Other than getting caught stealing or trespassing ... under what situation does this happen?

Because the only time it's an issue for me is during the New Life Festival when I need to throw mudballs at neutral NPCs.

Sounds like someone needs to do a cleaner job of leveling up the Thieves Guild ... rather than asking for wholesale game mechanic changes.

The only way I can see this happening is if you failed pick pocketing someone, which then, you were asking for it. If you're gonna do some questionable Justice System stuff, then go ahead and turn that setting off beforehand.

Yes last night I did first contract for Dark Brotherhood and when sneaking through the manor I could not fight back if bodyguards saw me. It was nuts.

The quests that have you sneaking into a restricted area. I completely forget its turned on, and I get beat on while I go to my options, and try to turn it off quickly, just so I can fight back. Are they really innocent if they are attacking you unprovoked, or at very least, unattacked?

Yeah it would be nice to have some inbetween not attacking innocents but still being able to fight back when some are attacking you.

I'm kinda glad it doesn't. I have a character who hasn't done any NPC murder, and I'm trying to keep it that way. The mechanics for trespassing wasn't exactly clear when I stumbled across them, and I could've broken that if I'd been able to do damage to the guard and they subsequently died.

I agree. The moment the NPC aggro's on you, they should be considered an enemy, not an innocent. I've only had it happen when I accidentally trespassed & some NPCs aggro'd on me. Still... it's not like they can kill you unless you just stand there for 10 minutes not defending yourself :p

Try to run Morrowind/VVardenfeld without doing SOMETHING illegal.

Though the first time I hit it I was pickpocketing. They are no longer "innocent" if they start beating on me! That is not a "big game change" that is a "let me fight back without digging around menus" change.

I DO NOT want it on all the time, especially running a pet sorc for one of my characters.

There's a CWC quest in its MQ line that requires you to steal something in a restricted area. There's an NPC seated looking right at you, and grabbing the item knocks you out of stealth. I've done this on non-stealthy characters, and I've done this on characters with passives and gear designed to make me extra-stealthy. It doesn't matter how much stealth gear and passives you have when the mechanics of the quest knock you out of stealth, though. You WILL get seen, and every time I've done it, I've gotten attacked.

It's bad enough (and it is really, really indefensibly bad game design) to put a "commit murder or get killed yourself" mechanic in Main Quest without at least having some story fallout for it. "You're trying to save the world, but you can't actually do that and keep your hands clean" is very Elder Scrolls. But it's not a scripted story beat, it's simply bad game mechanics. It should never have been allowed to go live like that. It may seem like no big deal to many of you, but to me, this is "someone should be fired over this" levels of incompetence.

Then, to this insultingly bad design decision, add the PITA of having to dig through menus just to defend myself, and you'll see why I agree 100% with the OP and and shaking my head in disappointment at those who disagree.

The NPCs do move around if it is the one that is stealing the discovered research. I just did it.

I would like to kill the questgiver however. That was not an option unfortunately.

They’re still innocent and attacking them will give you more bounty which is why you cannot attack the, if you have the prevention turned on.

easiest way to beat that was to get aggroed die and then use soul gem to rez in spot and walk in spirit form to the end...n on eaggros you then and you get what you deserve you filthy trespasser

Yes. You are an intruder on private property and they are defending it. Run away.

What? This is the easiest for a pet sorc to handle. Your hero may be inclined to flee from people they've wronged becuase they know they are innocent, but your pet has no such morality!

I keep this on and just use familiar pulse.

That's one of the reasons I haven't bothered with getting interested in doing quests on Vvardenfell and Clockwork City... the forced unavoidable law breaking interspersed in them... at any point when I reach those kind of situations, I abandon the quest and forget about the content... that's BAD design for a game that's supposedly intended to be an RPG.

I will note that I enjoyed the one "kill her" quest. I would have done her in earlier if I could have. Her boss too, but the game protects him.

Does it? Prefer running away if caught doing crimes but pretty sure then someone turn red and start attacking you can fight them.

Now remember doing the new life festival mud ball quest on an alt and turned off prevent hurting innocent.
Well its an skillpoint quest of freeing an city north in Auridon, you help dominion repel an daeric invasion.
I thought I pulled a lot of enemies felt more like an public dungeon, pretty cool.
Then I realized the AoE also hit the dominion forces so I fought them and daedra and I had an 20K bounty.
Nobody complained so turned it off finished quest and ported to Vulkhel Guard there the guards zerged me :)

Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.
