Why do Magicka damage dealers run 1h and shield on their damage bar?

What is the logic behind it? Coming from PvE exclusively, this just seems odd to me. I tried it but can't land light attacks to save my life.

Not everyone does, just magDKs and maybe magTemplars. Shields give full stats like chest, legs, and helm. Additional benefits for blocking and such since burst is really high in pvp with all the proc sets that hit hard.

Looking for any guildies I used to play with:
    Havoc Warhammer - Alair
LoC EQ2 - Mayi and Iskiab
PRX and Tabula Rasa - Rift - Iskiab
Or anyone else I used to play games with in guilds I’ve forgotten

Because they can't rely on sprinting and dodge rolling to survive, the same way a stamina build can. Magicka builds depend more on self healing, blocking, and positioning.

Yep, shield is really another piece of armour.
