Do Heist rules change randomly?

Yesterday I did a Heist (first time ever). Took peoples advice, made a stealth 5 pc, and succeeded. I distinctly remember at one point, after obtaining the first item, popping up my map to decide on my route to the other 2 items.

Today I tried the Heist. Got the Sepulchre one. I noticed from the get go the map showed only one location. OK, figured yu get one the next one pops up. I got the first item. My count shows 1/3. I pop up my map - I get a message "Heist completed" ( or something like that ) - No more locations show as to where the other two items are, I am still at 1/3, and the clock is still running.

wtf?

My only option was to go back, still within the time frame, and abandon the quest. Which I did. Son on to round two.

This time I got the first item, and as soon as the chest opened I got the Heist completed message, my count was still 0 / 3 even tho I got the first one. And of course, theres nothing on the map even though the clock is running. Back to the entrance and abandon again.

what happened between yesterday and today?

There are 5 different Heist locations and each has a different objective:

    Deadhollow Halls
    - Find three Daedric idols

    Glittering Grotto
    - Find seven pouches of rare gemstones

    Secluded Sewers
    - Find the treasure and three hidden caches

    The Hideaway
    - Find the treasure and hidden caches

    Underground Sepulcher
    - Find the treasure and hidden caches

I'm guessing your first heist was Deadhollow Halls which just requires 3 items all marked with circles on the map. The Hidden Caches in other heists are marked with quest pointers on your compass but not on your map.

Pretty much this. The gemstones won't be appearing on your map, but will be marked with the white arrow if you're near them, while the caches will be marked on your compass when near them.

Sooooo... you just bumble around hoping to find the caches (which, if this is your first time, you dont even know what they look like) in the allotted time? Oh, that's a well thought out system.

Yes, the first time you can bumble around. Heck, you can be a bull in a china shop, kill everybody and learn every corner of the map with no concern about time. Then delete the quest, pick it up again and do it correctly.

I feel like most people may get an idea after seeing it for the first time round. Think about it, how did you get the first 1/3 hidden caches completed? Did you open up a brown chest or something like that?

And as said, they will appear on the compass when you're close to them, so it's not like you are "Bumbling around" without a single lead (Plus they are marked with white arrows so they at least give you some indication of their existence)

There are certain specific places where they can spawn. With a little bit of practice you learn the possible spawn points & you'll come up with an efficient route that'll see you easily getting all of your objectives under the time limit every time.

Because of the event I just did a guide to heists and sacraments that talks about the ins and outs of how they work, and how to set yourself up for success doing them. I've only got a walkthrough of 1 of the 5 different heist locations in the video, but if enough people are interested I may do another video with walkthroughs of all of them so people can see the routes I usually take and where I look for objectives (and in some cases where I skip past possible objective locations because it's not worth trying to go after them).

    https://youtu.be/kVix-GxLjcA

Edit: it's a long video, but in the description on Youtube I've got timestamps so you can skip ahead to whatever part of it may interest you.

As a long-time runner of Heists I can tell that something is fishy. Last night I got Deadhollow Halls. My favorite. You can do it with zero sneaky gear/consumables so long as you know where to sneak, where to run, where to stand, and what to wait for. Chests are always on the same spot. Always. I've run this dozens of times.

Until yesterday when they were not. There was a chest is the very first room. I had never, ever seen a chest there, and I've been running these practically since they came out.

They may have changed something for the event.

I also had some trouble today with the Sepulchre. The side objectives were not spawning. Only after I got the main chest open and crossed some secret passages did the side quest markers pop up. Very odd.

I've seen a chest there plenty of times, going back to when Thieves Guild first came out. In my experience it's the least common chest spawn point in that heist, but there are 4 possible chest spawn points (for the 3 chests) and that's one of them.

Actually, I found what looked like a small chest with a white triangle and opened it. it went to 1/3. I ended up abandoning the quest, so on the second attempt I went straight to that chest and opened it. This time it said 0/3.

Sooo, you tell me. What will I get the third time I try it? 8)

EDIT: That chest was the only thing I found and/or opened on either attempt

Also, in some areas, especially sacrements, there's secret passages that aren't shown on the map. I can't remember if heists were the same way. I used to have all of the maps memorized when they first came out...

There are a couple of spots on some of the heist maps that are secret areas that you don't see on the map until you're in them. In a couple of cases it's largely because they're on a lower level.

Did the chest have a white quest marker over it when you opened it the 2nd time? It's random which of the objective spawn points is actually an objective on any given heist attempt, so it's possible that it wasn't a valid objective that time. Or it may have simply not properly reset the instance between when you abandoned the heist and re-started it. Sometimes it takes a while for it to reset, but you can probably relog to force it to reset.

OK, my final thought on this, after doing it again, taking 25 minutes, killing a couple npcs, and after getting the final chest, 3, count them, Three NPCs all came over and blocked the exit. One was a name NPC. I would have backed down the stairs, but an NPC was there too. So the 3 of them moved toward me and saw me, I ran thru them to the exit, got killed, gemmed, turned in the heist, got my ticket.

But if Zos thinks this is fun, and Zos thinks I will EVER play this DLC and do these Heists (apart from getting tickets for the indrik), somebody needs an extended vacation. The vast majority of quests in this game, you can look at your map and at least see a marker for the direction you need to go. And that is Without a timer.

To put this stuff on a Timer, and then Not mark the locations to give players a chance to complete them, is just wrong. Same with the Quen quest to Sulima mansion. Quen tells you - "I dont know what we are looking for". And you check your map, and its Blank. You have no idea where to go, what to do, or even if you are anywhere near the right area you need to be in, or even on the right floor. It's just stupid. (IMHO)

I agree. I've been doing these dailies for the event tickets, and I've quickly learned that I hate these quests. So I just go in and kill everyone.
