I do agree an absolute newcomer might be better to start with the old intro lore vice. But I understand Coldharbour is ment to be a bleak and depressing place and for me it really is a great success in that.
When I tried to get into ESO first time in 2015 Wailing Prison -> Bleakrock Island -> Bal Foyen -> start of Stonefalls bored me to tears. I of course tried to wander off from the depressing areas but I think zone scaling was not implemented yet and so I got squished and gave up. I would not recommend a new player to follow that particular path. It is fine when one has already experienced other zones but as first impression, nope.
The best way they could go about doing this would be to allow the player the CHOICE of where they want to start. Instead of that "skipping the tutorial" message that you get after you do it once it should have options something like this.
Where do you want this character to start:
- At your faction (recommended for new players, for linear story progression)
- Morrowind
- Summerset
- Elseweyr
The first character on the account (or until the first tutorial is complete) should always start at the base game.
Why are they starting new players at the END of the story? A lot of us play mainly for the story arc. I actually see a LOT of players in the chat box who are new to the game, and they are really confused because the game drops them into basically the end of the game first. People are constantly asking how to start the main story line because IT ISN'T CLEAR at all. I agree with others, that when starting a new game the player should be given a choice such as:
(*) Select to begin a new game in MAIN QUESTLINE mode. Your character will start at the beginning of the story.
( ) Select to begin a new game in [LATEST VERSION] Your character will skip the main story, but may begin it at any time by traveling to [Character's starting zone]
