Question for the PvPers out there

Hail and well met, all,

I personally do not PvP, but my son, and his two friends do. They’ve recently joined the game, and like any good father… I guess I’m supporting him in game as I do in RL, lol.

He and his friends want to focus on PvP, and the only advice I’ve been able to give is regardless of role or resource usage, wear Plate/Heavy armor… or so I’ve read.

I have lv 50 crafters in all things, (ok… Alchemy is only 46, but 50 in all else).

Heavy armor is fine for them even in PvE since they plan to play together all the time.

I’m making them Training trait armor and weapons for levels 10, 20, 30, etc etc.

At what point, if any, is it worth it to improve their gear, and to what tier; green, blue, purple <-- they are SO on their own for supplying these, (except my son), Legendary <-- HAHAHAHAHA?

Will gear improvement matter at all, or are they always going to get ROFLStomped because they are newbies with no CP… or many SP for that matter?

I don’t want to waste tempers just ‘cause… but I’m willing to use what I have and buy more, (except purple), if it will genuinely help them starting at level…. ??

Thank you for your time and help.

Thus do I make sacrifice to the top tier PvPers out there; come forth and stomp mudholes in their butts and walk them dry 😊
Thank you.

Take care,

I would suggest they just grind to lvl 50 and enjoy no CP pvp, either bg or sotha. Heavy is definitely the most forgiving and has lots of good options for Stam builds. Just give them impen armour trait and protection jewlery trait if you can. The only proper grind for a pvp player is undaunted, and it's not as bad as it used to be.

For PVP, I'd recommend starting out with Impenetrable trait armor, as that will protect them best from opponents' critical hits.

    Awesome, thank you both.

What about improving the gear; green, blue, etc?

At what level gear, if any, should I start using tempers to improve the gear... or just give them the base "white" gear until they hit Lv 50 or CP 160?

I can probably cover them all in green gear every 10 levels... not sure I can do that with blue, (though I can my son for sure), and I wouldn't bother with purple/gold gear until... and IF... they get to CP 160.

    Thanks again.
    Thank you.

For player levels (1 - 50), I always used blue gear and weapons.

All of my PvP characters run purple gear and weapons. The only items improved to Legendary are weapons that I am dead certain are universally useful - certain monster helms, or Arena weapons.

I made the mistake in the past of acquiring or improving items to Legendary, only to see them sidelined due to balance changes or shifts in 'meta' (I'm looking at you, Red Mountain jewelry).

There is also the consideration of trying different builds to discover the one build that works best for one's playstyle... and even then, I only 'gold' out the weapons. My stamplar build has survived several patches now, yet I haven't yet felt the need (or had the mats) to 'gold' the jewelry.

In short, easy does it until or unless you have mats/money to burn

I certainly have green mats to burn for all three of them, and blue to burn for my son, (yes... I'm playing favorites there, so shoot me, LOL).

Great advice. Thank you very much.

I've already made their Lv 10 gear with Training trait. I'll make their Lv 20 gear with Impen trait and green/blue tier.

Let's see if they stick with the game 'til Lv 30... they tend to be game jumpers... recently ARK, APEX, Anthem, ARK, a few others, now they're trying ESO. Pretty sure they'll make it to Lv 20, maybe 30 before flitting off to some other game... however I'm sure ESO will be in their "rotation" going forward.

Guess that gives me time to farm mats for them... wait... WHAT?

Would that I could for the game.

I did tell him that he and his friends have to gather everything they see since all my crafters are Lv 50 and CP 338... so I CAN'T gather the materials for them... which I've always though sucked.

In RL he's got that covered though I must admit. He's 17, been working as an Assistant Martial Arts instructor since he was 14, making $10/hr cash under the table... pretty sure the rotten kid has more discretionary money than I do, LOL.

But during their inevitable hiatus to another game, I'll make sure to farm what I can, and buy what I can't for them. What else am I gonna do with all my ingame money anyway? LOL.
    Thank you.

When I leveled my alts I did blue gear and white jewellery. 7 piece set on weapons and another 5 piece set. That way if you get a weapon drop you can upgrade it without losing your 5 piece bonus.

Make sure to have 1 light, 1 med and 1 heavy to level up the armour skill lines. Always heavy chest and light belt.

If you do go purple on some pieces, do it on the weapons and chest. Jewellery is not worth going more than white on given the cost. Purple runes are the way to go.

After playing a match, be sure they know they can buy level appropriate food and potions from the battleground vendor with alliance points, they make a big difference.

