they will probably still decline somewhat. And then we have a final week where everyone will be farming like crazy (if they aren't already burned out).

Plus, the motifs that drop from delve/WB dailies will still go down, since everyone will be doing those dailies this week.

Prophet pages have completely tanked, though. I can't even sell them for 500 gold now on XB NA. Well, some of them sold at that price, but last night, I didn't sell any.

Also, it makes a difference how many trade guilds you're in and where they're located. I made pretty good bank the beginning of the first week, since one of my traders had a prime spot, but they lost it this week, so it's at a 2nd-tier trading spot this week, and my sales since Sunday night have sharply declined.

There’s so many motifs in the game now - I feel sorry for anyone who’s looking to max a crafter. The gold and/or grind involved is pretty nuts. And a growing number of motifs are locked behind content that a lot can’t grind even if they wanted to.

I think it’s great that ZOS has this event to help knock down prices - it gives people some chance.

The game economy will be fine - there has always been stuff players will pay for and most likely there always will be. It’s just that what that is exactly will change over time. No problems.

of course its gonna fluctuate. There's a special event going on, so an influx of motifs, prices will drop - for awhile..

Then, in 2 months prices will be right back up to normal.

    It's no big deal.

Always look at the big picture when your dealing with economics.
