    It break immersion, so, sure.
But that not the worst. The worst are all those neon flashy mount / skin who just don't make sense in a game like this.
But it's a game, you can't force them to not do this and it's a good income for ZoS.
And if you wanna play, ZoS need income, so I deal with it.

Lore breaking names don't bother me
I almost always give my characters lore friendly names, or at least once which aren't obviously lore breaking. Even my silly names tend to loosely fit the naming schemes, like my temporary Argonian DK from the Undaunted event: Ports-to-Fungal-Grotto.

But it doesn't bother me if other people have silly names and some I actually find amusing, especially if it's a reference to something else.

Maybe it helps that I keep name plates turned off so I only see the name if I target them and I rarely bother to target other players and read their names at times when I'm immersed in the game. And if you're in a group who aren't all role-players and staying in character it's pretty impossible not to think of it as a game because of the way people talk about it.

Same as others, I think it looks ridiculous and immersion breaking with some of these names. However, I am not much bothered by it in-game as I spend most of that time focusing on my own stuff.

Having that said, there were an instance (not in this game, in LotRO) where I came across an Elf Hunter/Archer called "Bowsbeforehoes". I loved that name so much I actually sent him a message, congratulating him on the most awesome name I've seen in a game.

Come on guys naming rules are draconian and moronic and limit real creativity and imagination. plenty of good names which could easily be "lore friendly' wouldnt be considered such by the stupid computer overlord deciding.

This much is true. Such a system would have to be very flexible and I think it would require constant tuning. I can't see it as being anything but a continual resource drain.
I must create a new Argonian called Could-Not-Care-Less tonight

I have to admit, you would get the phrase right!

This is me. Except on PTS. I don't waste my time on PTS trying to be lore friendly. First name that comes to mind, which could just be "Bald Guy" or "Long Hair"

So much this. I really do t care how people call their toons because I'm not forced to read them, but those flashy anime like mounts... It's so bad... At the beginning those mounts were extremely exclusive and unique, but now when everyone ride on shiny and sparkling mounts whats the point of them? Most of them don't even fit to outfits/costumes of their owners... Cities became freak shows.

To clarify my earlier response, it's the names like PwnzCareBears9000 or NoobDestroyaah2 that I dismiss as dumb.

I do sometimes get a chuckle at attempts to be at least lore-adjacent, though; say, an Argonian named Luggage-in-Training.

It does rather depend what you consider lore-breaking. XXXGoldhunter4200XX is obviously idiotic (some people have cruel parents) but what about having a character called Delia Jones? It's not Tamrielic, but it is a sensible name.

I have half a notion to make an Argonian just for the fun of creating a suitable name, but the best I have thought of so far is Trips-over-Ankles.

Your whole premise is based on the notion that all players have an insight into ESO lore when they are creating their characters.

Given this is the first thing that most players do in ESO, it is unrealistic to imagine that most will have any idea of the lore. Indeed it is much more likely that their character names will conform to their RL gaming identities than to any part of ESO.

By the time they become aware of much ESO lore it is way too late to do anything about it.

Additionally, ZOS’s penchant for charging stupid money for simply changing a character’s name makes resolving this even more unlikely.

On the plus side, I haven’t found that weird character names have had any negative impact on my immersion into the game and it’s lore. Although I do worry that some of the weird character names might have been mine.

Don't care what people call their characters.

At least one of these in every game I play. Normally warlocks, failing that, mages, etc.

It's a game, and players have preferred names for their characters, for whatever reasons.

    Game on.

I would welcome more lore-friendly names but find them much harder to remember. They are nothing but a bunch of syllables with no meaning to me. If I made up such a name I'd be worried all the time about what it might mean in our language... Seriously though, it's just easier to refer to a character as "Wilbur" or "the Sarge", so for practical reasons I stick with "joke" names.

Don’t think it’s your or my or anybodies place to tell them too though. It’s they’re characters they can name them whatever they want, if that breaks anybodies immersion, well tough luck.

People have personal and sentimental reasons sometimes for the name of their character.

May not be lore abiding but it's their character.

Lore breaking names don't bother me
I'm just wondering what people consider lore-friendly names. For example there's plenty joke Argonian names but are they not lore friendly in every case? There's plenty of on the nose Argonian names among the NPCs, thief called Walks-Softly comes to mind due to ongoing event. Some not-so-lore-friendly can be explained with a backstory for example. I for one like making up little backstories for my characters, I treat them as characters in books or film that I observe, I also like to make little references to other things with their names, be it some NPCs from previous TES games that I liked or generally other media. I currently have four characters, can you tell me whether you consider them lore-friendly or lore-breaking?

      So here they go:
      - Elbereth Elf-Born - Nord female with Dunmer father,
      - Dranos Athrys - Dunmer male
      - Wears-Women's-Clothing - Argonian performer and drag queen,
      - Detritus Fortesque - one-eyed Breton Knight.

What do you think of them?

I've seen a lot of people giving examples of bad names which include numbers. I realise at least some of these are probably just random examples of something which is obviously not a real name, but if you're actually seeing names like that in-game you might want to check your UI settings, because you can't put numbers into character names, but you can put them in account names.

Go to Settings > Interface and look for Display Name (on PC it's the first option) and make sure it's set to 'Prefer Character Name', otherwise what you'll see as their name is actually their account name, which is much less likely to be lore friendly (especially on consoles where its their gamer tag and has to be used across all games).

On PC you can then use addons like Azurah to hide the account name completely, so you only see the character name. It won't totally fix the problem but it will eliminate a lot of 'inappropriate' names.