Looking for any guildies I used to play with:
    Havoc Warhammer - Alair
LoC EQ2 - Mayi and Iskiab
PRX and Tabula Rasa - Rift - Iskiab
Or anyone else I used to play games with in guilds I’ve forgotten

    Dont gold anything til 160

and never training, if they want a training set at 160 to gain points faster have it stay purple. its not worth it

Good stuff to know. Yes, I've advised them on 5 heavy, 1 med, 1 light to start.

I also give them so much food they're probably throwing it up on your all in Cyrodil :)
    Thank you.

First they must decide what they want to play as whether it’s stam or mag, Get to 50, craft gear without any gold gear, go to bgs to learn how to play the game. If they can get through bgs then they’ll be set.

Try not to do everything because not everyone sticks with the game.

For leveling, always wear training everything, and blue is fine, maybe even purple if you have the tempers to spare easily. Once to CP160, then gold weapons are pretty much mandatory, but can still get away with purple armor. Don't gold out an armor set til you know for certain you going to be running it for a while.

The breaks in the materials used to craft are at levels 16, 26, 36, and 46. I craft sets for leveling at these levels before I even start working on the toon so when I get to that level I have level appropriate sets ready to go. For leveling, just wear the jewelry you find.

All impen trait for any PvP toon is a good idea for sure. And generally, heavy armor is OP, but not so much anymore. Stam toons are good in 6 piece medium one heavy now or even all medium, and mag users tend to stick with 5/1/1 light/med/hvy for the undaunted passive bonus from wearing different armor weights.

Also, guilds will almost always have people on that can be asked for help, so it's nice to find a decent guild or two so there are always people on to ask for advice.

Try not to do everything because not everyone sticks with the game.

Currently, and as we all know this could change:

Son: Orc, Stam DK, 2H & 1H/Shield Tank role
Friend 1: Breton, Mag Blade, DW & Destro Staff, Ranged DPS role
Friend 2: Orc, Stamplar, 2H & DW, melee deps role

There are some sub-optimal choices there, and I advised them of such, but told them fun trumps meta. If the Magblade wants to use DW, without yet having any passives/gear to support Magiccka recovery... meh... just have fun. Though I did make him gear with more Magicka and Mag Recovery on it. Once he can get some more passives, I'll revert him to more spell dmg/crit gear.

As long as the boys are having fun, I'll make them what they want, and spec it as best I can to optimize them as much as possible.
    Thank you.

My son and his friend decided to play the game. Like a good Mom, I made them armor. So, how did he repay me? He made his character an EP (because his friend wanted to be EP).

If I see either of them in Cyrodiil, they are dead meat. Fortunately, he doesn't like to PVP.

First they need to join a PVP guild run with groups and people that have some idea whats going on... ... Next is learning and patience .... Dueling with friends will make you much better much quicker ...

Heavy nor any armor will help you you need to learn the mechanics of player vs player ... Impen is more important then armor choice ... There is a distinct learning curve to PVP and frustration at times ... After you become competent.. PVP is by far the most rewarding part of this game and it will hook you for years IMO....

Orc is the master race (IMO) for stam toons....swap to Redguard if sustain issues, but start out Orc. You can't tank and do anything else, you can't dual role in this game. So they have to pick, tank or dps. The standard heavy armor stam DK is two hand/s&b so have execute one bar, and defense other bar.

Breton good race for mag user, but the dual wield on a mag toon is a mistake. Dual wield and two hand or for stam toons. Mag toons should be restro/destro, destro/desto or destro/s&b.

Friend #2 looks pretty solid from the limited info given.

In PvP, they going to die A LOT, over and over, so the trick is to not give up and keep having fun.

DW (swords)/resto used to be a semi-viable (pre-enchant nerf) option for magblade, if he would be running torug's pact, but the changes to destro-staves now makes them a no-brainer- a flame staff (+8% s/t damage) would also help keep his enemies at bay with destructive reach if he's playing range the majority of the time. *ranged Magblades are also (currently) completely disabled against DKs popping wings- unless he spams force shock*

Sub-50 pvp and BGs are the WORST. THE WORST. They'll get face stomped by all the WWs and higher level characters running Sload's. They should know right off the bat that that's NOT what bgs are actually like at 50/160.
If they do go to cyrodiil, one of them should backbar Rapid Maneuver. -they should also start saving and using their AP on useful (hard to get) Monster Helms and gold jewelry. *gold jewelry isn't a deal breaker- but it gives them a very minor boost*

160 heavy gear sets are usually Seventh, Fury, or Shackle Breaker (flat stats: wing spamming- petrify- spiked armor- obsidian shield.) Mostly impen, with 3 or so well-fitted small pieces (if they go no-cp/heavy gear)

    Those are the basics.

Sub-50 pvp/BGs are the WORST and not indicative of end game
