PSA: Turn off "Sleep: on PCs for tomorrows long load screen for Windowed Full Screen settings

Edit: if you are windowed full screen, or just windowed, this is very much applicable. If you are just plain full screen then you may not have an issue. Changing game settings to Full Screen, not windowed may have the same effect though you may want to turn your monitor off if you will not be using the PC.

As most of us know, after tomorrows PC update we will all experience an extremely long load screen the first time we log into a character. The issue is the default settings for our PCs will likely put the PC to sleep early in this process if the PC is left unattended.

Below are brief instructions to turn off sleep if you plan to walk away from your PC during this process.

To disable sleep in W10:
  1. In search bar type "Power" without the quotations and select "Power & sleep settings"
  2. Where you see the toggle for Sleep change it to "never"
  3. If you are on a notebook there may be additional settings for both plugged in and on battery.

Google is also your friend in these matters (or whatever your search provider of choice is as this is not an advert for Google, lol). Windows 7 and other OS are different.

Zos announcement for the extremely long load screen at first log in tomorrow.

PCs don't usually go to sleep while using a full screen application such as a game. Mine don't, at least. That'd be terrible for watching movies (as well as gaming).

Does your PC go off during playtime? No it does not.

Does your PC go off during a YT video? No it does not.

Does your PC go off during a PPT Slideshow? No it does not.

It's a default settings most of change along with getting rid of most of bloatware. You have to move mouse of interact in some way for this not to occur.

Only my monitor goes to sleep in these situations. Computer runs normally because the program is still going.

Check HD settings, as the default is 20min iirc... (under advanced power settings)

    I do, though.

Seriously, I agree... changing the PC sleep cycle is probably not necessary for most people. Pray for no power failure, though.

Movies are full screen. A great many of us play the game in Windowed Full Screen and that is different than full screen. I think it permits us to alt/tab better and I have heard there is a performance effect.

Since the monitor will turn off without activity it makes sense that the PC will go to sleep.

I know for a fact the monitor will turn off without activity even though the game is still active as I have set a character to refine almost 20k material and left. The monitor had turned off while I was away even though the game was still playing as my PC is set to never sleep.

Since the monitor will turn off even though the game is still actively running and playing then the PC would have done to sleep if those settings were not turned off.

Edit: I have edited the OP to clarify that this specifically applies to windowed full screen settings. Since I do not play with the full screen settings I cannot speak with certainty to if the game would still go to sleep or not. A great many players do play with Windowed Full screen.

@Billdor my PC is set to never sleep, but the monitor will turn off even if the game is active, but I am not doing inputs. Read example above that is a factual account and the specific situation.

    It's a fair heads-up.

But I also play in Windowed Fullscreen and my computer has never gone to sleep after leaving the game running with no interaction for quite a while.

Heck, even having a browser open will prevent it from sleeping, since network activity is one of the things that will prevent sleep from occurring, in addition to CPU cycles, HDD cycles and more.

Monitors going to sleep are governed fairly strictly by user input, but the entire computer sleep process is far more complex.

    3 am ET

Edit... guess it depends on what 'this' is. Patch mainenance runs from 3am to (est) 10am ET. After that, you can log in and do loading screen maintenance.

When the update is released, you download it and log into a character for the first time.

Zos tends to release a patch part way through the maintenance. Of course we have to wait for the servers to be back on before we can log in.

Even if the PC will not go to sleep if the client is active and we are logged into the game, I do not think it is worth the headache of taking that chance since I really doubt anyone here has tested it because we get logged out of the game if we are idle.

I unset all that crap when I bought this machine, just like I did with every other machine I've bought in the era of "machine smarter than human".

My monitors never sleep, my machine never sleeps, and I don't give a rat's patoot about "saving energy". I'll be sitting here for as long as it takes tomorrow, moving the mouse around and hoping the game itself doesn't decide to log me out if it's a very long time.... If it does, I'm going to be one pissed off great-grandmother.
