I swear guard I was just trying to talk to the guild trader....honestly! What were you thinking ESO, why would you put loose items directly beside or behind guild traders and merchants and make them so easy to mistakenly steal.

Back in the beginning, everything in the world was a static. And the world did not look that good for some odd reason. So, ZOS changed it. And, now, like in Sentinal or Belkarth, we can grab things by accident.

What really helps is to look up at the NPCs head and activate that. Except you still have to be careful in Sentinal. Those stalls have hanging items. However everywhere else, I stopped committing crimes by accident by looking the NPC in the eyes.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

I like stealing from merchants. Some of the things I found in containers around them are quite good.

Good advice. And go a little slower.

I think I have auto loot off for stolen items and just do not rush. I have not accidently stolen while at traders in ages.

How it is currently setup that OP is having issues with is a traditional TES issue. I remember in Skyrim accidently stealing something and the flood of guards came running in.

and i go to guard like "Hey it's just flew into my pocket on it's own, here's the fine of this mysterious illegal action, no big deal" gives that item to guard along with fine,
Guard: puts back item at place* and said "Easy Money"

I've never accidentally stolen something at guild traders, but I have gotten bounties at quite a few writ turn in locations.

I've never accidentally stolen anything from traders or merchants but there are some towns where I accidentally steal items when turning in the items for my crafting writs and I'll always get spotted.

There's an addon that makes it to where you have to crouch to steal. When I'm flying around turning-in Writs or shopping I leave that enabled.

    If you're on console, NVM.

There's a few items that do get in the way, especially around the writ turn in sites. Also, at least one in Windhelm with an axe hanging next to their head. Come to think of it, there was a stall like that in Skyrim as well.

As in "you're ruining my immersion," I believe.

It was tongue-in-cheek, a la, I don't go to the grocery store to browse and suddenly find a box of cornflakes in my pocket and security breathing down my neck for stealing it.
