Stealing mudcrab apples

✭Twice this year I've been spotted stealing the apples (despite my hidden indicator lying to me about how I wasn't being seen), and attacked. Killing the attacker(s) has cost me big bounties.

✭✭After failing abysmally in previous years (nothing like skimming through a thread and seeing that you made a comment about this is 2017 - what am I doing with my life??!!! 🤣🤣🤣) first time I did it this year on my khajiit NB worked fine. In stealth then cloaked as nicked the apples - all good.
Sadly haven’t been able to repeat this so just pay the fine & make sure have no other stolen stuff just in case.0 -

✭So after finishing this quest successfully with the Princess Rescuer achievement on all 15 of my alts, and having done them all by boldly stealing the apple and playing the 138 g fine to any old guard in town, I was starting to think the posts of the guards taking your apple was phoney baloney. … Until I had my first apple taken today.
So the prevailing theory on why that happens seems to be if you had other stolen inventory at the time. I believe that to be false as half of my characters were holding a few random stolen trinkets and my apples were never before confiscated with the other ill-gained loot.
I've got a different theory on what's happening there based off of the only thing I did differently this time. Usually after stealing the apple, I'll bump into any old guard in town to pay my fine. I like to do this before attempting the rescue so that we're not interrupted while trying to escape the butcher. This one time, I was stopped by a guard who is immediately outside the place where you steal the apple. I actually had no clue he was there as I'd never run into him before. So here's my theory as to why it happens... it depends on which guards stop you. Guards in town obviously don't care a flip about stolen mudcrab apples, only the one guard right outside town where they are kept does.PC NA @Ertosi♠♦ My Team ♥♣

✭✭✭✭✭I've successfully stolen them without being detected at least twice-- last year and last night. When I did it last night, at first I was thinking I'd gotten lucky about where to crouch, but then noticed a bunch of dead bodies lying around. Tonight I'll try the "crouch at the far end of the cart" suggestion.
My guess is that it's by design and not a "bug" as many people think. And there are plenty of other places in the game where you can't successfully steal something without being detected unless you wait for two or more NPCs to be positioned just so in their loops. It's like each NPC's loop has a different timer such that they don't always mesh in just the right way, so if you miss your opportunity then you might need to wait patiently for a little while until the sweet spots in the different loops come back around and coincide with each other.I've fought mudcrabs more fearsome than me!0 -

Three years of this. I just prime all my chars by stealing the apples and relogging to the next. By the time I'm back to number one, bounty is gone.0 -

This year I haven't been seen once. 3 days in a row I haven't been caught, even when attempting on multiple characters.Xbone/NA0 -
