Get best in slot for professional lifetime thievery, and you can sneak around anywhere in the game with a permanent bounty on your character. The guards will never catch you. Ever. The only times my professional theif dies to guards is due to lag/disconnects. You too can learn. Question is, do you want to?

This is true. I have five characters with Black Market Mogul many times over, and haven't died to a guard's damage in well over 18 months. Granted, it's gotten a bit more challenging since they removed the root breaking component of Rapid Maneuvers, but you can still roll dodge out of any chains or root. And I NEVER steal inside a room with a door and a guard, lol. It's possible to stun them and cloak, but it's too risky.

The last time I lost my loot was running from a guard when Summerset first came out and I didn't know my way around Alinor very well and ran off a cliff and died (with a 600k stolen purple plan in my inventory!) So self inflicted death still counts if you have aggro from a guard..... even if he/she never even touches you.

Yup... you learn a few things about how to do things when you practice. Lantern guards are bad news compared to the others, but still quite manageable. One of the best things to do is have nameplates on so hostiles always show. If you have a high bounty, it makes guards that much easier to spot. From there, it’s all about speed. Fast = out of root/chain range and shortlya after out of tether range.

I love water.... It doesn't only work for guards when you're in thief mode and hot. I can use water to get away from any mobs any time. With my ping.... works for me!

I log on today, no bounty because the small bounty I had faded over night. Woo! Great, right? I finish off the thieving quest that had spurred this stealing spree in the first place with a bounty of around 1.2k that had eventually faded to like 900 something by the time I got near the sneaky-stealy guild house in Hew's and I'm nearly home free.. then.. a gosh darn lantern guard. Not just any, oh no. This is the freakin' T-1000 of lantern guards.

    This part makes no sense.

    1. Did you have a bounty or not? You start your statement with I log in, no bounty. Then in the next sentance , you have a bounty of 900. What am I missing?
    2. Why were you sneaking around Hew's Bane with a bounty? Always run from the wayshrine to the outside entrance of the thieve's guild. Those lantern guards are rough.

As for 1, I didn't put it too well, someone on pg 1 said it, but I'll confirm it. I logged on without a bounty then I went and finished the thieving quest and had a bounty once more that had finished it. The new bounty slowly faded over the time it took me to stop stealing and then travel near the guild's entrance.

2 has already been addressed so I won't echo what someone said previously.

And a 95% chance of success translates to more like a 60% rate of success. And I've definitely got a large enough sample size to be sure something's not right.

Guards use to take my loot, I stole from all those murdering thieving races in the game. So, I made a Magicka Night Blade and now I just vanish in front of a guard/lantern guard and off I go with my ever growing bounty and loot.

I've been told and read in numerous pieces of information that in PVE you never bother with Crit defenses because the NPCs don't use Crit attacks.

How is it you got Crit attacked by an NPC?

And as an aside, me personally, I detest bounties. I wipe em out 10 seconds after I get one.

Sounds like thats your problem, using moves that arent heals, lol

we have all been there, losing a sack full of loot. Hews bane is a good place to steal from once you know the in's and out's of the place. Also you get a skill that allows you to pacify the guard and requires no money.

Really wish they would tone the guards down or make them more dynamic. I get you want don't want lawlessness ZoS with one player killing every guard in cities. But to make them immortal is just as ridiculous in my opinion.

I would suggest for a dynamic is to make the guards killable but then spawn stronger guards to more you kill like in GTA 5.

EDIT to add: And she doesn't launder either. Only fence.

Yeah, if she was just a fence, but without the horrific cut, she'd be really nice. We lose out on Laundering, and being able to buy off our bounty, so we'd still need to hoof it back to the refuges from time to time.

At 35% though... just, ouch. Now, with a 35% cut, she'd be worth using if she had a seperate fence limit, distinct from the actual fences. So, you fill up your full price limit, then decide to take a hit to sell more stuff. That'd be worthwhile. But, as is, I think I've sold two things to her since she was added. And both of those were when I had addons that were bugged and wouldn't let me destroy items, and I couldn't be bothered to zone into the refuge to crush them. (I think it was a recipe and a lockpick.)

It does heal, sorta! Blue betty itself removes one negative effect, however with one of the passives from the summoning line, Bond With Nature, it also heals "when one of your animal companions is killed or unsummoned, you are restored Health." Since casting BB then recasting it right after counts as "unsummoning" becuase you're summoning a new one and you can only have one at a time this means that every time after the first time you cast BB you're also healing as well as removing a negative effect.

    How to thieve 101:

    1) Pick a spot/route with no guards. I prefer buildings where i can also pick pick stab and they tend to have a lot of stuff in a small area.
    2) After you run your route, log out and back in to reset loot containers.
    3) Repeat step 2 until you have your daily fill or are bored.
    4) If you do not have a bounty run to way shrine( also if youre cheap). If you have a bounty port to Abah's Landing.
    5) Take an immediate left off the wayshrine platform. Stay clear of directly across from the horse trainer. A guard sits on the column near there. Go in the sewer grate on the outside of the wall.
    6) Fence and Profit.

There are a few places you can port that give you relatively quick access to a refuge, but the thieves guild in hew's bane is the less loading and less running for me. Getting the Clemency skill is a really good idea. It basically gives you a " get out of jail for free" card once a day so you dont lose loot if you run into a guard.

That does sound rage inducing. I had a similar experience when I first started to steal items in the game.

Now I tend to keep some invisibility potions on me, they are a life saver! If you get into a sticky situation with a guard and you feel you might end up dying, swig a invisibility potion and it's a easy get away. Well worth the herbs to make them!

This is the solution. My character of 5 years is an assassin/thief archtype and i never leave the house without invisibility potions and plenty of skooma.

    I can top that.

Before they put the Morrowind plans on the writ voucher lottery, I accidentally sold a Telvanni Organic Throne plan (of which I had sold another previously for 750k)... to a fence. And of course, you can't buy back from fences.

    I was not pleased! :)

The game asks if you are sure every time you try to sell purple item to fence... And, well, just to avoid this kind of risk, I usually select Misc tab, where I never had anything valuable as a stolen item, so I could just sell everything
When in doubt, find water. Guards stop chasing as soon as you start floating. For your future endeavors.

you should have mentioned that they shoot poisoned bolts at you from the beach, until you get far enough

I actually got killed once that way, when I had no armor on my char and didn't distribute any level points

You are correct. NPC's - in fact, all pve mobs - are not capable of criticals.

OP also states he was spamming Blue Betty for heals, which... grants Major Sorcery. In truth, the entirety of his rant can be boiled down to inexperience / misguided understanding of game mechanics.

As they said "bond with nature", before you assume someone does not know something, you might want to check in on passives, instead of attempting and failing at being an elitist.

Edit to add the skill and what it does

Bond With Nature II: When one of your animal companions is killed or unsummoned, you're restored 1260 Health.

Buy the Sleek Creek House in Reaper's March if you're doing a lot of stealing. It sits right beside the out-of-town entrance to the Rawl'kha outlaws refuge. You can fast travel to it from anywhere and quickly fence your loot.
