I am sorry but doing something the same way for years is not an excuse. Life is fluid, processes and technologies change, and if you have a server in the EU then carry out maintenance during EU off-peak hours.
The moment the customer starts making excuses on behalf of a company is the moment the customer bends over and starts paying the company to “take advantage” of their compromises position.
