Why do people like the dark elves/dunmer?

Honest question here. Personally I’ve never been able to stand them. Their homeland looks cool but the slavery thing bugs me big time. They’re definitely last place for me in terms of the races of Tamriel, so why are they first for a lot of people? Would really love to know <3

Well you have to remember that there are exceptions to everything in the Elder Scrolls. During the time of ESO and I believe after that as well, the majority of slaves belonged to either House Dres or House Telvanni. The other three house tended to use slavery much less has the former two. Dres used slaves primarily for cultivating foodstuffs while IMO the Telvanni were just lazy af and had them for s*** and giggles.

Plus it also helps that Dunmer are still among the top dogs for dps. Top 3 for mag, top 2 for stam

They have a rich and, imo, quite interesting history, their homeland is awesome, and a well designed dunmer can actually look really nice. It is rather difficult to make one that doesn’t look pissed off 24/7 in this game though.

Their Lore and culture which somehow just as the Dwemer is more attractive that the Altmer/Bosmer lore.
The way they look make them more exotic that the rest of the Mer.
They are tough as warriors and arcane masters
    Their architecture.

For d&ders, there's an immediate association with drow.

There's a psychology behind it. Dunmer are the outsiders; they're superficially alien enough to not be human, but not so much to be beyond human.

Elven lifespan means a retainability where the same characters are playable in all tes games.

Their history is the most fantasy fare unique.

Up until recently, the best magicka race for dps.

Resting *** face is an awesome look. They generally look cool.

I'm not actually a big dunmer fan but with them being natural arseholes and all, its fun to play a more grey character sometimes.

    Ha. Ha. Grey Character.

Playing your character the way your character should play is all that matters. Play as well as you can but never betray the character. Doing so would make playing an mmoRPG pointless.

"Three voices as one shouted blood for the pact."

I guess I like their background, their history. With the Nords and Argonians they defeated the Akaviri. Back when they fought together as equals. Today's Dunmer with the slavery, I'm against yes. Sooo perhaps one could say we make Dunmer characters who don't participate in slavery to be an example. Or to honor their history. Besides Naryu is awesome.

I like my badass fire sorcerer from volcano land. B)

I love their looks, just hate their ears... Their ears kill it for me. Instead of Night / Blood Elf / Troll Sword Ears that infest WoW. Dunmers have Bent Floppy Tin Knife Ears

Give them something similar to the Bosmer style ears, and I'll race change quickly.

    I'm not super into them.

I played one in Morrowind single player only because they had waaaaaaaay more cosmetic options than other race. Presumably because the game being set in Vvardenfell and most of the NPCs being dunmer they had to create more variety for the NPCs and player dunmer got to benefit from that.

Well actually I copy pasted them into a new custom race and tweaked their height to altmer level. I like being tall. But looked entirely dunmer.

In ESO I made a few dunmer wardens but haven't played any of my wardens much. Though at the moment I'm trying to decide a) whether go back to my original main and b) if I should race change him. I am considering dunmer.

    Pros:

Tattoos tend to look much better on their dark skin. Especially psijic.

Their new racials are among the better ones.

Sorcerer kind of makes more sense for a dunmer, I think. With their earlier reverence of the three "good" daedra. And in terms of colour the twilight, scamp and clanfear go nicely with dunmer cos Azura cursed them to look daedric.

Playing around with outfits and costumes it seems like some Morrowind styles looks better on them and some of those are nice.
Their homeland looks cool but the slavery thing bugs me big time. They’re definitely last place for me in terms of the races of Tamriel

As others have pointed out slavery isn't universally practiced and accepted by all dunmer or institutions.

Altmer also practiced slavery. Dunmer didn't invent it.

Spend some time reading the lore for each race. They've all done some horrible *** at some point in their history. The bosmer are probably the least offensive because their whole culture / religion revolves around one thing : protecting Valenwood.

My male dunmer are sexier than both my bosmer and altmer.

There's one sweet spot for bosmer which looks good, but I wouldn't call it sexy. More cute and adorable. Like a puppy.

Altmer I can get looking good but again I wouldn't call it sexy.

My introduction to the Dunmer was with TESIII Morrowind, and by then slavery had been largely abolished. And even though the Telvanni mostly held on to these traditions, there were some within the House who, IIRC, did not approve of those conservative attitudes. Master Aryon, most notably.

So they’re not all awful, and their history is very interesting.

The uniqueness of their culture, especially since it was well fleshed out in TESIII. It has it's own look, architecture and pretty original and strange lore. It's like nothing we know. Compare that to other races and their cultures, their clothes and architecture. You can see clear parallels to real world cultures and literature:
    - Imperial - Roman,
    - Redguard - Arabic,
    - Khajiit - also a bit arabic with maybe a taste of Romani (Gypsy),
    - Nord - Vikings, Northern Kingdoms,
    - Breton - French and English, classic fantasy look,
    - Argonian - Tribal, Aztec,
    - Bosmer - classic wood elves to most extent,
    - Altmer - classic tolkienesque elves,
    - Akaviri - Asian, Japaneese.

Of course each of the above has it's own flavor and nuance but they mostly fit into what we know, be it real culture or literature, especially in regards to looks. Now try to classify Dunmer like that, with their strange homeland, crab shell or mushroom architecture, strange religion and uncommon artstyle. See? That's why they're popular.

And according to some poll in other thread most people started their TES experience with with TESIII Morrowind, so nostalgia, I guess. ;)

    EDIT: Correcting mistakes, as always.

You would really love to know why people choose to play as an elf that enjoys enslaving other races?

What could you achieve with this knowledge?

ALL human progress has been achieved by a few humans exploiting masses of other humans to achieve their goals.

    Slavery exists today.

If you're unhappy with the dunmer racial outline, don't play them.

You play an interesting game with your quest. Goodbye and poor luck to you.
