What are examples of games with balanced Pvp?

Good old Dragon Nest was the greatest pvp game for me.
Good game balance (not perfect) and awesome combat meca, combo and smooth as hell.
Probably the most skilled mmorpg I've played.
But it's was the only good thing on this game sadly, not enough content..
(Oh, don't try it now, it's dead, they've broke the balance with new stupid brain-dead class)

    Planetside 2

When everyone's weapons do roughly the same damage, even new players can defeat seasoned vets whove unlocked all the flash and glamour.

Planetside 2 has its own problems like class balance or faction locked weapons/vehicles. New players lack weapon-vehicle attachments, medkits, grenades, nanoweave armor, implants, c4-landmines etc... Its a massive farming to catch up. And I won't even begin with the class balance, heavy assault above everything else.

Class balance doesnt matter if youre an NC with a Shotgun. ;)

But yeah some unlockables are pretty required for standard play such as c-4 bricks, AI mines, AT mines etc. But when it comes down to the nitty gritty PvP its still much closer in balance than ESO. Everyone does the same damage range and everyone has the same health range.

I'm a Terran light assault/heavy assault main. I guess I'm too classy to use shotguns anyways :)

All jokes aside I agree Planetside 2 is many times better than ESO when it comes to getting the AvA combat right, not to mention its an asymetrical game meaning each faction is unique , but as I said earlier they didn't quite get it right, NC and their 200 damage low rpm guns are way too good under laggy enviroment making NC the best zerg faction. ( If you don't know , low fps causes problems with high RPM guns meaning those fancy 900 RPM terran guns are basically worthless peashooters in zergy fights)

However all the balance problems aside, there is one good thing about Planetside 2 that prevents zergs from turning their brain off ; friendly fire. Meaning they can't just mindlessly spam explosives and yada yada. And even healing/repairing requires you to aim(something ESO really needs), so even the support roles need to be awake and can't go AFK point farming.

How about this - ESO trying a Fortnite kind of thing?

    - Load up a map with 100 people; call it a "skirmish". No grouping allowed.
    - Everyone has a blank inventory, no CP and no skills; all HP/MP/SP set to some flat number.
    - The map has chests that spawn, which may or may not give set pieces.
    - You go around collecting gear pieces until you think you're ready to roll, at which point you hunt down other players.
    - If you kill them, you get to loot them, meaning you get any gear pieces they're carrying.
    - Use your collected gear pieces to get more set bonuses up to full 5-piece sets, which should give you an advantage over others.
    - Last one to survive wins.

That way it becomes less about build and more about a) the gear you find and b) how you use the gear and the environment to your advantage.

    Wow mate!!!!

Black Desert Online has something like this. They did a creative take but it still feels boring compared to Fortnite/Apex/Realm Royale/PUBG/H1Z1

edit: also I think that while games like WoW and LoL are not exactly "balanced" they are balanced enough to have competetive, high viewer, high reward esports leagues which is what I would consider an acceptable level of mmo balancing that ESO should at least try to aim for. ESO is missing out on so much money by not trying to get a little piece of the esports pie.

Up to this day I consider Starcraft Broodwar the most balanced PvP game not relying on equivalent units/skills for each race. A role model for counter based balance and skill based gameplay.

I still dont fully understand whether those oldschool developers were simply that much better or just had more freedom in development due to the industry being not mainstream cash milking machine.

    Probably a mix of both.

I was going to say this! It took them long years to achieve that, though... patch after patch of tweaking and retweaking... still, to this day I'd put Starcraft Broodwar as an example of balance that kept increasing with the attempts, instead of what is done in most other games.

I'm sure someone had already mentioned it and will be surprised if not.
Baseball, hockey, football, or any Olympic event.
You will notices that all of those will have player follow the same rule in their respective game with player pretty much using the same equipment. You will never see an archer going against a karate fighter, as fun as it may sounds, in Olympic. Which is kind of the ridiculous situation we are in right now.

Its more like putting athletes who train exclusively for one sport up against someone who trains for multiple sports.

Or a world class sprint against someone doing the decathlon.

Some of this "Balance" comes from the decision of "Am I going to make a specialized build which is good at doing this one thing really well and bad at other things? Or do I make a general build that can do most things well, but none as good as a specialized build would?"

Which build outperforms the other depends a lot on individual playstyle in PVP. If a player likes one particular playstyle, it makes sense to go all in on bomber, ganker, 1vXer, or a group support build anf to accept the weaknesses/hard counters along with the strengths. But for players who like a more general playstyle that's adaptable to any type of PVP situation, it makes sense to aim for a "Jack of all Trades, master of none" type build that's less vulnerable to a build that exactly counters it.
