stealing borderline impossible hacking npcs

was in davons watch, in the inn and stole a thing in the basement. there was an orc moping the floors and looked straight into a wall. i was slightly to the southwest of him. when i stole the item then he teleported back without animation and turned instantly left and spotted me the exact same second that i stole. has it happened to anyone else?

✭✭✭✭That is super strange. I've had NPC animations and LoS be inconsistent before though. Perhaps it is my ping or some form of server lag, but there will definitely be times when an NPC spots me a heartbeat before they turn.
If it's giving you trouble, I suggest invisibility potions, cloak, or porting to someone/someplace if a guard has yet to accost you in a building.

✭Oh well, there is this one stupid thief guild chest... out in the wild, with no-one around. If you loot it, you are spotted for sure.

I put it down to LAG, of which I have an abundance these days.

Same, I think lag can mess up stealing/pickpocketing...I have had this happen a few times. Not specifically with the NPC you mention.
I put it down to LAG, of which I have an abundance these days.
It occasionally happens that I'm behind a lone NPC with 100% pickpocket chance, and the moment I press steal, they are already attacking me and I have a bounty for failed pickpocketing... perhaps the pickpocket chance went from the green increased 100% value back to its normal non-100 value in the split second that I pressed steal, or they just so happened to do a 180 turn the exact moment I pressed steal (even though you can't steal if they are facing you)... so eh, weird. If you're stealing just kill everyone beforehand like others mentioned
