I think it comes down to this. If you can't survive using utility sets, then wear selfish sets. A dead tank is of no use.

For helm sets, my personal favorite is Earthgore as tank.

My new default-to-go monster set since Wrathstone arrived is stonekeeper. It is simply too awesome to pass on. I'm utterly surprised that only so few tanks so far have adapted yet. It will take again until Woeler 'discovers' it for the whole meta train to recognize the phenomenal power of this monster set.

also Ebon+Mighty glacier is something I like to run now as offtank role in trials or in dungeons. Basically awesome survivability support for the entire trial/dungeon group, providing not only the ebon health buff but also a permanent Mighty Chudan buff.

A lot of tanks is already running with it though, neat set :) It's pretty conditional though, not all fights are very block intense, which will make the amount of resources per second smaller. And since most tanks had no big resource management problem before this set arrived, you might still get more out of a utility set.

Still nice to get a new tank monster set, was some time ago.

Yep, I love Mighty glacier too, decent stats for tank and great protection for group. And what's cool it procs even on engulfing flames so no need to use claws to proc it when there is nobody to claw.

I never did this particular trial before, but I've done CR so I"m wearing Galenwe gear. I'm one of the tanks.

Midway through the trial some guy /whispers me: What gear you wearing? I say: Galenwe, Ebon, MC (mighty chudan).
They say: Oh, you're the luckiest tank ever.

    I'm like ok, what?

So is this OP gear? Doesn't seem like it on my tank, I'll say.

Your build is not OP and even hardly used by any good tanks.

    Meta is same from ages,

Ebon + Alkosh + lord warden/ 2 x Magicka Recovery or Blood Spawn

ZOS failed in giving any other competitive set from years.

Thats meta for doing leaderboards in trials. Dungeons, arenas, pvp or playing solo offer much more variety when it come to choosing meta set for a tank.

For example Swarm Mother is interesting alternative for any perma block tank (especialy other class than DK).

Trollking will be awesome on Warden tank as basicly it gives +1500hp recovery for your group in "oh s.." situations. I find it more valuable than flat ressistance which feels kinda overrated in PVE (as its easy to achieve 25k ressistance on light armored characters which is not that far from cap) - especialy with +1.8k HP from Warden's passive. Basicly you can turn your Warden tank to a secondary healer ;-)

    Etc etc

our tank wears warden+ebon+mighty glacier when we do the full avs of the dlc dungeons. alkosh is useless there.

You can stay alive fine with Alkosh, Ebon/dragon, EG/Warden/BS/2 1 pc just fine in any trial. Why would you want to be over tanky and not add more to the DPS so you can deal with less mechanics? While you can be over tanky and still take content down you will find it hard to push scores. To each its own though. Nothing wrong with doing what works for you

I usually main as a tank, and I'm not too fond of meta sets.. all the time. The only one I generally agree with is ebon for the group buff., so here's my setup, which I'm still editing currently as I play.

    Nord DK S/B / Frost

    38k Health unbuffed, 46k buffed.

    18k Stamina buffed, 11k mag.

30k Resistances (Bump to 35K+ with Volatile armor)

    Running these sets:

Ebon ; Grievous Leeching Plate. (Selfish, but really helps if the healer if a bit spastic.) and Infernal Guardian. (Note, I'm currently lower CP. I CAN replace this, but it makes a lot of overworld content a lot faster if I wish to quest/etc.)

Even with that setup, I'm pretty OP. Grievous has a set ability to restore health upon taking damage and it happens to proc a lot being a tank. (Who could've guessed!)

As for it's viability, I have yet to trial with it. (Working on getting lord warden, for the group buffs.)

I still can do veteran # 2 dungeons with relative ease, and have done Vet DLC on this exact build. Grievous isn't a clutch for a bad healer in any regard, but if you have one you really notice the help. If not, the set bonus does do a bit of poison damage otherwise. So it's not too bad IMO.

I run Ebon as a standard base set and then pair it with Alkosh if there is a mag sorc, dragon guard if not although I'm switching it with werewolf hide as it is better ult gen. For monster sets I used to exclusively use warden but now I've switched to stonekeeper. With 7 heavy and nord chudan is just overkill with resistances. On a dk you are going to be well over cap in spell resist when using a set like chudan.
